One Major error identified. the Trophy equipped Merkava Mk IV, automatically turns its turret to face the incoming ATGM upon detecting the threat in order to guarantee that in the event of intercept failure, the vehicle will be facing with the thickest part of its armor towards the missile, which is the front arc. it is not because the trophy cannot defend the vehicle 360°.
@BenyKarachun
@BenyKarachun Жыл бұрын
Not really either, the system detects where the missile is fired from, it turns the turret towards that location and fires, hopefully killing the crew and severing the communication between the missile and the launcher

Ahh. See this makes sense, as for a while now in places like Afghanistan, the U.S has been involved in wars where chemical rounds and rpg’s were mostly used, rarely encountering enemy armor capable of solid shot projectiles. On the other hand, Russia has seen more conflict in past years where enemy armor with solid projectile rounds is not so uncommon, Ukraine for example. And their tanks would face professional militaries, not just ‘easy to be flanked by’ guerrilla forces, thus the emphasis on protecting the front.

does seem strange though that Russia wouldnt develop it to cover top down kills considering NATO's love of top down munitions. considering how smart they are getting it really wouldnt suprise me if these munitions now predict the tasrgets position from the last lock. Meaning it still hits the tank.

Essentially, *Afghanit:* It is better optimized for open/tank-tank warfare against a conventional/peer adversary since it has robust soft-kill system and the hard-kill system can defeat much denser sabot rounds with incoming multiple fires. The fact that it is purposely built to the front of the turret with 180 deg. arc really emphasizes that it is designed to protect against tank rounds. *Trophy:* It is designed to defeat ATGMs and RPGs and better optimized for a guerrilla style warfare where any infantry can hide and flank the tank from any direction. The 360 deg. protection including high elevation means that even top-attack missiles like the JAVELIN can be intercepted. Not surprising given the kind of enemies the Israeli military is facing.

Remark about the merkava iv. The non trophy carrying variant survivability. As mainly was seen in 2006 war vs hizballah. There have been roughly 500 to 1000 anti tank launch attempts vs all the Israeli tanks.at least half at a very close range , urban scenario. Most were evaded or hit in a way they didn't disable the tanks. We are talking about tanks that kept on fighting after being hit by Kornetts several times guys. In my book, that is impressive as it can be given we can see what happens to most tanks getting hit by even a lesser AT rocket in an urban scenario where the shooter is slightly above your tank or behind it. You can all find the entire merkava hit loss ratio and see just how many rockets actually penetrated enough to damage the tanks. Most tanks were up and running in less than a day, and back in the fight. And out of the ones that got hit, mk iv variants barely suffered any . (Not to mention we count the first mk iv that did total loss,due to an idiot brigade commander sending a tank on its own to a paved enemy ,mined to the teeth road). As for crews. You can also find the stats. Most injured, suffered only minor hits and were back in the fight with their tanks. That is, and always was, the true strength of the merkava tanks. Modularity like a Lego cube so you can basically refit the entire tank as if it was a plane toy model. And crew survivability on top of everything. Cause metal can be replaced. Men, cannot. All of the , is Not even taking into account the abysmal way the entire ground forces were used in that conflict (what happens when the unthinkable happens and your chief of staff is someone that came from the air force fighter pilot ranks. Ie a complete lamen in understanding ground battle plans, strategies and terrain tactics for a 2d mountain forest dense terrain). In 2014, there was a much more dangerous tight urban scenario for the merkava's by comparison... think chechnia on steroids. Mines, rigged roads houses and tunnels , on top of AT crews all over the place. And yet. The only tank crews that died, were hit while they were outside of their tanks in the rear. As far as I know not a single tank was hit, and there have been at least 10 confirmed Kornetts interceptions that were recorded as being neutralized by the trophy system. As for combat effectiveness in an urban scenario. The mk iv were responsible for over 60% confirmed enemy kills, and were responsible to locate and destroy any rigged houses , which there were a lot of. A special light casing was used for the latter as even a small nudge so to speak would activate these rigged houses. Thus the mk saved a huge number of infantry soldiers as well. Why did I say all that? Because tech is good only on paper. In the end it's the field of battle that proves your machines effectiveness on top of every other stat or figure there is on the drawing boards.

Thank you dude for this great video! I have found that very often videos on similar topics as this video are usually (very heavily?) biased in either the American or failing that, Western direction. A video such as this, with a fair assessment, honest comparison and unbiased weighing of both the positives *and* negatives of all devices and/or systems under scrutiny is a very refreshing change of pace. I mean no offence to any of my fellow Americans here, but the number of military channels on KZfaq simply pumping out one after the other of the video equivalent of the "MURICA F* YEAH" song is too damn high in my opinion. Not to shit on the song though, that shit is straight fire, but these days one has to be very vigilant in distinguishing between that which basically boils down to military propaganda, and that which is true, valid and useful information. That being said, thanks for making this video bro! Many kudos for you!!! 🤓👍👍👍👍

Excellent video. however it was my understanding that Afghanit hard kill worked by launching a munition which would then detonate in proximity to the incoming threat, either destroying incoming explosive rounds or making the APFSDS tilt or break as result of the shockwave. Another aspect that cuold be taken into consideration is that Trophy works while the tank is on the move while in the Afghanit case the hard kill solution would be more affected because the launchers seemingly cant compensate the Armata´s oscillations while traversing rough terrain.

Systems have pros and cons, and there is really no way to decide which of the top tier systems is the best, as that is subjective and dependent on the customer(army). Eg. The trophy is installed on Merkava mark 4 tanks, Namer APCs and some US Abrams tanks, Iron fist is installed on the Israeli new Eitan APCs and some US M2 Bradley's, the two systems are not installed on the same vehicle at the same time if that's what you meant, Israel's chance of facing against AP rounds in the near future is very slim, in the other hand AT guided missiles and RPGs are a constant threat so it's more important for Israel to have better protection against these types of threats and AP is less important.
@jayburn00

@@E_y_a_l actually, there was talk at the time to combine the systems (for redundancy or more flexibility I guess). I haven't heard of anything coming from it it in a while though, so they seem to have cancelled the idea. It is true that both are really for countering HEAT warheads, but iron fist was believed to have some, albeit very limited, effect on KE threats as well. The same with the afganit active protection system (Russian aps that probably only exists on armata and probably just as much vaporware as the armata since the Russians can't make enough and haven't worked out the bugs to actually deploy into combat).

@@jayburn00 I know there were talks because it's written in the Hebrew wikipedia page of Iron Fist, but IMI were against it. I guess because the main supplier was suppose to be Rafael, what I meant is that today I don't know of a case where both systems are installed on the same vehicle, and since at least for Israel, the chances of a symmetrical tank to tank combat are very slim, there's no reason to spend too much money to protect against AP rounds, and even in the case of such battle, even the older Israeli tanks have a lot of other advantages over our counterparts before we even start talking about active protection systems, so no need to spend that money, Kornet and RPG-29s are the main threats for Israeli tanks these days and protecting against those is where the money is going to.

Israel has another system called "Iron Fist" which is working similar to the afganit as a hard kill, but has also an automatic angle change towards the threat path. The Trophy seems to be better for urban combats, short range and Air attacks. Afganit/Iron Fist should be theoretically more usable for head to head field combat with kineic shels. Why not to use the Trophy + Iron Fist and turn your tank into a peaceful man cave space? It's good that both nations are at the same side.

Trophy is better because it's actually been used in combat and isn't just Russian propaganda. The fact the Trophy can spin around to precisely pin point incoming targets but Afghanit cannot tells me all I need to know; and even though it can move Trophy still needs to fire a spread of projectiles to ensure the target is neutralised, this is difficult stuff all to do in seconds. I seriously doubt a stationary tube firing just one solid mass has the finesse to intercept anything that isn't coming directly at it. Let alone an APFSDS traveling at over 1700 m/s. When I first saw T14 I honestly just though those tubes on the side are just smoke launchers. Maybe they do work, I'm happy to be proven wrong but until then I'd take a working system like Trophy anyday.
@legogenius1667

Yea, I'd rather have a shotgun- style launcher that can aim anywhere than a fixed tube firing one projectile. Then again, there are no people in the T-14's turret, so they can probably whip it around pretty quickly.

@Nikola Poiukov I searched for like 30 minutes but didn't find it anywhere, and as I said, I won't believe it till I saw a slow-mo video of that Because at least for me, for now, it's unbelievable that "some countermeasure" can catch a round that small travelling at the speed of 1800 m/s and completely eliminate all the energy it got

@@gian.4388 The Russians don't post videos (at least not something that can be meaningful) of tests often even if those are successful (e.g. the S-500 test reported by an American news company) so don't count on seeing a test. If the subject is to intercept Sabot rounds in general rather than just by Afghanit, it is a different story. Intercepting APFSDS rounds has been done before and there are videos online. (mostly of iron fist) Even trophy has been shown in a video tilting an APFSDS round enough to degrade it's penetration capability to a significant level. The iron fist video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMeddNaGzKzLXas.html 3:04 The AOA of the APFSDS would result in close to a negligible penetration capability.

@Nikola Poiukov Actually using the same round as reference, the round going 1800 m/s has double the energy of the one going 1300 m/s, so yes, it does make a big difference And no, it doesn't change its trajectory, like the system Military Enthusiast linked in his comment, it just changes the angle of the projectile And I mentioned the speed of the projectile because I couldn't believe a system could react that fast and be so precise it could directly hit the round, and indeed it doesn't hit it, still really fast tho

From a capabilities standpoint, fixed launchers have the advantage that if a threat is within their will zone they don't need to rotate and so have extremely fast reaction times. Being fixed should also improve reliability since there are less moving part and, probably more considerations than those came into play at choosing fixed launchers. These advantage off course came at various costs.

Why would you think the russian system is superior? It was never actually tested in conflict, so theres no indication about its real world effectiveness. And this is the kind of weapon system that really needs to be tested in field conditions. At this point its also quite healthy to be skeptical about russian military claims. Theres stories about a small number of T14s tested in Syria for the first time, and one being lost and some damaged by ATGMs, but no clue how legit that is.

@danielgcos4882
@danielgcos4882 5 жыл бұрын
Once the projectile has been intercepted it's destroyed, even if not destroyed its trajectory would be heavily altered thus making a second penetrator impossible to fire effectively. They could make a smart projectile that once it detects it's being engaged it shoots the smaller penetrator before being intercepted, however, it would probably be cheaper to just use more RPG/whatever projectile and saturate the system than developing and using an advanced round.
