Hello! Today I'm sharing a look at Abeka's Writing with Phonics 2 (Cursive) and The Good and The Beautiful Handwriting level 3 for beginning cursive. The differences may be a lot bigger than you think! I'll also show and in depth flip through, which one worked better for my kids and some scenarios where each one might work best for you.

I use Abeka and TGTB. I just switched this year to that. I was only doing Abeka prior. Everytime I start to wonder or question what company I will use for a subject you do these comparison videos!! 🤗❤️ It is extremely helpful! Thank you so much, Lauren! Big Hugs! You are helping this mama so much!

I love that you broke down for who they would work for too! You're so smart. That is so helpful when you are overwhelmed by curriculum choices. And there are SO many handwriting options. Way to go mama! 👏👏❤️💕

You did a great job with the comparison. My son has been doing abeka kindergarten cursive while doing first grade manuscript by them. He loves the cursive.

Wow that’s a great idea! Does he do both wash day or switch off? How does he like it?

My current 1st grader did Abeka kindergarten Cursive and she loved it. She now writes almost everything in cursive and does creative writing in cursive without being overwhelmed. I'd say if the child is a beginner, start with their kindergarten level. At first, I was adamant to purchase a kindergarten writing for my 1st grader but glad I did! She would of have hated cursive if I skipped it. You'll be surprised at how much they'll learn and progress with just the beginner level. She's now ready to do the 2nd grade writing.

Thanks so much! We've been using TGTB handwriting. I think we'll continue using it after watching this video, but I love that Abeka introduces cursive sooner

Thank you for the flip through! I went back & forth between these 2 for my soon to be 1st grader. She learned cursive through logic of english this year and TGTB's "way" of cursive is pretty similar so I went with that! I really just wanted it as extra practice and so glad we chose TGTB Handwriting level 3!

It was really helpful seeing these two compared! I actually have tgtb handwriting 3 in my cart waiting to purchase for next year for my 2nd grader. We've used Abeka manuscript for her so far and it looks like tgtb will be the right fit for an introduction to cursive.

Thank you so much for this comparison. It was really helpful for us to decide which route to do. We are just starting with Abeka Phonics BUT we have nothing but reluctant writers so I think we are going to go TGATB route for now and see how it goes.

That makes sense! It feels much more low key and not as much pressure, if that makes sense.

My middle granddaughter started with ABeka K4 and used ABeka handwriting until halfway through 1st grade. She hated it. She loved TGTB and did so much better with it. I don’t like cursive so young. She didn’t learn manuscript well. She enjoyed TGTB so much more.

My biggest hang up with TGTB is the way they do capital Q! Okay, it’s my own personal pet peeve 🤪 but I can’t stand it (or any other handwriting curriculum that does the Q that way). My son likes the books though and has asked to go back to it next school year. He likes the activities 😊 Buuut, I had him do a couple of years in other curricula that introduces it the way I learned it. The “right” way 😂 That being said I will let him go back to it next year because I politely got over myself 😂😂😂

😂 I totally understand that! That’s how I feel about how they do little “q” and little “a” and a few others who have that extra line before you start the letter

@@JaniceCrowell same! It actually looks like a Q 😆 I love variety in handwriting. When my husband saw my ampersand while we were dating he was very charmed. You never know what someone is going to find endearing about your handwriting 🥰

Same, but don’t like the “m” in handwriting without tears, I know it’s correct but it rubs us all the wrong way and further confuses us with “m” and “n” for us.

We will have to teach cursive in a few years with our now 4 year old!!! I don’t expect to start cursive right now and we are doing pre writing with her!!! I don’t think I could start her with a lot of writing!!! TGTB looks more doable!!! Idk what will help her at the moment as she’s not yet doing writing!!!

I just bought my daughter the Abeka letters and sounds grade 1 - LITERALLY - last night at like..10pm, and after I did the flip through, I was wondering if I should get her started with cursive since they start it so young, or skip that and wait until she’s older. HOW WEIRD that you posted this video this morning?!!!

My daughter is a leftie, so teaching her handwriting has already been a huge learning curve for me lol!! I’m so intimidated to teach her cursive, but I’m almost leaning towards starting now so we can really practice throughout the next few years. I can’t decide.

We’re all lefties over here lol! No need for intimidation…you got this!!! Just start slow and take your time. If she’s not ready, there is always next year when she’s older and more mature.

I want to start cursive next fall for third grade and I can’t decide between abeka or memoria press 🤔 I think the problem is that I have two GOOD choices 😆

They’re slightly different.

We've also used both programs for six of our kids. Some of our children enjoy Abeka and some enjoy TGATB. The difference is the style is more "elegant" with Abeka in my opinion. Also the letter "lowercase o" is completely different, and I really love the slanted lettering, old fashioned style of Abeka best.

Yah it’s crazy! I find Abeka way way to much for the child! I’m trying the good and the beautiful cursive this year levil 3 !
