When the one said, "When I was eleven I got pregnant. . ." I stopped and replayed it, sure I had misheard. Yes but, there are alot more psychological issues behind each person and unfortunately we don’t have the mental health support needed or health insurance provided to provide care for kids as they grow up in this society. Look at other Countries that do, such as “Norway”, etc… This isn’t saying they shouldn’t be punished for their crimes they committed. They absolutely should! We should also provide in Prison and they should be required to attend, intensive therapy and Parental training and, provided by excellent Psychologists and Child Development Specialists. Plus, AA, meetings, drug tests, everything and it costs money, yet the alternative of going back to Prison costs alot more to pay for someone to be in Prison everyday. Invest in prevention of reoffending and you will save money of the cost of housing of a prisoner and foster care!

@@ceegee5724yeah I think that’s probably part of the reason why: cost. I mean that’s a a lot of cribs and beds and diapers and pull ups and wipes and bottles and everything and on top of that think of this way: when one of the babies moves up to the next diaper size that’s more diapers that they have to buy now or ask for donations of. And when a new baby and mom comes then that’s even worse. Cause now you are trying to get all sorts of sizes now. I also think the reason why this program might have gotten shutdown was for safety reasons as well.

"These woman are punished why should they have children in prison?" Exactly. They already have been punished by going to jail and serving their time. Reading some of these comments is distressing. We don't know what these women have gone through. It is likely their parents were immature when they were born, therefore didn't learn coping mechanisms, birth control, etc. These women are human beings who deserve a life. Most seem to be drug addicted, which is a disease and should be treated, not punished. We could all use a lecture in empathy. Help these young women to help their children.

These women are in prison for a reason. Their babies shouldn't be behind bars with them. It's not fair for the children and their mothers should live with the consequences of their actions. The babies deserve a better life, I feel so bad for them. And maybe these women need their child taken away so they finally regret and change for the better. To reward them won't do the trick. I really don’t get why these legit criminals keep trying to get our sympathy. They’re certainly not getting it from me. Yes, it’s sad that a baby was taken away from their mother 24 hours after birth, but they really should’ve put that and pretty much everything else into consideration before they committed the crime. They act like this was something done _to_ them, rather than something they did _to themselves._ They committed crimes, knowing why they do was wrong and knowing the consequences. You don’t get a pass for that just because you’re a pregnant woman.

I don't know if I believe that was her only instance of "violence". Most states you cannot technically be charged with a crime at age 10 or younger. Even if Indiana is a state where you can be charged at age 10 and even if the parents of the other kid wanted to charge her with battery it's unlikely a judge would even hear that case or a DA would take it unless there was serious bodily injury. I feel like something else probably happened...could still be coming from her juvenile record but I feel like she's leaving something out.

There's nothing more heartbreaking as a mother than giving birth and leaving hospital empty handed with no baby. Without even being given a chance to prove if you are a fit and capable parent and just being judged on your past mistakes. Mistakes made whilst young and stupid, mistakes that never hurt anybody either. Thank God my mum stepped up (30 years too late but better late than never)

Babies/children should not know what the inside of a prison is like; should not be where their first, or any, experiences take place, as well as memories made. Not fair to choose that ‘wrong lifestyle’ for them and normalize it.

Women should be given the opportunity to give birth, keep their baby safe and close to them and be able to breastfeed their baby. Taking babies away after birth or sending them away is the cruelest thing ever. If the mother is mentally capable, this isn’t questionable.
@JessicaRodriguez-zy5gz

And people don’t seem to realize it is also cruel to the baby because the baby gets attached to their moms from the womb. If they come out the first thing they want to see is your mom well they can’t fully see but you know what I mean because he says their moms and all that stuff and they want to be comforted by their moms and sometimes when they take the babies away that you take away in the mothers never get a hold baby Because babies know who their moms are from the moment they’re born

Sorry but prison is supposed to be a punishment! Personally I think it all about the mother not the child! What good is it going to do most these babies to be with these mum's. What about when they are out with these babies and they relapse or commit more crimes. The babies would be better off going to homes where they will be looked after properly. I know there are probably a few that look after them well but what about the children who end up neglected or hurt! I just think the babies need to come first.
