EDGE of the OUTBACK

Жыл бұрын

This shooting trip we are out hunting invasive feral pigs, foxes and wild deer. There's plenty of action packed footage in this video with my GoPro on a head mount in daylight. As usual there's no shortage of close range kill shots with the thermal scope too once it got dark !!!
Critters on the deck and not killing native animals and damaging agriculture is the aim of the game. These uncontrolled animals are an environmental and agricultural menace in Australia and are mostly classed as invasive pest species. Shooting feral pigs is purely pest control, no animals are shot for consumption. Bacterial and diseases like brucellosis are prevalent in these areas.
I am a vertebrate pest control - contract shooter in NSW. For those wondering about the suppressor I hold the necessary permit in NSW to do so. If seeking information regarding that, please check the FAR webpage for details. All shooting is performed on privately owned farms, with exclusive permission granted in writing for paid services.
Call to action - If you would like to see the continuation of KZfaq channels like mine or others. PLEASE consider joining Patreon for further support.

Mostly I'm shooting my 308 Winchester - Ruger American Predator 18" rifle in the video. This rig is fitted into a MDT Gen 2 LSS chassis, running reloaded ammunition with 150 grain Hornady SST projectiles. Suppressor fitted is made by Shawmac Industries. My thermal scope is the new Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XP50 Pro. For a scanner I'm running a Pulsar Merger LRF XP50.
There is a sprinkling of 6mmBR and 6.5PRC action too where those rifles were more functional.

An abstruse, technical, lexiconic point being now raised here! Outside of the Antipodes, the collective term for a group of pigs is called a “Sounder!” Likewise, the narrator might wish to be informed that a collective name for a group of sheep is a “flock,” & the comparative term for groups of either canines or lupines is a “pack!” Interestingly, there are three (3) commonly accepted & authenticated names for groups of foxes, which are an “Earth,” a “Leash,” or even a “Skulk!” Additionally, he might wish to be politely advised that the proper collective term for groups of cattle, buffalos or deer is a “herd” too! A “colony” of rabbits is the most commonly used label for a group of these animals! However, I am most pleased to apprise the narrator that his use of the term a “mob” of kangaroos or wallabies is actually the correct one to describe groups either of these particular Australian marsupials!! Good Hunting! Let the “Hog Roasts Just Keep Rolling Out!!” Seriously though, keep up the Great Environmental Protection Work that you & your other colleagues are doing “Down-under!” In controlling & eliminating, destructive, invasive, species there! - ‘Edge of the Outback.’

American here. In Texas, we are allowed to hunt feral pigs over a baited patch, soured maize with a fish head usually brings them in a group (we call it a sounder), I prioritize the lactating sows because they are the vector of reproduction, and the meat is more tender than a boar's. That also leaves some orphaned shoats (piglets) to roam, here they're often picked off by our coyotes, Puma cats, and the occasional feral dog. In Australia, I suppose your dingos would do the trick. When the sounder is over the baited patch, occasionally if you are at close range you can line up one pig behind the other and get a "twofer", two pigs with one shot, I have done this with a waxed shaft crossbow bolt, I have tried it with a rifle but so far unsuccessfully. Next time I'm out in the field, I'll try it with a full metal jacket heavy round nose. Happy hunting. 🙂

What cartridge do you use. The 308Win will punch through multiple pigs if you are close with 150gr SST's
@jacqueslefave4296
@jacqueslefave4296 Жыл бұрын
@@EDGEoftheOUTBACK It depends. If I'm hunting over a baited patch, I use the 308 with a 165 grain, if I'm on foot I use a 7mm x57mm Mauser with a handloaded with a Speer boat tail spitzer, it is a real tack driver and very little bullet drop and good wind resistance over a long distance. The feral pigs here in Texas have little bugs on them, it seems like the bugs know that they're dead and go to other hosts. If the landowner wants a boar for meat and/or trophy, he has to pick them up and haul them away. I do a necropsy on the sows to do a fetus count, because we count those in the successful cull numbers. Before I start, though, I spray some pyrethrin bug spray to get rid of the remaining insects. Frequently, they have been feeding off root vegetables, such as carrots, beets and radishes, and peanuts, they drive these farmers crazy. I have rarely been refused permission to hunt, but the host farmer usually calls his neighbors and usually they're fine with it and often they want me to hunt their land next. If they have a concern it is stray bullets, besides my reassurances, I keep a few letters of reference with me. I knew a taxidermist, and he had a butcher on call who told me about the meat quality test on feral pigs, he said that if they're old or in obviously bad shape, pass them by. Then he said to excise a piece of the muscle tissue, hold a butane lighter flame next to it, and if it stinks, don't use the meat. It seems to work. Since I necropsy the sows anyway, I cut off the desirable and easily accessible cuts, and then dispose of the rest. The sow meat is more tender anyway. If I can only shoot one in a sounder, I try for the alpha lactating female, since that puts a greater dent in the population growth, and leaving the shoats (little piglets) on their own leaves them vulnerable to coyotes, the occasional bobcat, the more rare Puma, and maybe one of the bigger feral dogs. It's a matter of leveraging nature, we need every advantage we can get because they are reproducing faster than we can hunt or trap them. Happy hunting down under.🙂

I remember doing this 30+ years ago. Supressors were illegal. Night-vision was only found in movies. ARs were too expensive and didn't have the wallop or quality they have now, so everything was 7.62mm or .308. I had a little Tikka .243 that was handy out to about 300m. I eventually got my hands on a MacMillan .50 bolt-action that was good for shooting clear across valleys, out to about 1500m. Then Martin Bryant did his thing and between that and being in the army I gave up shooting for leisure. There are days where I'm sorely tempted to get back into it, especially seeing I'm in Queensland and deer here have no season or tags as they're a pest. Just need to find a good property somewhere to get at them that won't cost an arm and a leg.

We would LOVE to have you hunt feral pigs here in East Texas, they are a curse to farmers and ranchers here, all year around season, night hunting okay, no bag limit. With that .50, if you lined up the pigs well, you could get a "twofer". You can legally hunt them over a baited patch, soured corn works well, and during the winter, they will go for your bait because there is so little other food lying around then, and you will get a warmer break from your Canadian winter.🥶❄️☃️ Happy hunting ! You would need to have the permission of the owner, but they are so desperate for feral pig control, they will almost never refuse, and if they do, there will be a nearby neighbor that will say yes.🙂

I've been watching you and your friends and I know what you guys are doing and it's to bad there's not 2 or 3 dozen of yous out there going at it. I was wondering what your loads are costing you over there? That $23,000 scope was some piece of craftsmanship.

Thanks mate, depends on the make and brand. I mainly reload and the 308Win is about $1.70 AUD a shot.

G’day mate, awesome videos that you are putting out in some great country. I have watched all your videos on thermals, and I have used them a lot when I was in the army. Which one out of all of them do you prefer, I am in the market to get some for my own gats. Cheers

Hi mate. Definitely get a scanner before a scope. For me, I'm running a Pulsar Merger LRF XP50 Pro Thermal Binocular. Or a InfiRay Finder FH35R monocular. Scope is a Pulsar Thermion 2 LRF XP50 Pro 👌
