I saw your previous reaction to The Righteous Brothers. I'm white and I don't think your comments were racist. They were honest. I grew up during the Motown period and black artists had a distinctive sound that we called Soul. The Righteous Brothers actually got their name from fellow performers who were black who told them "You're righteous, brothers!" A real compliment back then. I think people can be too touchy about this. It's important to be careful not to offend, but I think we need to be a little more tolerant of each other's differences, including figures of speech and expression. Especially when they are clearly innocent and not meant to be offensive.

I have never heard that! Medley is playing the piano on it. He later said, "If I had known the song was going to be such a hit, I would have brought in a better piano player." Hatfield, after is last studio take, said, "I can do it better." Medley told him, "No, you can't." He must have been thinking about putting these final high notes onto the record (which they are not--that ending is a surprise here that radio listeners had not heard--WOW).

The people of the mid to late fifties an early sixties when Motown was just picking up steam and the best radio stations were out of Chicago and they played music by people of color. So you will hear elements of Soul in a lot of White music from that period. Even Elvis Presley’s early music had elements of some Black artists like James Brown. To ignore that is to miss a huge element of the music of that period. So if you are not watching the Righteous Brothers they sound like Black artists. It was a big deal to parents in the south because the young people were gravitating toward Black music. It should never be racist to notice the soul influence of that time. It was new to a lot of people and they were experimenting with the sound. The very early rock and roll music also had elements from Black artists.

I am a white lady who is 77 years old. I clearly recall the first time that the Righteous Brothers were being played on radio. Back then, new artists were played at first on radio. Then when their popularity soared, they were seen on television and concerts and record album sleeves. When we first heard them, all of us, of every color or nationality or cultural background assumed they were black gentlemen. Theis was not racist. We simply had never heard white gentlemen produce that beautiful sound. Then when we finally saw them, everyone was astounded. Please keep doing your excellent reactions and ignore those who want to see it racist in either direction. Those who assume that, should actually study the rich history of music. Well done.

They would take turns doing solos every once in awhile. They flipped a coin on which one of them would get to sing this and Bobby won. Bill played the piano for it. Bill joked and said if he knew this was going to become so popular he would have hired a better piano player to do it justice.

They had a coin toss, bobby won that toss. Bobby was a tenor/counter tenor. This was a live performance Andy Williams show 1965. No autotune, no gimmicks, one take. What a beautiful blessed man, with such a voice. We are going back 50 + years on this live performance. Bobby made this song his own. I don't believe anyone could match his range/octave (s). Happy that u enjoyed this presentation.

They played his version in the movie Ghost in the 80s. This was covered by several people but no one has matched him. His range was unbelievable and he did it so effortlessly and without straining. This was a B side on a 45 record and the other one, Bill Medley, let him do it solo. They were both great. There is an intro to this performance on the Andy Williams show that talks about it.

“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Greatest Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 88 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" was the most played song on the radio in the 20th Century. "Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965. Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree. Bobby's use of "Runs" in his singing style has inspired countless others in their own music. Nobody has ever done it better. 5 notes to say the word "I".....Early in their career at a small venue after the show a black man said to them.... You two brothers are righteous.... the source of their name. In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......

Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained (1955),[1] hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack.[2] It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers in 1965.[3] According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.[4]

The original song, "Unchained Melody" was written and composed in 1955 by Hy Zaret and Alex North for a prison movie called "Unchained". And the person who originally sang it and sang it in this movie was the first African American Opera Singer named Mr. Todd Duncan. This song, "Unchained Melody" has had about 1400 recordings of it and have had about 670 artist singing it in multiple languages. It was the most popular song in all of America and throughout the UK in the Twentieth Century. It has or rather parts of "Unchained Melody" was also played in several other movies especially in the 1990 movie called 'Ghost" with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. They were looking to the best singer to sing this song and it was Mr. Bobby Hatfield' version of the Righteous Brothers that they choosed. The version that you just heard was in 1965 on The Andy Williams Show. If you are wondering like many why Mr. Bobby Hatfield sang it and not the other Righteous Brother, Mr. Bill Hadley was because they only wanted one of the Righteous Brothers to sing it and on a toss of the coin, Mr. Bill Hadley loss. But anyway, I like many others enjoyed this very beautiful romantic love song as well as others. It's a shame that they don't write or sing these types of songs anymore unless of course they are from the past. If you get the chance, try listening to a Mr. Bobby Caldwell singing "What you won't do for love". Enjoy Amigo. Enjoy.

I grew up never seeing color. When I was 9 years old, in '59, MoTown came into existence. I became hooked on "Smokey Robinson", "The Miracles", "Jackie Wilson", The Temptations, "The Four Tops" and the list goes on. In 1963, at 13, I was playing a big bad B3 Hammond organ for a show band. My musical life for 30 years was dance music of the soul/funk genre. My 10-piece horn band in the late 1970s / early '80s was all funk and dance music featuring our lead singer who did Donna Summer like Donna. We were a mixed bag of African American/White/Hispanic. I was the whitest of all the guys... lol One day my guitarist looked at me and said, "Too bad you weren't born black. You could make it out in Detroit." I looked at him and said, "Yeah... the tragedy of my life." In music, there is no racism. At least there never was for me. And I always felt like a bruh with my players. It's unusual to find guys like Hatfield and Medley doing great music with a lot of soul and sounding really black. It was always a compliment to me when I heard things like that from my brothers because it affirmed my love for soul and funk.
