Great footage! I took the Silver Star from Philadelphia to Tampa and back in 2009. Doing it again in March this year. It's a great trip. I had a coach seat on the way down and upgraded to a roommette on the way home. This time I have a roommette for both trips. It's really the only way to go on a long distance trip. Amtrak uses to use a more direct route from Raleigh to Petersburg. But CSX abandoned the line, which is why the Star was rerouted over the NS H Line between Selma and Cary. The original route was only 134.5 miles from Petersburg-Raleigh. Now its 169. Its further but its only half hour difference now. (although the original SAL train went from NYP to Miami in less time then it takes the train today to go from NYP to Jax). Because the trains could go 100mph top speed on SAL tracks it only took 26hrs 25m to go from NYP to Miami. It takes 31 now. The Silver Star doesn't have a dining car anymore. (for now anyway).

@JTACIJ...the length of the stops will vary according to ea. station. I noticed a time range of 5-10 minutes- 30 minutes. The train attendants usually tell passangers in advance if you are able to take a smoking break or not, but if you are final destination is passed Union Station in DC, then you'll have the longest break of them all. The shop store fronts downtown are mostly facades. Most of downtown Rocky Mount was flooded in the 1999 flood from Hurricane Floyd. I looked into purchasing one of the shops listed for basically FREE! But upon inspecting it, the second floor was gone, the roof was gone and the interior was totally gutted down to just brick walls. The stores that ARE open there, smell awful. The water damage was very extensive and the city did very little to assist the owners in rehabbing afterward. Insurance companies managed to weasel out of most pay outs, even for homeowners, because the insurance policies didn't cover catastrophic flooding.... which is because they weren't in the flood zone.

@trainguy2020 Thanks! If I remember correctly, we departed Orlando at 7:45pm and arrived into Newark, NJ at 6:15pm the following day. Unfortunately, I do not remember what the road numbers were for our pair of P42's, I don't have them jotted down for some reason.

The cost of this route varies greatly from the time of the year, and how far in advance you booked the tickets. The best way to find out the cost is going to Amtrak's website.

This is my preferred mode of travel from South Carolina to Northern VA where my son lives. Get a roomette, stretch out or chat with neighbors in the car.

That's nice right there i want to ride the silver star i like the silver star.i had originally planned to go on an amtrak train on my birthday but i never did :(.From what car was this filmed on? sleeper or amfleet car?.theres a sleeper car on the train which at night you can sleep in.

Those trash cars are from New York, they take NYC Garbage down to Richmond Virginia.
