ACF 50 How long does it last on your motorbike? Your questions answered
After creating a How-To series on The best way to wash your motorbike which included this video The Best way to apply ACF 50 to your bike • The Best Way to Apply ...
I received a lot of great feedback but also a few questions including How long does ACF 50 last on your bike, especially during the winter months?

Happy new year Phil. Another cracking film by you, I can tell you're a decent safe rider and enjoyed watching the wide smooth lines you took and moved the bike's position for best visibility and line, I thought your bike looked clean enough after you washed it but obviously you weren't happy with it, lovely looking bike, one more thing, I know you had it on the side stand to create an angle for the water to drain but after that initial cool down period when you changed I would have put the bike on the Abba stand for more stability. Look forward to the next one.

I’m a clean bike fanatic and refuse to go out on it when it’s dirty so your vids are fantastic for me as TBF cleaning my bike is a huge part of the hobby for me . My question is I’d love to see how you clean your chain thoroughly from start to finish , degreasing , cleaning ,reapplying lubricant , and what products you use after a ride like that ?? Good video Phil, I have just brought a motorcycle drier but in the past have just used my air compressor. Getting the bike dry is really important. I've used ACF50 in the past but have recently switched over to a Scottoil product called F365. It is a water soluble product which also has a slight alkali action which means it neutralises any acidic action which is what causes the rust in the first place. A fresh application is required frequently. I've still had bolt heads corrode even with ACF50 applied thickly to those parts! Hope 2022 is a great year for you Sandy

Hi Sandy. Thanks for watching and for your comments. Getting the bike dry is probably the most important thing isn’t it?! A few people have mentioned F365 to me, I’ll make sure I check it out! Another Great video Phil.. As I ride my Tiger pretty much all year round I tend to rinse it off, but give it good clean at the weekend. However I'm now thinking if I'm out so much and washing it so frequently I'm probably washing away the Acf. Think I maybeneed to acf more often now..! Or wash it less meticulously this time of year...definitely recommend a drier, got mine on FB from an ex biker..keep up the videos..

Thanks, Paul. It sounds to me like you are going about it the right way, or should I say, my way! 🤣 If you are giving your bike a thorough clean every now and then and drying it, then it wouldn’t hurt to reapply acf50 in the most vulnerable places for extra protection. The test is to keep a close eye in your bike throughout the winter! Happy riding! 😁👊

For car and bike drying I use a Nilfisk shop vac, on blow setting. It is very powerful, easily good enough for the job and much cheaper than a bike dryer. Just keep a clean suction hose, don't want to blow muck all over.

Hi John. It’s difficult for me to say without seeing it but I’m wondering why the paint is lifting? I’d be tempted to tell your dealer especially as it’s only 2 years old. Great video. acf 50 is that sticky like wd-40? I gave my scooter a run over with wd-40 and I just cleaned with muc off snow foam and the wd-40 is still there, but all salt and dirt is gone. I did order acf 50 though Btw I just use a compressor to blow all water of, it’s easier and faster and then a towel in the end Ps. Beautiful bike👌🏻

Thanks! I’m pleased you liked it. The way you described washing the salt and dirt off after using WD-40 is exactly how ACF-50 works, but ACF clings for longer and helps remove corrosion. Why can't you spray acf50 on the brakes? Or can u get away with just not spraying the brake pads? U can spray it on paint? And do u recommend that?
@TheAdventuresofPhilJones
@TheAdventuresofPhilJones Жыл бұрын
Your brake pads need to grip the discs in order to stop the bike, applying acf50 on the discs will create a residue and the brakes will not grip, then your bike won’t want to stop. Not everyone applies acf50 to paint but I like to as I believe it helps protect the paint. I hope this helps. 👍

So the ACF-50 doesn't hold up all that well when you have to wash the bike. I thought it would be a more durable coating than that. I feel it would be best suited for those who store their machines or as in your case winter rides. You'll have to recoat it more often though. I like the idea that ACF-50 provides protection to the motorcycle hardware, ie nuts and bolt heads and all those bits that can discolour over time from corrosion. You don't really need to apply it to painted surfaces as there are automotive sealants that are far more superior and durable for this purpose.
@TheAdventuresofPhilJones
@TheAdventuresofPhilJones Жыл бұрын
Oh really. I’ve found it to work well. Remember that it adheres to the surface for up to 12 months according to acf50, of course this depends how much you thoroughly wash it but I’ve had great results on all the bikes I’ve applied it to. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience 👍

Personally, I think acf50 is over hyped. Plenty of better performing products out there. I still use it but only as I had a big bottle of the stuff. Yes, if you ride year round you do have to apply it every wash, I don’t care who says what about that as I’ve been using it a long time and the protection just isn’t there unless regularly reapplied. I found lanoguard to be vastly superior, if pricy. There are plenty of other products for less money that work very well too. Good to see a confident but sensible ride where restraint was exercised as well as optimising sight lines and maintaining reasonable smooth progress. Signs of a competent rider👍

@@malmoran8643 If not painted and on bare alloy, I'd use an old toothbrush and some autosol metal cleaning paste. Messy but does the job. Gloves essential! Once done and scotchbrighted up shiny, a good coat of ACF50. and repeat the acf after each wash of the bike. Using a pet dryer after washing helps limit or prevent corrosion after washing. If the bike hasn't been done in a long time, I'd start with some de-greaser, a rinse, then go to work on the corroded parts before a final coating of ACF or similar. Lanoguard is longer lasting and best applied on engine casings under the bike, swinging arm and frame etc.
