Acne and Hyperpigmentation treatment can be tricky especially for those with skin of color because many ingredients don't play well together. Here are my recommendations for tackling both and getting rid of acne scars on black skin.
Acne treatment when also dealing with hyperpigmentation:
The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%

Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster (1 fl. oz.)

Avène Retrinal 0.1 Intensive Cream (1.01 fl. oz.)

Urban Skin Rx® Retinol Resurfacing Treatment Pads (2 piece)

Allies of Skin Mandelic Pigmentation Corrector Night Serum (1 fl. oz.)
Naturium Vitamin C Super Serum Plus

The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA
shop-links.co/172659168912565...
PSA SKIN LIGHT UP: VITAMIN C & E FLASH BRIGHTENING MASK

The INKEY List Tranexamic Acid Hyperpigmentation Treatment

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 (1.7 oz.)

EltaMD UV Daily Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 (1.7 oz.)

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SUNSCREEN!
My favorites are by Elta MD (tinted mineral/physical sunscreens)

Dr Alexis, thank you for telling the world about Cyspera it’s completely addressed my paradoxical post inflammatory hyperpigmentation from using too many products at once. Salacylic acid has been a game changer and I’m now introducing Azelaic acid to even tone - Dermatica now has 20% OTC (it came out after this video). My other products contain Niacinamide. Thank you and love from 🇬🇧. You are every chocolate woman’s dermatologist! 🙏🏾

Dr. Stephen’s, I found your channel in such a hard time in my life and you’ve been such a blessing! I never had issues with my skin, but now in my early 20s, I’ve gotten a lot of stress/hormonal acne. I have oily/combination skin and my main question to you is how to treat a friction/rug burn/trauma being a woman of color I know scarring is more prominent. It’s just very discolored! What do you suggest since this isn’t an acne scar?

This was so helpful and informative! I've been using Paulas Choice BHA which is nice for my sensitive skin but I worry because I only have mild acne and my biggest concern is the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and preventing acne but I don't want to use anything too strong. I've been using the product for a month now and it hasn't yielded great results outside of the diminishment of my acne. Can you please make a video on how these acids can be combined and which ones are better to use in the daytime versus nighttime? I was also wondering if you recommend retinol for younger patients such as 18-22? Thank you!

I have mild acne and occasionally I get papules, pustules and sebaceous hyperplasia. I frequently have blackheads and whiteheads. I purchased most of the items you mentioned because my husband & I both struggle with acne. He has sensitive skin. I purchased Loreal salicylic acid cleanser with 3.5% glycolic acid, the resurfacing peel pads, the ordinary azelaic acid 10%, the ordinary squalane serum with 0.5% salicylic acid, the ordinary niacinamide 10% + zinc 1%, the ordinary alpha arbutin 2% and revolution skincare salicylic acid 2% serum. I'm just wondering how often to use each product? In what order should the products be layered as a morning & night routine?

Thank you so much Dr. Alexis, always learning a lot! but If I already gradually incorporated tretinoin (acnetion) 0.05% is that too harsh or I should consider switching to retinaldehyde or retinoid?

I got the burts bees dark spot corrector you shared in your other video and argon oil as a moisturizer (went the natural route lol) if I do still get small acne breakouts, is the argon oil still a good option for a moisturizer? Also! Thank you so much for your videos 🙌🏾

Thoughts on the new Vanicream daily facial moisturizer? Lots of ceramides but is squalane an issue for acne prone skin? Also should we be avoiding shea butter if we are acne prone?

This is so helpful! Now if I use vitamin C during the day, how do I layer retinol and azelaic acid at night? Thank you so much for explaining!

Thank you for delivering your knowledge. What about tretinoin at .025% as a cream? I am a Black woman and was prescribed this for dark spots. Its been a slow process. I also using Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide for this consistent break out that I have been experiencing. It seems to have slowed down. I have been using thus for 3 weeks and the other for 2.
