The dreaded SERENO! I’m 64 and I was 5 years old when people were sitting outside in Argentina, at that time of year when the night s start to get the chill they call EL SERENO 😅 and I was afraid to leave the covered area of the porch after the comments they made . To this day I fear the SERENO! Oh Jenny what a blessing you are! Can’t wait to hear Abuelitas version!

The covered area of the porch is worse for El Sereno, vocês bobos Argentinos supersticiosus vocês, caralho. If you really want to catch a flu, sit under the patio or anywhere outside or not heated inside with hair not covered and you'll catch more el Sereno.

My Kentucky country grandmother always warned us not to go out with our hair wet, because that meant "all our pores were open" and we could catch our death of cold. El Sereno makes a lot more sense to me.

I love the Abuela character 😅😂 she kills me. My grandmother & great-grandmother always warned us about sereno when we were living in the campo in the Dominican Republic. Apparently it's a thing 🤷‍♀️

Heah, here in Brazil grannies also talk about sereno. Diff pronunciation, but pretty much the same, an evil conscious cold that weakens the lung. Oh, and there's always a thrice-removed cousin that died because the sereno caught him hard.

Yes! Even in Brazil we have that. My grandma would always say, "cuidado com o sereno no peito," and she would tap her chest twice every time.

I'm from Costa Rica and my grandmas talked about El Sereno. I didn't believed them, then I became old and got a cold because of it. It's a true phenomenon! I can testify.

Same here, the thing is where my grandma lived it's a warm place that gets cold in the evening hence the need to cover at least the head and the neck.

Historically in the United States and Canada, there was a whole thing about "night air" in general being bad for you. The same author who wrote the _Anne of Green Gables_ series wrote another called _Emily of New Moon_ , and her grandmother or great-aunt or whatever is positively obsessed with the notion that Emily's _got_ to quit letting in the night air by opening the window.

I remember as a kid, my cousins and I would have to stop playing late at night in the outside porch or lawn because of "EL SERENO" ~~~ It was either my great grandma, my grandma, or one of my tias that would bring us inside because the dreaded Sereno was coming .and could get us sick~Now anytime I go visit the family in Mexico I join along with my Tias and older cousins to grab the youngens and warn them of the curse of "EL SERENO"~ Right of passage I'd say 😌

Meryl Streep wishes she was as talented as our Jenni! Meryl could never take these characters , these childhood stories and make them universal, having them cross over culture , racial, country , generational lines ,while respecting all of them, self made, the writer and producer, director... hah Streep was made by Hollywood, a puppet... people like jenni and cast and crew were nurtured and graced with talent that comes from within!

As a Brazilian I can definitely relate to it: the grandma saying to their grandkids to avoid going out at night in order to not be exposed to the sereno and catch a cold. I've commented before that the Cuban/Cuban-American family dynamics you show in your videos are very familiar to me as someone born and raised in Brazil, just switch Spanish to Portuguese and other things here and there, and it would be hard to distinguish a stereotypical Cuban from a Brazilian family.

Our last full video was released 3 weeks ago. “Where have you been?” Busy producing this video… and a bunch of other things, like short videos for IG/TikTok, scripts for future videos, ads for brands, live stage performances, trying to sell shows for TV, etc. Even just one new video a month is a lot, when you consider how hard it is to make them, and everything else going on in life at the same time.

I'm from the US and have lived in the Dominican Republic for the past five years. The Dominican I live with always talks like Abuela. Eeeverything "te hace daño"... Especially if I'm starting to feel like I'm getting a bit sick and I go outside for a minute while its barely raining outside (and 90 degrees), he gets upset... but wait, he also says that "el sol te hace daño" too - and no, he's not talking about sunburn. It could be 8am sun and he's still trying to make me just stay inside, covered in Vicks (he swears you need to put it on your entire face like a moisturizer, and push a little bit INSIDE your nostrils and cover your feet with a crap load and put socks on over it and sleep like that overnight. Oh, and you have to drink at least one Ensure ("en soo ree") o Gatorade ("gay toré") por día mientras estés enfermo...

I remember hearing about el sereno from my abuelita when I was a kid and not ever really quite fully grasping the meaning but nevertheless I always had that hoodie, plus it was always cold where I live so it worked out I suppose 😂

It's funny because in Spain "the Sereno" was a man who walked during the night with the keys of the houses, incase someone lost o forgot the keys. And cry "The Sereno" was the that he knew where have to go tomhelp. Anyway It was a true job made for real people 😅.

Yo, I'm here to report that the sereno is real, my friends. It exists in tropical environments around the world (think Philippines, Guam) but, oddly, not if it's a tropical desert (Israel, Sudan). Facts!

They think Latinos have long names, but at least our’s are broken up into first, middle, last, maiden, etc. And don’t have all those extra letters in there for no reason 😂
