One of my favorite Yes songs. There are so many! I was blessed to see ABWH in September 1989 in Sacramento CA.

It's entirely true that this song got better and better over the years, to the point where when the band played it live, you could look around and see people crying and in a state of rapture. Yes at their best moments really had this monumental spiritual atmosphere to their music, and this song is an excellent example of that. I've seen audiences react at Yes concerts in a way that I've never seen at any other rock concert. That's really something.

Jon's voice really soars on this song and the entire show.

It is the best concert of ABWH! Since 1973 Yes is still one of my 3 favorite bands.

1972, I was familiar with Yes only to the extent of hearing Roundabout on FM radio. 16 years old when my older brother, all of 17, was planning a trip to the twin cities in September to see Yes. He encouraged me to go with him and 5 other guys. We made the 5 hour trip, even getting stopped by state highway patrol after hitting what appeared to be a large TV still in the box. I believe the show was in the Armory in downtown St Paul, not a large place, but typical of many auditoriums at the time. Open seating, tickets were $5. We chose to sit in the first row of balcony seats, a bit down from the stage so we could see the members. Gentle Giant opened the show. At the time, we all had a little familiarity with their sound, but for me, I only knew I had heard them on FM radio. The following band was the Eagles, touring to support “Take It Easy”, “Witchy Woman” and other hits from their first commercially successful album. Like probably everyone in attendance, we were imbibing “herbal cigarettes” as Craig Ferguson referred to them, and one of the guys had some wine. The lights dimmed, then the opening sounds of birds and I guess just nature in general started filling the auditorium. I leaned over the balcony ledge, intently watching and listening as Yes opened with Siberian Khatru. It couldn’t have been longer than the first line of the song when I found myself standing at the edge of the stage, even leaning on it. The volume was beyond loud, but it was perfect. Yes was touring to promote “Close To The Edge”, released just 10 days before this concert. I had been playing drums on a kit for only 6 years, but had started to become bored until I was exposed to Yes live. Though Alan White was playing that night, I had no clue who any of the members were. The next day, my brother and I spent the entire day listening to The Yes Album, Fragile and Close To The Edge. I believed I had watched Bill Bruford playing the night before, not realizing it wasn’t until Yessongs was released in spring, 1973. That didn’t alter my newfound obsession to master the drums like Bill Bruford. Now, at age 66, I can say I’ve been able to replicate the patterns during my practice sessions, and when younger, the speed, albeit, using incorrect patterns as there was no internet to dig into to discover exactly what the patterns were. Everyone of us, to this day say it was a life altering concert. That sounds trite, maybe immature, but it changed mine and my older brother’s. He died on September 14, 2016. I was the first to speak at his funeral, and though we were/are both born again Christians, I had the opening of “And You And I” played, fading out just before the vocals. Now, anytime I hear Steve Howe’s opening of the song, I’m filled with both joy and sadness over the loss of my brother. He was my greatest supporter in my drumming, and there was never any question about his talents as a guitarist. He taught both classical and jazz, but could play anything. That 12 string intro is haunting, ethereal, and just is a great spice to the song.

Bill Bruford the Master of syncopation. What a wonderful rendition of complex music with Live Studio Quality by a cadre of the most talented rock musicians of this age. A Blessing.

I was sad that Tony Levin was out sick for this show, but Jeff Berlin played very well and the Drum and Bass parts of Heart of the Sunrise were wonderful. Now I'll watch that video too.

I was on vacation that week so I followed the band up the California coastline--San Diego, LA, and then Mountain View. I loved those concerts and that tour! Some of my absolute best memories listening to Yes music.

I really enjoyed everything about ABWH, wish it had continued for longer. Amazing, I was 19 at the time. Where did the years go??!!!

An absolute classic and my personal favourite and one of the first songs I heard from Yes. The 12 string intro was enough to turn me into a fan. Those halcyon days from the 70's are with me again. ❤

An absolute classic. And so lovely to hear Bill talk up both 70s and 80s YES material at the same time. As an occasional drummer for our local church I also enjoy the triangle! And this was one of my Dad's fave YES songs. I think it was the upward whooping on the slide guitar that did it for him. That and the glorious moog bits that bookend Rick Wakemans contribution.

One of the most sublime rock compositions ever recorded and performed live. I had the privilege to see the Close to The Edge era live and I have yet to hear a better rock opus.

So many years ago, this was the one that hooked me to YES forever. This version I think is one of the best. Thanks guys!

Lovely rendition, captures the grandeur and mystery inherent in the original. Had the good fortune to see this tour at the Santa Barbara Bowl when Jeff Berlin stepped in at a moment's notice.

I remember playing this song for my girlfriend of five years from early High School, to a few years out. I was not versed in the art of telling a girl I loved her, and was hoping this song would convey to her, some hint of my deep love for her. Well, apparently, it went right over her head. By the October of 1973 she dropped me like a sack of potatoes! No advanced warning. Saw her once when her Mom passed away in the late 70's, and no contact of any substance for the last 50 years. Breaking up wasn't the problem, it was not being friends after a six year, of what I thought, was an honest relationship/friendship. In the immortal words of Bel, Biv Devoe, "Never trust a big butt and a smile"! Tru dat! LOL! (But just a great song and lp!)

Great memories of seeing them live a few times in the past prog rock times.

And from every other musical adventure that you journeyed into with King Crimson, live Genesis, UK, and your brilliant solo albums with the incredible Bruford band, I had the privilege of seeing you many times with the 80's and 90's Crimson, Earthworks and the Yes Union tour, where I was honoured that I was able to meet Rick, Tony & Alan, (although, I would have preferred meeting yourself, Steve, Chris and Jon) I own all of the Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, UK, Bruford, ANWH, & Earthworks music which you appear on, which massively affected my musicality and who I am today as a human being. I would be remiss if I did not mention some of your drumming on other albums which were a massive influence on my life and musical development, such as: Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water, Al DiMeola - Scenario, Rick Wakeman - Six Wives Of Henry the VIII, David Torn - Cloud About Mercury & Door X, Bruford / Levin - Upper Extremities, Tony Levin - World Diary, Gordian Knot - Emergent. I have seen you in clinics in the 1980's in Canada and have felt so fortunate to have grown up with all of the incredible music that you have been a part of throughout your & my lifetimes. Thank you, THANK you, THANK YOU !!!

I saw this tour when you came to the Spectrum in Philadelphia, August 1989. One of the best concerts I've been to and the ABWH album itself remains one of my all time favorite albums. "The Order of the Universe" is in my Top 5 favorite songs!

I love Bill’s drumming style he makes it look so effortless even though he’s playing some really complex rhythms … it’s a sign of a true virtuoso … I wish Bill had done more records with Yes, he was my favourite Yes drummer just because he bought some jazz influenced elements to the music which I thought complimented the music so well …. Also when you look at that line up on stage it’s just an incredible amount of talent …. Surely one of the greats.

I was lucky enough to see the very next night after this concert small venue Sacramento Ca. Amazing band.

People have been using this Bruford video to praise Yes -- preach it! But I've got to say that the video of KIng Crimson's 1982 concert at Frejus -- specifcally The Sheltering Sky, is amazing in the true sense of the word. Among other things it is proof positive that Bill is the genius everyone says he is.

This is a wonderful live version of this masterpiece. I saw ABWH in Stockholm back in -89. Their show had an huge impact on me both as a musician and also on an personal aspect as it helped me through a hard time in life. Thanks for the upload. 🙏🏻🤩

Yes indeed… such deeply beautiful and moving music I too sat here, and although I know every note every syllable, it brought me to tears. Roundabout and You and I are certainly my favorite's. It is also a pitty that Bill Brufford left the band in the beginning of Yes life because he is the Drumer who knows the reason of each beat in a song or piece.

I mean..... wow.... All of you - best musicians all there together... what a treat to read about your views on the this song and your experience. Rhythmic changes in a song, for me, give it a level of sophistication and use of music as a language. There was alot of this used in the 70s and some in the 80s... not much anymore. My brother and I were just talking about "where is the music like this" in these times now? Well, thank you for all of this great music and performances...

Great version. They are absolutely into it and it soars and gels so beautifully. One of the loveliest love songs ever written.

Even tough I am a bass player that took up bass because of Chris Squire, this is my favorite Yes song anyhow.

I witnessed And You and I at the Greek in LA in 89. I couldn't actually fathom at the time that I lived in the very presence of this song, Close to the Edge and Heart of the Sunrise all played by Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman @ Howe, the actual creators. The only downside was no Chris. On the other hand, the thing about the closeup shots in the video is this: despite all those diamonds on Jon's costume he isn't exactly a rhinestone cowboy:) But the treble clef reminds me of Elvis, Tennessee and the whole country thing which, when juxtaposed with YES has an unusual and interesting contrast about it.

Thanks Bill for posting all this. I was drumming at the time Yes album came out and my favorite at that time was Carl Palmer. Then I saw Yes In Atlanta GA when you guys were opening for ELP. Super concert by two super groups, and it gave me a new favorite drummer. Thanks for all the years of great music.

To me, the REAL Yes. Bruford's touch lightens the tone of the entire band. Jeff Berlin had three days, I think, to learn the setlist, and jumped right in due to Tony Levin's illness. It's a pity the spotlights were reserved only for ABWH.

In the early 80s Id put on my older brothers records. This was and is one of my favorites.

Prog Rock was definitely the pinnacle of R&R in my book and that song was also a pinnacle song played by one of the pinnacle bands. But why were they not called “Yes”?
