Thanks Shelley. I had read that adding a few drops of gum arabic to my fresh water would help to bring some shine to my painting. I must have been too generous with it for I found that I went back to my palette dsys later and found my paints had been spoiled. They were all gummy! My advice to others would be to add the gum arabic to the fresh water very sparingly.

I have a 12 granulating color palette by white nights and all the colors are near black in the pan ... on paper all this is very colorful, pretty and effectful if you use enough, more or less water :) I like these spezial effects colors and the colortheme very much ... that´s why I wanted to have all 22 of this brand and I have a lot of fun with them. there are also few one pigmented granulating colors , like perylene violett, brown, ultramarin, cobalt blue, marsblack/iron-oxide, cadmium red light and so on and they are also very interessting in my opinion to mix what you want... 😃

what did you use for label on palette? you can get paper with dots of paint to try before buying the tube by each manufacturer

Ah yes, the sample dot cards. I do have several of those as well. For labelling I simply used plain old masking tape and a sharpie.

All your videos (except fhis one) are great. Warm and cool colour description - you changed your mind and ended up making a mistake unfortunately. (I could talk and read distracting comments at the same time!) Blue heading towards greens then yellows are cooler. Heading towards red/purple are warmer.

When you wet the palette every time you paint does it water down the pigment the next time you do it?
@shelleypriorfineart
@shelleypriorfineart 2 жыл бұрын
No not at all. I add back all the water that has evaporated it gets absorbed in and softens the paint back to a creamy consistency (but not watery). It will evaporate again and again. I just replace it each time.

Do you always use a white matte?
@shelleypriorfineart
@shelleypriorfineart Жыл бұрын
I do use white mats but mainly because I show and sell my work. Nothing wrong with using coloured mats. It’s just a matter of choice.
@jeanielaramie6617
@jeanielaramie6617 Жыл бұрын
Watercolor societies require a white mat. Technically, this makes the strength of the painting stand on its own merit without relying on a colored mat to enhance the piece.

I have noticed that some colors have lost their granulating capability when they are remanufactured as a hue.
@shelleypriorfineart
@shelleypriorfineart Жыл бұрын
I suppose that's true. My Cerulean hue is less granulating the Cerulean, but for my purposes, I prefer that. Nice to have the options though.

As transparent as I can manage. It’s a sliding scale in terms of transparency but I have avoided any opaque colours.

Student grade paints have all the information. It could be they have a different filler and slightly less pigment, cheaper pigment or imitation, sometimes coloring (even more bright and transparent, but not lightfast). What you are talking about is a craft paints, not artist paints. Student grade Cotman, Van Gogh , White Nights even, Grumbatcher Academy is a nice one. I don't see much difference from Daniel Smith, they even have the same pigment numbers. Why not use for studies and safe some money. If you are selling your art, it's not a big deal to use professional paints.
Biggest mistake I see beginner watercolor artists make, and how to fix it
