Athens Greece is a historic city, known as the birthplace of western civilization. The Acropolis of Athens Greece dominates the skyline and is the most well-known landmark of the city. The Acropolis is 490 feet above sea level and has a surface area of 7.4 acres. The main visible monuments of the Acropolis were built during the fifth century B.C. Those buildings include the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Propylaea.
The Parthenon is often regarded as one of the finest examples of Greek architecture. The Parthenon served as a temple to the Goddess Athena for 1,000 years. The Parthenon has also served as a treasury, a Christian Church, a Mosque, and a gunpowder magazine for the Ottoman Empire. In 1975 an organized effort to preserve and restore the buildings of the Acropolis began and that work continues today.
The Temple of Olympian Zeus took over six hundred years to construct. This colossal structure once held two immense statues, one of Zeus and one of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Of the 104 original columns, only fifteen still stand today. The 16th column lies on the ground where it fell during a severe windstorm in 1852.
Me and my daughter joined a small tour group and traveled throughout the country for 7 days. We had a wonderful time visiting this beautiful country.
