Actor Gary Sinise Reflects on Faith, Son's Death After Cancer Battle

"He was a man of great faith - great, great faith." That's how actor Gary Sinise describes his 33-year-old son, Mac, who died in January after a harrowing battle with Chordoma, a persistent and rare cancer that starts in the spine. The "Forrest Gump" star told CBN News his son "loved his Catholic faith" and deeply embraced it throughout his journey.
"It was just inspiring to see how it helped sustain him through this cancer battle," Sinise said of the harrowing health fight that started in 2018. For years, the family grappled with it all alongside Mac, trying available medications and anything believed able to potentially offer healing. As long as his son kept fighting, Sinise said he was there to support him.
And that process wasn't easy, as the loving dad recounted the "very disabling and crippling" nature of the disease. After the first tumor was removed in September of 2018, Mac was monitored and by May of 2019, the cancer had returned. "It had come back and it was starting to spread throughout his body," Sinise said. "He was back in the hospital again, and he started chemo and radiation at that point, but there is no cure for this particular cancer. There's no reliable drug that has been used to fight it that has been effective."
The unpredictable nature of the cancer meant doctors would often throw different medicines into the mix, hoping to thwart the malignancy - but to no avail. Mac faced spinal surgery, multitudes of hospital visits, and more. "These tumors were growing very fast," Sinise said. "Uncharacteristically fast for Chordoma." Watch him share the family's journey.

Gary, our only son is currently fighting Sacral Chordoma. He had a very large tumor removed in 2021 and he was informed in 12/23 that the cancer has returned. He is currently undergoing eight weeks/five days per week of radiation and you are so right, the prognosis is not good. It is a very painful, ugly cancer and has altered his life completely. Thank you so much for sharing your son's cancer journey with those of us who are now facing the very same journey with our son. Our son is 53. Again, thank you.

I’m so sorry to hear about your son. I understand how you feel. My little brother, who was like my own son, passed away January first of last year with stage 4 cancer. He didn’t know he had cancer until he was in the last stage. He passed 2 months after his diagnosis. It broke our hearts. He had an amazingly gifted voice, and was a Christian. If it wasn’t for our relationship with God, none of us could have endured this. God bless you Gary. You are a wonderful person. We know we shall see them again soon in heaven.

I so much appreciate Gary's ministry and testimony! I totally understand his grief! I lost my first husband ( a veteran) 82nd airborne! After 58 yrs of marriage and serving God as missionaries in Africa with him for 30 years!then I lost our daughter! I remarried and recently( after 4 yrs and 9 months) lost my second husband to cancer! After my second husband passed away my pastor asked me what my passion was. The Lord showed me that He has given me a heart for young men, because the world is so hard on them and a heart for veterans and our police officers. I've been volunteering with local veterans. And just have a heart to let them know that I care an appreciate them and show them the love of Christ. Thank you Gary, for the work that you do with our veterans ! I was honored and am incredibly blessed to have meet Gary in person, what a grounded, kind and generous man he is! I also worked for Gary’s Foundation at Great Lakes Naval Base monthly for years!! My friend John Masson a triple Amputatee and a Gary Sinise Ambassador traveling around the country raising money for Wounded Warriors, John introduced us! I meet Gary with John and his family after a Lt Dan band, Gary stayed and greeted every person who signed up to meet him! Gary stayed till after 1:00 am talking to everyone and thru the USO I have meet many celebrities NOT ONE is as humble, grateful and kind as Gary Sinise is!! Im so sorry about Gary's family's loss. I went straight to Mac's music and it's wonderful! I lost my husband on 2001 because of cancer. His treatment lasted less than 2 weeks and he was gone from toxic shock syndrome because of the treatment. I lost him quickly. He was 48 years old. Then my step dad, my dad too. But to lose ones own children, I cannot even imagine because your mind cannot go there.. It's a horrible disease and my hug's to all who are going through it. Our Lord God awaits us when it's our time to go home.

I've always liked Gary Sinise, 'Forest Gump' & 'The Stand', I could watch over & over again & never get tired of watching them. I don't follow actors & singers that much because I grew up in Sonora & Columbia in Tuolumne County, I saw actors around so much, they were just normal every day people to me. It shocked me when I saw him on your program this morning. I had no idea his son had cancer & had passed. It's so sad when people are so young & have so much talent & are such good people, who have so much heart & love to give pass away. My heart breaks to hear the story of Mac. I lost my sister to breast cancer at the age of 37. She was an outgoing, vivacious, friendly person. It's still hard to believe she's in Heaven but she is with my parents & The Lord Jesus Christ.

I am so sorry, Gary. Your beautiful son. I lost one of my own at age 13 and that pain is indescribably. Our children should not die before us!! I found great solace in my relationship with the Lord that sustains me to this day. God bless you for all the good work you do.
