This one takes me back, not only to this performance in Mountain View CA, but to its origins in rehearsals for Yes’ Fragile album of 1971. I’ve always seen this track as a kind of breakthrough blueprint for how the band might go about these long-form compositions, something we’d been aiming for without really knowing it. When we heard it, we recognised it. We’d hinted at it in bits of the Yes album, and even Time and a Word, but this baby was born complete and perfectly formed. Nothing needed to be added or removed.
The arrival of Rick (Wakeman) in the band marked the first appearances of the Mellotron and Moog synthesizer, adding size and colour to the band’s sound. Rick was surprised to see how often we argued amongst ourselves, and at one point shortly after his arrival thought we were going to split. Passions can run high in this type of all-in-a-room-together collaborative creativity, not something the average session guy was used to in 1971. Anyway, this was the blueprint we built on for the subsequent Close to the Edge album.
Jon Anderson was on great form at this concert - powerful, clear voice without having to strain at it. Ever since the beginning of the band he had been on at me to write something for it, or at least to contribute to the song under collaborative construction. For him there were two kinds of musician: the ones that were told what to play and ‘merely’ played it, and the ones that created what was to be played and then played it - the latter, in his view, being definitely superior to the former. I shouldn’t put words in his mouth, but that was the drift of it. I had been chipping in solid ideas for a while, and was duly rewarded with a writing credit on this. I was so naïve when I started out as a musician, I knew nothing about song-writing royalties until someone pointed out that, anecdotally, Mick Jagger went to the gig in a Rolls Royce and Charlie Watts went by bus: the difference being, of course, who wrote the song!
Credit due here to Julian Colbeck, additional keyboards; Milton McDonald, second guitar; and bassist Jeff Berlin, standing in for a temporarily indisposed Tony Levin. All three were criminally under-lit and generally ignored by the video’s director, and all were vital components in thickening the sound, especially on some of the newer material. Thanks guys!

I have always loved Squire's basslines. I found his articulation to be idiosyncratic but consistent. Berlin isn't a perfect fit playing fingerstyle but he is also not a douche. Released on VHS some time after the live pay-per-view event broadcast, either late 1989 or 1990. I taped the ppv b'cast liv in 1989, then bought the audio cds (initially as a UK import only, with one less track than the later US release which added Starship Trooper, which was also found on a 4 track promo cd in advance of the US 2 cd release), and I bought the VHS when it was released. I'm not sure what year it became available on dvd, it was in the 2000s, with a limited number of copies, and expensive, iirc...I don't have one.

Shoreline used to take volunteers to help direct traffic to the venue, and to prevent people from parking in the parking lots of the businesses nearby. The deal was that you could do that for an hour or two before the show, and once the show started you could get in for free. That's how I saw a few good shows there, but this one caught me by surprise. I had no idea that I would be moved so much, it was great! edit: I left out the part where a van pulled into the lot where I was working and as I walked up to tell them to park elsewhere, the window rolled down and the driver offered me a mushroom to let them park there. Fair deal, I thought! Parking there after hours wouldn't hurt anyone and how much could one little mushroom affect me? Let's just say that I was surprised to see video from the concert on YT and the set design hadn't been designed by Roger Dean as I had made it out to be from my vantage point on the lawn...

The 9th day of the 9th month of the 9th year of the 9th decade of the 20th century was a great day in PPV TV history. Jeff Berlin took this gig (and a few ensuing dates filling in for Tony Levin) on mere days' notice!

I write songs and am an improvisational lead guitarist. Yes shaped my musical mentality. Thanks for being there as a dutch uncle. I've lost track of how many times I saw you live. First time was Winterland Arena in San Francisco. You played on the bill with Wild Turkey and Black Sabbath. I was 14. Love you all much.

Well, Bill, that's one way to get a subscriber. I was at this show! That's Jeff Berlin pinch-hitting on the bass because, as I recall, Chris Squire got hold of a bad batch of sushi or something. Gesturally speaking, you are the most restrained drummer in rock. Sonically speaking, you're anything but.

This was one of the best "big rock shows" I've ever seen, and definitely the most enjoyable. I saw ABWH in the summer of '89 in Middletown, NY with my musician friends from high school, the guys with whom I played in bands and/or always talked music, jammed with on weekday afternoons, competed with & against to learn new songs, etc, and we were all prog and fusion fanatics. This was 5 years after we graduated, so it served as an unofficial 5 year HS reunion too. Jeff Berlin was awesome, adding his unique style to Chris Squire's bass lines. And the band really seemed like they were enjoying being on stage together (the Union tour a couple of years later, not so much...). Over 30 years later, my friends & I still talk about how much fun we had at this gig. One of those magical nights where all the stars align!

That damn Simmons snare sound is so cold. I want to go through the screen and smash that thing! Bruford's acoustic snare playing is so iconic and tasty with dynamics. Unique sound, etc. When you hear it it isn't a "snare drum," but instead part of his voice. Like Miles' trumpet sound and playing. You know what I mean? At least he switches back and forth between the Simmons and the real drum, but when he hits the Simmons it's like getting your ear smashed with a baseball bat. However, maybe that was the point.... I love ya, Bill!!! Thanks for your playing and for the many gifts you've given the music world over the years!

Far better decision than continuing as a nostalgia act, like his former bandmates from KC.

@@thomasrudy6132 No, ABWH was a new group, and they recorded a new album before going on tour.

@@thomasrudy6132 True but a bit harsh? Musicians need an income and after all people wanted to see this group play together. You are aware they recorded one studio album and had the second squashed into the Union project where the tracks contributed by Squire and Alan white are rather obviously completely different than AWBH compositions. Typically Bill walked away from the commercial side several times in his long career. While many miss his contributions you should respect his decision past and present. Steve Howe should really do the same....soon!

@@thomasrudy6132 he he perhaps I miss read your post. I thought you were referring to Bill taking part in AWBH as a nostalgia act when he declared otherwise? If youve read his biography (I have) you'll know that that fits his personality. We all have faults chief. This late in his life Steve could equally be suggested to be doing the same with far fewer people interested...chill out fella.
