This video demonstrates how to perform measurement of ABPI in an OSCE station. The ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI) is a non-invasive method of assessing peripheral arterial perfusion in the lower limbs. ABPI is a ratio composed of the blood pressure of the upper arm (brachial artery) and the blood pressure of the lower limb (dorsalis pedis and the posterior tibial artery).

This is a good practical video but it is a great pity that the person undertaking the Doppler ABPI did not explain, in more detail, as they were conducting the procedure, what they were doing, what arteries they were looking for, how to do the procedure in more detail. It could have been very very good.

Why not just feel for the pulse and use a stethoscope?

i couldn’t imagine using a stethoscope on the ankle of a foot. maybe the back of the knee but that isn’t going to give you the info you need. - you need a measurement so just feeling for the pulse won’t give you a ‘pressure reading’

@@blueeyes4233 It works when taking blood pressure on the arm. What's the difference?... I'm not a doctor (yet) so i'm just asking...

@@lee9650 the arms are close to the heart and the blood vessels there are bigger therefore the sound can easily be heard meanwhile when you're measuring the BP in the ankle you're measuring the blood flow to a small artery so you need a Doppler to intensify the sounds so you can hear it otherwise you wouldn't hear a thing.

you won't be able to hear the DPA or PTA with a stethoscope
