This is a vintage 3½ minute 8mm color film of a 1967 round trip aboard the Miami section of the streamliner Silver Meteor. It also includes a cameo appearance by the Sunland local. This was just before Seaboard merged with Atlantic Coast Line to become the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, and still four years before Amtrak. The Winter Haven station remains in service, but the old 1927 stub-end Seaboard Miami passenger terminal was demolished after Amtrak moved out in 1978, except for the original entrance portico standing at 2206 NW 7th Avenue.
Highlights:
[0:08] depart Miami S.A.L. station
[0:35] depart West Palm Beach station
[2:07] northbound Silver Meteor departs Winter Haven
[2:33] trackside at Winter Haven station
[2:47] southbound Sunland arrives
[2:55] southbound Silver Meteor arrives
[3:13] arrive Miami S.A.L. station.

I used to live and railfan in Sarasota at this time. We had the #2028 doodlebug and various rare engines to power the Silver Meteor from Tampa-Venice. I was a huge fan back then and this brings back a lot of memories. Thank you!

@binzoclone The best part of films like yours is the blend of the railroad and the lives it passes through. I really enjoy watching this film from time to time. Cheers to your Mom!

That car sitting on track 3 in Miami looks like an Osgood-Bradley "American Flyer" car, probably for the SUNLAND. Man, I wish my dad had brought along the family movie camera the many times we were at Miami Seaboard Station! Thanks for posting this great video.

This train used to zip through Denmark SC every evening. I know because I'd get my mom to take me to watch it. I called it the Silvia Meteor!!!!

I also rode my bike a few times in the late 60's all the way from North Miami to the old Miami Seaboard station just to watch the ACL and SAL passenger trains. I was also lucky my parents and grandparents drove me a few times so I eventually could claim seeing or riding all the named trains, even went aboard a few after the passengers detrained and before the yard switcher pulled them out of the station backwards to Hialeah. Wish I had video of all of it!

I rode the "Silver Star" from NY (Penn Station) to Boca Raton, in 1965. I'd give my left nut to do it again, same train, same everything. Great film, and thanks for posting it..

Looking at this clip again, on the sections before the train slows down and the truck passes it, this train was seriously chewing on some speed! Definitely over 80mph.

Great video!! My Grandfather worked for SCL in this time period. I got to ride in the engine one time at the age of 7 years old. I hadn't been on a train since then, until last year. I took a trip on Amtrack From Savannah to Fort Lauderdale, (It was the Silver Meteor). Thanks for sharing this.

I rode the City of Miami only once from Miami to Hollywood in the late 1960's during it's Seaboard days, but no video exists. Admitedly a very short 30 minute trip, but it was my first ride in a dome car!

According to the timetable, the 61 miles from West Palm Beach to Okeechobee was covered in 50 minutes, so average speed was 73.2 mph. I'm pretty sure at times it must have been doing 90 - 100 mph.

Up until the FEC strike in 1963, ACL trains entered Miami on the FEC, so they used the FEC station in downtown Miami. After that they were rerouted onto SAL so they used the Seaboard station in this video.

The old Seaboard "Miami" stn. was located at the NW corner of NW 22 St. & NW 7 Ave. in Miami - only the front of the bldg remains. It's ~ 7 mi. south of the current Amrtak stn. in Hialeah, though they call the Hialeah stn. "Miami".

The NB Silver Meteor also was carrying a Sun Lounge buffet sleeper, but unfortunately the camera wasn't running when it went by. Actually, I never saw the Silver Meteor without it's Sun Lounge.

Looks like the Silver Meteor had a west coast section from 1939 until 1968 that split from the Miami section at Wildwood, then split again at Tampa, continuing to St. Petersburg and Venice.

I'd love to see what this same route looks like now on the current Silver Meteor; I'm sure there aren't nearly as many orange groves, at least not between Miami and West Palm!

@cforssi - a tragic shame that the doodlebug was not preserved and was scrapped. Reportedly it had maintenance issues due to wear and tear. Still, I wonder why SCL couldn't have donated it to a museum and accept a tax break for it.

In Miami, did SAL and ACL use the same passenger station or were they separate?
@stuartlee6622
@stuartlee6622 11 ай бұрын
They were separate! The ACL station was right downtown Miami, much closer to Miami Beach. The Seaboard station was way out west somewhere near Hialeah. People going to the beach preferred the Champion!
