My opinion before any clues: If I have learned one thing about Jane he often times isn't that confident, he just uses that to have people tell the truth. Him standing up, looking at her and then confidently saying "Yes, You were." gives the woman a sense of "Oh, he figured me out cuz he obviously saw smth in my expression that told on me" and so she admits to it. That doesnt necessarily mean Jane knew for sure or was that confident, he just acted. He does that a lot lol I think he even admitted that to Lisbon and i think this was one of the cases. The psychological distancing might have give him an idea that she MIGHT be lying and so he used this tactic of being confident to basically have her admit it. If he was wrong, he would just played it off. :D

When it comes to Patrick as a character, he tends to guess a lot. Even if he doesn’t believe the answer cuz he wants to see the reaction or trick the person into saying or doing something. Confidence in another can make you unsure of your own answer and knowledge even if it’s a known fact like the sky is blue. If someone confidently says it isn’t then you start thinking that maybe we aren’t talking about a clear sky or a day sky or whatever. You create your own reasons why you are wrong and can trick yourself into giving up information.
@sh33pboi

My head-canon for reading the dead guy at 9:41 is that Patrick sometimes just makes up some unimportant details to seem more impressive. Like you said nobody is that good at deductive reasoning... but they can lie. He started and ended with the important information (that he was killed for romantic reasons) everything else was forgettable filler. Some of the details like 'moderate success' with cougars and playing guitar 'not well' are both subjective and difficult to verify but by adding them to his Sherlock Holmes routine he can pretend to have more information than he really does making him seem more competent. Maybe he does it to impress the local police and make them more cooperative, maybe it's habit from when he was a conman or maybe he just finds it fun.

That’s the whole point of being a mentalist, you know just what to say. If you pay attention in the show Jane is always saying stuff that sounds so smart but in reality is just word gargle , it’s a cold reading tactic but yes you called it for sure

2:50 Patric Jane has an idea, that she is lying, but doesn't know for sure. so he is kinda gambling. Pretending to be sure and put more pressure on her this way. If this had failed, he would have been the weirdo anyway. In this case, it worked. Sometimes, you just have to take risks, make people upset, knock on the bush and watch, what comes out.

My guess (without having seen the whole video yet) -- He was fishing. Part of Reid technique is to immediately stop the person being interrogated from denying, as the more someone denies something the more they get confident in their story. Add on a bit of theater to make the suspect believe that the interrogator has reliable information. Also, by doubling-down you put the suspect into even more stress, so if their tells will become even more noticeable and you can more easily confirm if you are correct or not, and further lies will be easier to detect.

The mentalist is no not sure that the interrogated woman was not sleeping with Gordon. He says he is to get her reaction and reveal the truth. And the question about the book you recommended to read "Influence" by Robert B. Cialdini I was surprised to know that some people were attacking weather forecast announcers due to bad weather forecasts. I hope this is not happening now!

Also about the question , I think it started by the changes in her expression as well as her changing her sitting position (but it looks like she was shifting in order to have a proper look at Mr. Patrick) and in the end Mr. Patrick did a bluff , kind of a trap. Thank you Mr.Spidy for delivering such an awesome piece of knowledge to us 😊.

Once again a great video. On the first scene, besides the point that you mentioned. You see that she looked away. But I dont think thats the case why Partick says that she was having a affaire. In the beginning of the scene the suspect says that she wont tell anything to the police. And now she is starting to talk. Even if she diddn't had a affaire, her mind was distracted from not talking. In this way she would more likely answer more questions.

I think Jane just threw that question like a spaghetti at the wall to see if it sticks. Maybe he was expecting a more confused or insulted reaction back and she was pretty mellow about it. By staring a person straight in the eye you create psychological discomfort. If a person is already uncomfortable and you think you got a tell on them but not quite sure, I think this could be a great way of zooming in on that tell by building up the pressure. Everyone can lie on the internet, a lot fewer people can lie in person, very few people can lie to somebody straight in the face and not show a single sign that they lack confidence in their statement.

Jane didn't learn that from reading her. Yes, I am trying to rememeber the episode, and I do recall the biker gang thing. I am thinking he knew this from other sources and is simply declaring it as fact. Makes him come off a little supernatural, and dismays the subject. She isn't nearly so confident afterwards, or as confrontational. I think he knew from the wife and son.....If I recall correctly.... Maybe he was guessing it was her, but he knew it was someone, and she was a likely candidate. We'll see!

I aim to cultivate my accountability, and I work hard to keep my word, and being direct, truthful, or I truthfully go silent or tell someone to beat it. I've studied all manner of manipulation. I have NO desire to deceive, and view that as a lesser power than persuading and pre-suading a target to come over to sync with my resolve. He got up and moved to get a better look at her face. The purpose of that was not to actually try to get a read on her but to make her think he was trying to get a read on her and then gauge her reaction to that. In her mind she's thinking that he's trying to tell if she is lying or not and that makes her give certain other tells. The subtle movements such as the slight turn away from him, etc. The key to this technique is to try to maneuver them into a falsehood, even an irrelevant one so that when you expose the lie, it ramps up the intimidation factor with them thinking that you can tell anytime they are lying, even if you really can't.

She would be telling the truth!If she said something like :"Um..no uh i didn't i swear i didn't"or"how do you know?" or something like that(which of course would be the best).Then she would be lying/

You should study Statement Analysis. It reveals even more than body language. "I wasn't sleeping with Gordon." Negation statement and distancing language by using the word "with." Statement analysis is my favorite technique for getting to the truth
@SpideyHypnosis
@SpideyHypnosis 3 жыл бұрын
Lie detection absolutely takes verbal into account 100%. I talk a lot about exclusions and non answer statements and resume statements in my lie detection video. In fact if I had a choice between analyzing someone without hearing them or without seeing them, I’ll pick blind every time. However, I fail to see how “with” is distancing? It’s the logical proverb to follow “sleeping.” How would a truth teller say that sentence? The other thing is “wasn’t” actually points more towards honestly than deception. One of the key signs of deception in language is “non contractions” a liar might say “I WAS NOT” instead of wasn’t, to make sure they’re point is clear. Famous example “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” classic lie.
@thegentlemanwolf
@thegentlemanwolf 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, I really enjoy your videos and everything you share, exactly what I'm interested in. Whenever someone makes a negative statement when they weren't asked a yes or no question, then it can indicate that the subject matter is sensitive to them. Her answering with a negation could be an appropriate response to the question, in this instance. The word "with" separates her, creating distance from him. I at the beginning of the sentence, Gordon at the other end. So, if this were real people instead of actors, a statement like this would indicate sensitivity and efforts to distance and minimize (like you mentioned by pointing out the words sleeping with instead of affair.) Thanks Spidey.

Great question. If you have me a list of 50 people and asked me to remember them; no problem because I’m counting them to memory on purpose but thinking back and recalling every person I’ve shook hands with in the last few years requires me to remember everytime I shook someone’s hand, THEN remember who they are. don’t think it can be done.

@@solidus4prez I’ve talked about memory palace in two other breakdowns. That’s not how a memory palace works. It’s not for long term things like this. Everytime you use your memory palace you clear it out to remember the new information. So unless he had a SEPARATE memory palace to specifically remember people who’s hand he shook, he didn’t use his memory palace.

Pacing and leading: I sell boardgames. I've sold stupid amounts of game called "Dead of Winter", a zombie survival game by seeing people looking at "Zombies!!!", a far cheaper game, with similar theme and going "I really shouldn't say this as a salesperson, but you don't really want to buy that game, it's just not that good. But if you'd want a really good one, you might want to try this one instead." This ends up getting the customer on my side, as I've helped them out by warning them about a bad purchase. Now when I recommend another game, they feel the recommendation comes from someone who has their best interest at heart, even if the recommended one is more than twice the price. (It also helps on the long term, as Zombies!!! really is a bad game and people who buy it are less likely to come back and buy more, whereas Dead of Winter is quite good. When they're thinking about getting an expansion for it or a new game, they'll remember "the nice guy who gave such a good recommendation" and return to the store. I love it when I can combine manipulation, truthfulness and nerdyness in one interaction.)

A video idea/question, lately there have been an increase in AR Games and some as damaging as Q-Anon where the viewer is giving a Davinci Code type clue to uncover a "secret" going on in plain sight. Somehow this re enforces their beliefs and hooks the viewer in to conspiracy theories. What is this phenomonon called and what psch studies illustrates this effect?

I think the answer is post-assumption statement, Jane confidently told her that to see her reaction if he was right, she'd lose confidence and confessed, if he's wrong, she would object his statement even further

The I wasn't sleeping with Gordon line wasn't just psychological distancing but also a freeze, a neck exposure, and a posture adjustment. Under the behavioral table of elements that gets her a total score of 12 on the deception scale ranking her as barely deception highly likely so that's probably why he called her on lying.

I think Jane, as a character, often throws in details like not playing well or with a hint of jazz when it’s basically irrelevant and not going to be verifiable anyway just as an exaggeration of what he can actually do-said with confidence for showmanship…and out of arrogance, maybe, too. He embellishes beyond what he is able to deduce-knowing full well he’s doing that-to exaggerate his ability.

It’s realllly hard to know when a trained poker player is bluffing because 1) they’re trained to not react 2) I can’t interrogate them, usually out signals leak during an interaction and 3) the consequences of their lie are winning money not going to jail so the mind isn’t scared of getting caught which is the reason we see what we see to begin with.

Great video. Interesting analysis on the male female couple who you, like Jane, believed them to be innocent because they were not looking around during Jane's interaction, they were more impatient and wanted to leave. In contrast, in another episode, Jane again had a group of people in front of him, he said the guilty one was there, and this time the one NOT to move was guilty because they knew they were and didn't have to look for another..... If you see what I mean! 😁
@SpideyHypnosis

It’s not so much that they weren’t looking around it’s that they didn’t seem too stressed at all. But like I said, it’s fiction. You need to dig deeper in the real world because both stillness and certain motions can be an indication of deception. So again; nobody is that good in the real world.

Patrick Jane was faking his confidence in order to use it as a mind virus to get the woman's reaction. If she wasn't sleeping with the guy she'd immediately say, "No, I wasn't". But his "confidence" made her stop and wonder whether he actually knew. And that gave her away. By the way, great video as usual.

Not very good with this kinda thing but I notice Neil having his arms crossed from the get go before he is even approached and shifting his stance when approached, and I detect relief when asked about his worst mistake of his life and recieving a complement about it. (Patric probably complimentet specifically to see if it would relieve Niel) I also notice Niel licking his lips very quickly when you see him in profile. Just my 5 cents.

All good signs except the crossed arms. There’s a lot of myths surrounding crossed arms. The action of crossing arms doesn’t mean much, it could just be a comfort thing. Crossed arms with tension in the fingers is important. But everything else you said is valuable 😊 and I agree with Jane’s compliment as a test.

Wait.... That's what pacing and leading is? Lol I've always thought it was something else. 🤦 I have alot to learn. Thanks for being a great teacher Spidey. I think it's the coolest thing how you're able to tell so much about people from such little information. I never noticed any of those things from the last episode but I definitely see them now that you pointed it out. Question...does superiority and entitlement go hand in hand? Bc when he asked about the massage it kinda seemed like he just expected her to do that even if she did know that specific technique. Like he was entitled to that or something and maybe that's not really what that was but to me it seems that way but I'm still really curious if those 2 things go together...
@SpideyHypnosis
@SpideyHypnosis 3 жыл бұрын
It’s actually a really great question. I would say that most people who have a strong sense of entitlement also gave a tendency to have superiority issues. I think it’s pretty safe to correlate in that direction. But I’m not 100% sure that everyone who has a need for superiority feels entitled. I’m a good example, i definitely have some superiority issues but I’m rarely to never entitled. This is a tough one… 🤔

@@SpideyHypnosis ok rightfully so... you're Spidey! Lol but you always seem super humble though🥰 I'm like seriously thinking about this now. I guess I can probably see myself both ways lolol if thats even possible? And yea same I'm not really big on entitlement either. it's usually one of my pet peeves but I'm sure there are probably times where I've felt entitled to things. So that probably makes me kind of a hypocrite lol... Either way it just seemed like those two things would go well together idk🤷 I honestly had no idea psychology was so intricate until recently... definitely interesting though 😅 thank you Spidey❤️
