In this MicroLesson, you'll learn a simple technique for improvising lead by visualizing a triangle and rectangle shape. Super simple.
This lesson has a solo using this technique that is tabbed out, and the MP3 jam track is available - you can get them both here: www.activemelody.com/microles...

I love when you teach how to find a "pattern" from just one note on the B or E string. That eliminates my need to think and it gives me a place to go back to when I get lost. When I have to think during a solo, it sounds like somebody throwing a bike chain into an F1 engine.

Brian, for the first time ever in my life, I have signed up for a premium account for a KZfaq channel (ActiveMelody). In the past, I was always hesitant because I didn't think I'd get my money's worth and I thought it would take too much time to pick out the few pearls of learning in long lessons. But after watching a couple dozen of your lessons, I was sure that by becoming a premium member, my guitar playing would improve and that my money and my time were being wisely invested. This is because, your lessons present a healthy and balanced dose of theory and application, and you have a great sound and an extensive knowledge of different guitar styles. I'm really excited to start this next chapter in my guitar playing. Thank you!

This is an interesting variation of the BB box. BB superimposes the rectangle on the triangle by using D and E on the first string rather than sliding to the C#. I'll add this to my tool kit. Thanks!

Love the tip about finding the key on the second string …how would you do something similar for a minor key please?
@mojoe9096
@mojoe9096 Жыл бұрын
For A minor it's the same pattern just go down 2 frets so third finger is playing the A instead of your first finger, or you can go up three frets from where he is playing in the video. Both will be A minor. In this video he starts the A major pentatonic in what is sometimes called the "BB King box", go down two frets to A minor and you are in the "House of Blues"

Amazing! Something i still don‘t get: Let‘s say a jam track in the key of A has a chord progression like A - D - E. Can i solo over all three chords using just the A pentatonic, or do i have to change to D and E pentatonic to align with the chord changes?
@Kirk1914

It would certainly help me if, early in your presentation, you might verbalize the intervals of the key of A which the notes in the triangle and rectangle represent.
@activemelody

That would be missing the point and require too much thinking for this concept
@tangomechanic

Brian, I have finally located the triangle and rectangle in the 4th and 5th patterns. This means, for this example, I can start or end the A major pentatonic scale in the 2nd pattern on the 5th fret of the low E strong. Thatʼs new to me as I had thought I need to always start off the root on low E strong with the pattern 1. Can you please verify for me it is true? Thank you.

@@activemelody ty...working with a song now for practice..loop is Am, F...so looking to find that spot....i did find same area using 6th fret 2nd string as my F root....in my mind in the Lydian scale shape...and then using Am penta starting at 5th fret...seems to work nicely.. For the Am im getting the 4,6,b7,1,b3,4 intervals, and for F im getting the 6,1,2,3,5,6... Looks like prob notes in Am scale are the 2 and the 5, and in tbe F its the 4 and the 7(not flatted).. Hope im seeing this correctly.. Or do I need to use an A as the root on the left side of triangle because its in the key of A???
