it's also easy to be attached to Phil because that's how we know AC/DC. He's what I call a "dumb" drummer, much like Tommy Ramone or Marky Ramone of the Ramones, and a polar opposite of Neil Peart or Stewart Copeland. Chris Slade i think is too good a drummer for AC/DC, but he's still great. No knock on him. but AC/DC sound is dumb and loud....the way it is meant to be.

Personally, with Phil Rudd, Malcolm Young, and Cliff Williams, I consider AC/DC as the best rhythm section in Rock history. And the groove that Phil Rudd provides is the heartbeat of every song AC/DC puts out there. Malcolm Young did an interview where he said Phil has always had that "special something" that he provides to the group that no other drummer could provide, and the others were just fill-ins until Rudd came back.

Chris plays on top of the time and rushes the time ... he's stiff and robotic and plays the hihat all wrong for ACDC he accents the ands.. also plays little flourishes that don't belong and puts kick drum notes in the obvious places rather than letting the music breath like phil does.. I saw him 3 times on razors edge tour and they were great shows but the band lacked that swing they had when phil came back.. the band sounded day tighter and way more grooving on the next 3 tours with phil.. when chris came back in 2016 he just wasn't the same drummer and the tempos were weak and lots of mistakes and missed changes, there were whole songs where Angus and chris were playing different tempos, not something I'd ever seen at an ACDC show in 25 years of seeing them live.. they sounded like shit honestly and thats why no live dvd will be released

Exactly! You'll never see Rudd do drum solos, or try to have a song focus on his drum fills, etc. Not flashy at all, just perfect timing with a phenomenal groove and sound that very few drummers can provide. Angus Young gets most of the front stage credit, and rightfully so, but the heart and sound of AC/DC is all about Phil Rudd. He'll always be THE drummer for AC/DC. End of story.

Slade sounded good on the Live release, albeit different to Rudd, obviously. On the Rock or Bust tour. He had a real struggle on anything mid-tempo upwards, his hi-hat caused an almost shuffle-like effect which was absolutely comical on tracks like Rosie. It would have been interesting to hear if they got around that had they released the Wrigley Field video they recorded. Chris still sounded solid on the slower songs though, and on transitions.

Phil plays behind the beat and never rushes, plus he has a swing to his playing that Chris Slade doesn't have. That swing is what makes a rock AND ROLL band. If you think the razors edge sounds like programmed drums then you don't know what programmed drums sound like. Programmed drums sound like shit. I will agree that Phil is best for acdc and I will agree that Chris wasnt quite into the zone for their last tour. You have to remember though that they also didn't Have Malcolm and that weakened the rhythm section Big time. Stevie is good but nowhere near Mal's precision timing. And Chris is much older now too. Back in the day though chris was a straight up beast when he filled in for the razors edge. Listen to the live album from that tour. If you aren't rocking to that it's because you are trying not too lmao.

@@tylerherr8913 Bruce Fairborns production on razors does sound pretty compressed and the drums sound very linndrum synclavier ish, my point was it doesn't sound organic and I'm well aware of Chris slades body of work, he was solid as rock on the razors edge shows I saw and acdc tended to play very fast during the 80s tours and razors was no exception. The band sounded way better on the ballbreaker tour though, Phil's pocket brought that super tight swing and swagger back that they didn't have with Simon Wright or Slade. The Munich concert on stiff upper lip is acdc firing on all cylinders soo tight and locked it ridiculous. I would agree a lot was missing on rock or bust tour but what really stood out was botched tempos and a lot of badly executed drum parts,

Phil was the right drummer for ACDC because he likes playing just one thing, really well. That's what the band does. Chris Slade worked with Tom Jones and Manfred Mann, playing some complex music. He can play various styles so he can never have that almost-religious commitment to a brainless backbeat like Phil. I used to see ACDC playing locally in the 70s. They were almost exactly the same back then - playing one style, but as tight as a fish's arse. Personally, I thought Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Jo Jo Zepp and the Falcons and Kevin Borich Express were much better live acts than Accadacca but they didn't crack the overseas pop market.

Nothing against Phil but Slade brings the power & the guts. Just my opinion. I taught myself to play drums & to this day (even though I'm mostly on guitar), i can still kick @$$ on skins. Playing Phil"s stuff IS fun , but playing Slade's stuff is more fun. Again, just my thoughts on the matter.

Phil has more of a groove that really worked on the earlier blues driven songs. but Slade on the razors edge was the adrenilin shot the band needed at the time. Phil always hangs back on stage in the same way as malcom did. and lets angus and brian do their thing. but on that tour Slades power brought a new dimension to the band. somthing they never got back again when he left

Slade is robotic his 4/4 sounds like what a teenager learning to play would do, play on top of the groove and hammer the high hat very staccato with no dynamics or swing ... his playing on the last tour was pretty horrible, his tempos were all over the place and some songs were really effed up almost like he couldn't hear how off he was

Totally disagree with this, they have a much better sound with Chris Slade, and he has a much better drum sound too. Listen to them playing Thunderstruck with Rudd (leaving aside Brians struggles these days to hit the high notes, there is absolutely no energy to the track, compared to when Chris played it

Yes. The problem is people rate technical skill over feel. Don't get me wrong, technical skill is something to be admired however if their style doesn't fit the music then it's wasted.
