According to Jon: Lenovo P52 Thermals Undervolting CPU

Some quick thermal results of the Lenovo P52 with and without an undervolted CPU.
Spoiler: Undervolting helps greatly to increase performance, but doesn't do much for temperatures. I would recommend uninstalling
the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework (not the Microsoft like I keep saying in the video :p) because that helps with performance as well!

Thanks for making these clear & thorough videos! I ordered a P52 and your videos have relieved a lot of the anxiety I had, specifically about thermals. It gets hotter than I hoped, and I'll probably do the thermal paste replacement, which will be much less intimidating thanks to your other video on that.

My Lenovo Thinkpad P52 with a undervolt of -0.140V runs on 4.3Ghz all cores full 100% CPU load with thermals between 83-91C. Thanks alot for this video! Helped me get my unit to not thermal throttle. Before I undervolted it got 3,8Ghz all cores and a toasty 97-100C! Specs on my P52 is i9-8950HK, 16GB, 1TB NVME and 4K Multitouch with a Quadro P3200 6GB. Runs flawless with Adobe Premier Pro, Photoshop and a full Cubase Pro session with no recorded drops on latencymon (Got to turn on airplane mode to get no dropouts while recording). Was actually considering returning the unit but after this I will definately keep it! Thank you so much for this video b1n0ry! Love your video style and reviews. Subbed!

Hello Jon, the wifi and disk indicator (under screen) on my P52 is not light up although i've already turn on the wifi mode. I'm very sad about it. Can you help me to check it out this problem? Kindly Regard

I don't know what Aida64 settings do you use, and what bios/drivers version do you have, but mine P52 only with -0.140V can handle 3.9 Ghz on all cores in Aida64. I don't have any further modifications.

Just did repaste as per your video, full 1g of Kryonaut. -0.165mv getting 43w-45w and 80 degrees at 100% CPU util at 3.5-3.6GHz. What would I need to do to get 4.0?

Hi, great video. Did you ever come up with a better solution to lower the thermals without repasting? Would a dedicated cooling pad help? Planning to use this as a DAW. Thanks

dedicated cooling pad helps, and I also removed the dust filters (requires full disassembly), from all the intake vents on the bottom of the laptop.

I have opened my P50 twice during the last 18 months that i have had it. It is a bit complicated to reach the cpu cooler, but take a few hours, do it nice and patient, you will be good. I think there might be room for serious improvement in cpu temps with your machine because something simply seems wrong. At first i tought it's running so hot because the P3200 is dumping way more heat into the cooling solution then the m2000m in my P50. But then i saw that you have idle temps of about 60-65C. That's just crazy. There is probably a thermal contact problem betweeen the cooler and the cpu. If you do this paste replacement please record something about this because the thermals and GPU power are the main major difference between the p52 and the P1. If the p52 can't offer seriously better thermals then the P1 at much quieter levels. Then it kind of starts rendering itself a bit obsolete unless you really don't care about weight. I love my p50 but it is on the heavey side an that is a downside. I would however be willing to replace it with a p1 only if thermals could be acceptable.

The vlog had me switch to precision 7530. that is crazy idle temps 60-65c. I have the MSI gs65 stealth thin n my idle temp is 48-50. I never got past 91C on stress test. I am going to pass on the lenovo p52 lol

Wanna upgrade my ThinkPad P52 RAM to 64Gb. The i7 8850H CPU supports 2666Mhz [from intel’s specs sheet] and, from AiDA64, so does the motherboard but I haven't found a successful report yet, anywhere. Have you got the chance to try a 2666Mhz RAM [Performance kit preferred]?
@b1n0ry3
@b1n0ry3 5 жыл бұрын
The stock ram is 2666Mhz, but it only runs at 2400Mhz. Not sure why though, maybe a chipset limitation?

This is old now...lol...3 years is forever to technology! Still...quite applicable. I have a P53 with an i7-9850H in it. I think I'll repaste it like you do later and mess with some tuning.

Hi Jon, can i ask you which bios version is your P52? Do your bios enable Intel Virtualization (VT-d , VT-x)? Thank for reading my question. Cause i soon get P52, and i need these option to running Hyper-V or VMWare. Can you check out this.
