Just one day after Dustin Diamond’s passing from Stage IV cancer, Access Hollywood’s Mario Lopez is reflecting on his longtime friendship with his “Saved by the Bell” co-star and what a special person he was. Mario opens up about why he always stayed in touch with Dustin, on some of the final moments they shared together, including meeting his girlfriend. He also shared how they were discussing either a potential reality project together and even looking at the possibility of having Dustin make an appearance on the reboot of “Saved By The Bell” on Peacock. He also reflects about meeting Dustin for the first time on their iconic TV series.

@Mazes S A I agree but I think he is better than the other 3. My brother has the same illness as Lark and his high school friends never abandoned him. They are selfish assholes in my opinion. They could have given Dustin a chance to at least apologize, make amends before he died but they couldn't even do that. Seems Mario actually did keep in touch with him over the years according to Dustin's other interviews. He's scum bag light as far as I'm concerned.

@@itsharryhagen I think it would be nice. They grew up with them and it would be nice to be cordial with them every once in a while. They were always invited back to events/ the new show and chose not to be a part of it. At least for their fans it would be nice for them to pay homage to what made them famous. They act too good for the show now. Lark didn't do anything to the rest of the cast and was left out of reunions. At the end of the day the show wouldn't have worked without each of them playing their part.

@@itsharryhagen I'm not saying they needed to be there for him throughout all his struggles, especially the book. He did seem sorry for what he did to them tho and it would have been nice if they were open to his apology, not that they had to be by any means. As for professionally, they were all producers on the new show, they had the power to bring both back (as their job for the fans) they chose not to. They were a team and although they didn't have to bring them back it looks shitty that they didn't want to, at least in regards to Lark.

Watch that Access Hollywood interview from 5 years ago. He treats him like he's never even met him before. Phony stuff. Easy to say now "we had potential projects coming up" when in fact they bumped him from every reunion.

Yes. I think Mario knew that because Dustin was the youngest of the SBTB cast, he didn't always know how to act with the rest of the cast who were older than he was.

Lol no. They only recently got in contact after he interviewed him few years ago. But before then they never talked. Dustin even said it in his book that he never kept in contact with the rest of the cast. Dustin even trashed talked about them but later apologized about it. The cast has tried to reach out to him in past but he never responded. Mario was the only one that got through to him because he had to interview him about the book.

@@chronocross85 It's because the book was a work of fiction that was written by somebody else. At least that's what Dustin said. I think Mark-Paul felt the most betrayed by what was written about him and that Dustin said that there were these drug-fueled parties on the set and stuff like that and he said none of what Dustin said about him was true. In fact, the last time Dustin ever Spoke to Mark-Paul was when the show ended when he was 16 and the others were 18.

@@CelesteKTheNewWaveRevue Not everything in that book was fiction. He said a ghostwriter exaggerated some things out of context. Even many details in that book were validated by Peter Engel, Dennis, Mario, and others. Mark was not telling the truth and wants to have a clean image. Dustin was bullied on set. Tiffani did cheat on Eddie Garcia. Mark was revered on set while Dustin was ostracized. There was a rape allegation. There was some drug use. Mark and Mario did date Lark, Tiffani, and Elizabeth. Those were not lies.

@@BigReggii Dustin apologized to the cast over the book even tough there was a lot of truth in it. The cast NEVER took accountability for how they mistreated him on set and many made disrespectful comments prior to his book. He has passed and people are still operating on the smear narrative. Mario wrote his own book. Mark also exposed some secrets like co-stars hooking up. Dustin was held to a double standard and two of his cast maters bullied him harshly on set. He was always treated like the outsider and being mocked for his appearance.

@@anthonycampos8057 So Dustin has no right to tell the truth or discuss any experiences? All of the cast aired dirty laundry and discussed aspects of the show. Peter Engel and Mario wrote their own books. 80% of that book was the truth. Dustin got vilified by the press and certain cast members. He downplayed it by admitting a ghostwriter exaggerated things and apologized to end the bad blood. He had every right to discuss what he went through. He was bullied and even Mario said he was the one of the few who were friendly on set with Dustin. Dennis, Peter, and a number of old writers, producers made comments in the past. Hardcore fans remember the old footage/comments even if that is no longer available on the web, Lark & Dustin suffered a lot on set for not being part of the group. If Tiffani did the same thing, the media would be praising her and taking it as gospel.

@@musicalwheels grew up on SBTB. Followed Mario Lopez career and watched interviews. Mario Lopez seemed genuine in his care and concern over Dustin. The guy saying he only stayed in contact for money should be the one explaining himself. Mario and Dustin were actually in the works of getting Dustin to appear in the second season of the new SBTB series as well as a separate project Mario would have overseen. I believe Mario that he cared for Dustin and all the trolls who talk trash likely are only going by headline reads and gossip.

Mario and Dustin have both said that they have kept in contact with each other over the years. But I totally agree with you with the rest of the cast. In an interview a few years ago Dustin said he hadn’t talked to Mark Paul since the show rapped.

There is also an interview from a Con where MPG admitted that he pushed Dustin away when they were young as he found him too young and a bit annoying and although she would not admit it herself both Mario and Mark Paul did say that Elisabeth also had no time for him. I am pretty sure Dustin felt like an outcast in the later season of the show. It would have been nice for them to make peace before he died.

Especially with a person that published a fake tell all book about your "high school" days? This is a classic damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. If they never said anything about Dustin people will be mad at them. If they did say something about him people will say they are using him to gain publicity so what do you want them to do? They also don't need to be in the limelight, they already taped the SBTB reunion season 1. Tiffany was telling the truth when she referred to Dustin as a co-star. If she referred to him as her friend people will be up in arms saying they weren't really friends.

Recently, most of the cast of "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" had a reunion special, where they talked about great times on the show and funny moments. They've even taken the time to talk about the deceased James Avery, brought both "Aunt Vivs" together, and Will Smith & Janet Hubert mended the bridge that was burnt between the two. It seemed like a genuine & heartfelt reunion, almost like they just picked up where they left off 25 years ago! lol. That's a feeling that the SBTB cast will never truly recapture, because Dustin Diamond has passed away and apart from Mario Lopez, the rest of the cast didn't reach out to him for any reunions or gettogethers. Mario Lopez talking about how close he & Dustin Diamond was and being a friend long after SBTB ended, is an example of what true friendship is.

just going to say something, the show was legit in the 1990's and people drift, some people make bad decisions and some don't, but at the end of the day these people are only bringing to light the personal times they had while working together on set from the past. while giving respect to say the right things, as if at a funeral. be respectful in the comments. just because people had feuds "even families have feuds" at the end of the day they showed their respects.

Mario was the only one who kept in contact with Dustin. Dustin said Mark-Paul hasn’t spoken to him since the show ended. Ik Dustin did crappy things in his life, but it’s still sad to see him go. Rest In Peace, Dustin Neil Diamond, 1977-2021.🙏

Thank you Mario for being a genuine cast member, surrogate big brother and friend for Dustin. He was the youngest in the group and clearly needed help in his adulthood so way to represent. The others get no respect as it doesn’t cost much to send a text or email or something to encourage folks when they’re down and hurting.

Dustin got a little lost for a while but he found his way. I loved and prayed for him. I'm glad Mario kept in touch with him. I do wish we could have seen those projects come to fruition. R.I.P. Dustin.

Dustin had issues, but they had a past together, kind of wish the saved by the bell cast would include him in their reunions, Dustin was the one who needed most financially and personally.

Everytime I hear someone say there were plans to do something before someone has died. I never believe them it feels like a PR stunt to me. Like hell reports a couple months ago said kobe wanted to drop Nike and create his own shoe brand. Even after he died they said he wanted to become a producer. Like which is it? I know it's kobe and he probably would've done it but I mean come on that dude was focused on his book series at the time.
