Follow along as I demonstrate the Action Replay software on my Commodore 64c as well as on the CCS64 and Vice Emulators. I will demonstrate a few game cheats and one game enhancement using codes published on the Freeze64 fanzine.

@6:24 Actually POKEFINDER was a clever way to hack games. It searches through the entire memory for locations where parameters of the game, like the number of lives, are stored. This works by freezing the game several times when different lives are remaining and You give this changed number to the program every time. The cartridge builds a list of all memory locations which stored this variable and then filters entries from it while game progresses. If you try several times the candidates are cut and finally you are likely to hit the correct one. At this point, knowing the location, You are able to force infinite lives to the game by altering the machine code instruction that touches it. The same technique is used to find other parameters of the game like energy, ammo, points etc. and alter these to our willing.

Takes me back, very fond memories of C64. The AR cartridge was hugely useful but, in context to what you're doing here, you should use the 'findpoke' to try finding your own infinite lives etc pokes! As a programmer myself, this was even more useful for disassembling the code!

Excellent Action Replay MKIV Overview! I liked the relaxing background music and the website pages you browsed, read the text there while listening to your overview, paused it for reading a few times. AR MKIV is a really comprehensive monitor program. Liked the Fanzine magazine too.

Datal were big back in the day in the UK They transformed the c64 You could send your old one in for an upgrade cheap and magazines like zzap 64 had lists of action replay codes in them every month If a game cassette was too copied out and would not copy dataset to dataset you could stop the game using the cartridge to get to the flashing cursor then type save making a new loud tape On the back of this tape head aligning tools became popular too Funny the things you remember Also I think they let you make an image of the game in ram and save to tape or floppy disk Full ram or just the part taken by the game Even stage loaders

I remember the azimuth cassette deck mods to help loading those game copies - though the dreaded 'click of despair' was always an issue!

I remember using an Action Replay on my Commodore Amiga 500. It was great for getting unlimited lives in games.

Fast forward to 2024, and this is basically how the Xbox Series S|X does its "quick resume" feature, which lets you swap to the desktop and run other games or shut the console down, and then later come back to the one you were playing before at the same point. Of course, instead of just 64K of RAM, it has to capture up to 8GB and slam it onto the internal SSD in just a few seconds... but the core concept is the same.

Try Final Cartridge 3. With Final Cartridge 3 you can easilly enable/disable sprite collisions on any game without the hassle of poking.

Hey Dude.... you stole one of my topics for a video lol.... Great demo on how to implement the pokes from the freeze 64 fanzine dude. :D

Ha, there is certainly room for videos like that and I would still watch it when you release it, but yeah I thought it would be a good follow up video to do regarding the fanzine, and hopefully draws more people to it.

Thanks for the video! Is anyone know hot to save in Machine Code Monitor of ccs64? I tried as it written in the documentation (and in some other ways) but didn't work. It worked in vice's MCM only.

Got an Action Replay when i was a kid back in the 80s. Cost £35. A lot of money then just for a kid to cheat.

yeah but look at all the other stuff you had with it! You could use the screen editor, you could go into the monitor and change the code, you could back the program up to tape or disk, you had added basic functions, the monitor had great debugging tools and so much more! I paid $135 AUD for mine.. When I had saved up the $135 they had no action replays but they did have the freeze machine. What a piece of crap that was...unfortunately for me i bought it and used it for a year and then finally got an action replay! I eventually sold that crappy cartridge and went and bought an action replay!

@@bytraper Exactly, the AR cartridge was an extremely powerful and extensive toolkit for the games programmer

Haha. Barnsley Badger is a lot easier that way!! I've seen the double jump pickup but I haven't actually been able to get it yet. It's pretty tough.

Is there some specific reason why you're using as old version of VICE as 2.2? besides Action Replay cardridge issues?
@GRayDefender
@GRayDefender 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I actually use 2.4 mostly for stability reasons, but I just downloaded the newer Winvice 3.1 to evaluate.

Well, grab cart binaries pack (and manuals) from ar.c64.org/wiki/Action_Replay I havent tested all but I'm using v6 ( Action_Replay_V6.0_6.0_1989_PAL.crt ) and it works just fine with 2.4 , 3.0 and 3.1, don't have 2.2 atm here so cant test if it works there too :) Other versions should work too I think. I also just went for 3.1 here. Sofar seems ok, 3.0 worked just fine here also. Any special issues there with that compared 2.4? Getting here back to some c64 coding "stuff" so would apreciate comments :)

Great to know. Thanks for the information. I have not had enough time to test 3.1 out, but I did have a problem using the save option from Action Replay using my game Gpac DD. Upon loading the saved game, the sound would always be off, or constant noise for some reason. For that reason I did not demonstrate that feature, but I am sure it works for most games.

Ah, sounds like some SID registers might get corrupted then maybe? Oh well :) My needs with carts are just so I can lazily write some asm stuff if too lazy to fire up assembler so I'm all good if monitor works :) Watched some of your GPAC DD vids earlier after someone pointed me to them, nice stuff. Keep up the good work :D
