@@fatheroffab It was a terrible wager. First place made a bad wager as well, FWIW. 2nd place needed to wager 8801 and first place needed to wager, 2801. First place needs to wager just enough to fend off the double up if they both get it right. Second place is counting on first place being wrong, it’s her only chance barring a very bad wager from first place (like a 0 bet), so she needs to assume first place will get it wrong and bet the least amount of money necessary to win if 2nd place doubles up, 2801 in this case. The second place player got the dream scenario, and didn’t win because she made a a bad bet. Edit: Another commenter suggests if you’re in 2nd place you should consider the 0 bid by the first place player. I think this is correct, from the second place player’s point of view, you don’t want to get it right and lose because 1st place bid zero. Seems risky from the first place player’s point of view, but it could happen. Given that, 2nd place should bid 11,601. The 8000 bid still makes no sense.

@@noxnc It all comes down to how much you feel you know about the category and what the other contestants have to gain or lose.

@@fatheroffab True to an extent. I would say for 1st place if it is a category you just feel you don’t have a chance in, wager 0. At that point you’re saying “Im going to lose any amount I wager so I’ll wager 0 to maximize my score”, then you have to hope the other person doesn’t know that category either. Your fate is in their hands. For second place I don’t see an alternative scenario because if 1st place gets the right answer they will win, barring a very bad wager, so betting enough to beat their minimum-bid-wrong-answer seems like the clear way forward. This all applies to scenarios like the one in this clip, if 3rd place is within range that changes things.

I agree, it’s still a little silly. It’s a bummer that I have to jump through hoops to not get the answer spoiled on a quiz show. Is it a big deal? No, but annoying for sure. Even knowing I have to close my eyes or use my finger to cover, sometimes I forget and get spoiled anyways.

What a terrible wager by the 2nd contestant. If you have more than half of the earnings of the 1st place competitor, but less than 2/3, your only way to win is to wager in hopes you get it right and she misses it. So, you assume she is going to bet enough to beat you by at least a buck if she gets it right and you double up. In this instance the 1st place has to bet at least 2,801. If she misses it she'll have no more than 23,199. From 14,400 the 2nd place contestant must bet at least 8,800.

Fun fact: The last time Jamie Lee Curtis was on Jeopardy was on Cris Pannullo's 13th game on American Thanksgiving Eve. Also a personal fact: Jamie Lee Curtis was one of my childhood crushes, at age 10. And I almost guessed Olivia Newton John until I saw the name Laurie! 😂😭

Laurie, the titular character from the Babysitter Murders. Just kidding. They changed the name of the movie to Halloween. It's a campy movie from the 1970's that featured an escaped killer wearing a James T Kirk mask with no eyebrows. Of course it was up to the babysitter to keep everyone safe. It was a surprise hit that spawned a franchise, thus the seven times JLC played the character.
