esophageal disease characterized by an inability of the esophagus to move food toward the stomach resulting from the lower esophogeal sphincter not fully relaxing during swallowing
Achalasia is a rare disorder of the esophagus that is marked by an impaired ability to push food and liquid into the stomach.
• The esophagus is a tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach.
• Achalasia is a disorder involving the smooth muscle layer of the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter.
• The lower esophageal sphincter is a muscular ring located at the low end of the esophagus, where it meets the stomach.
• The lower esophageal sphincter opens up to allow food to pass through into the stomach. It also closes off to prevent acid and stomach contents from traveling backward from the stomach.
• In achalasia, the lower esophageal sphincter doesn’t fully relax and fails to open up during swallowing, making it difficult to push food down into the stomach.
• In addition to the abnormalities of the lower esophageal sphincter, the smooth muscle of the esophagus does not contract normally and cannot support peristaltic waves
• This process causes food to get caught at the base of the esophagus.
• The condition affects about 1 in 100,000 per year and occurs on both male and female.

I have class 3. I’ve been affected since I was 12. The pressure test was terrible. I’ll take a colonoscopy or endoscopy all day over that test. Barium was easy and watching the pill get stuck right at the junction felt amazing. I finally got to see what the heck is wrong with me. My experience with Achalasia is food gets stuck and me having to vomit it out. If I don’t throw up the spit or water I try to drink just fills my esophagus till it goes into my lungs. Going out to eat always starts with, where is the bathroom, because I’ll have less than a minute to get there. Had a Mallory-Weiss tear. 3 days in the hospital with transfusions) Today my experience is, I’m starving, take 1 bite of food and the second it makes it to my stomach I’m nauseated. Giant burps and discomfort. I’m in line for Poem before the end of the year. I’m really happy that I might get to eat normally. Thank you all for your experiences, it sucks to be part of this ‘elite’ few, but it’s less lonely now

I had the manometry test done last year and then had the POEM procedure. It helped tremendously. I lost so much weight due to achalasia I finally have put the weight back on and I am able to eat and drink again almost regularly. Only thing is thick sandwiches and over cooked dry meats. Those still can cause me to grab the water and start sending it down to help push it down to stomach. There is no cure for achalasia. But the surgery helped tremendously.

Hello Achalasia Sufferers, I just wanted to provide a real and honest healing experience. I suffered from Type 2 Achalasia since January 2022. I was at the time 223lbs, and now I am 159 lbs. I just wanted to say not to get all into the Internet stuff about how there is no cure for Achalasia. Yes, it is certainly a rare condition, but you need to see a good GI who knows about the condition and can treat it. I ended up in the emergency room twice this year (2023) and got three tests (barium swallow, CAT Scan, manometry) and a day later the doctor told me I had Type 2 Achalasia. On May 9, 2023 I had to get the POEM Procedure. Now, I am home recovering-eating food and drinking liquids again. Never lose heart and remember to pray! Feel free to contact me or reply with any questions.

@@KJ-xc6qs Hello KJ. I am feeling wonderful. I had the POEM Procedure done at 2PM on Tuesday and I am back home eating and drinking. I had a sore throat for about one day after the procedure but the sore throat is gone now. The only "side effect" that I have now is I feel that there is a lot of "excess air" in my GI system, but its not too bad. Also, my GI said that the esophagus had a little inflammation but that would go away in a few days. I am not in any pain at all and moving forward with getting back to a normal diet..... All the best!

@@aftabdullayeva9498 Salam. Mən sizin rəyinizi tərcümə etməli oldum.
