$689 to replace a capacitor???? Holly Crap! I paid $135 about 15 to 18 years ago to have my capacitor replaced. I've replaced my own since.

I live in the south it’s hot so I bought 20lbs of 410a about 4 years ago for $180 and taught myself a lot from just KZfaq videos and honestly isn’t way easier than automotive even easier than vintage automotive to fix and I’ve been keeping my and my friends and family going since then.

I have to defend my industry here. First, saying "it is just a capacitor" sounds like limited knowledge to me. There are a lot of experience and measures involved in a typical service call, and that is why it is charged high in diagnostic. You are probably happy because you just replaced a capacitor but wait in a couple of days when they start calling you back for the same 25 year old r22 unit, not cool believe me. Guess where you get the money to return for a call back . However, i know there are bad ac techs as there are bad auto mechanics, but things are really expensive right now. Refrigerant is expensive, and sometimes a new system is the best option. So dont expect replacing just the capacitor to be below $250, brother. Have a good day.

I know more than you think I do. And I know how to test a capacitor and see that it is bad. Out of all the things I do, AC is the easiest to troubleshoot. And you aren't going to see if it needs freon till it is running. You could test the equalized pressures, to see if it is really low, but you won't really know tit is is running and you see the Head and Suction pressures. He didn't replace the cap and charged $200. I expect crappy service from most AC techs. My Blower motor was failing once. I called places to get them to come swap it out. I was working out of town and I 3 different AC techs out who said they couldn't find any issue. Yes because you have to wait for an hour or two for it to shut down. $100's of dollars later my wife had to live without AC till I came home and replaced the blower motor.

Jaja. Easy. 18 years in hvac and I can't find it easy yet. No wonder 3 techs had to go to find the problem ,it is not for everyone.😅...I probably sound the same as you to my electrician, mechanic etc..😶
