I was born and raised in Japan until grade 8 and I remember kids in my class used to make fun of me and call me 外人 (foreigner) or when I didn’t do well on my Japanese test they would say it was cause I wasn’t a “real” Japanese person. I used to be bothered by it a lot but when I moved to Canada the kids here would basically make the same jokes. So I realized that it’s probably just an age thing and not a racial thing. (I am half Japanese and half Canadian)

it's because that man doesn't speak much English. The kid even asked him if he spoke English and he said he only spoke a little. He has been raised in Japan and learnt Japanese as his primary language. And Japanese tend to pronounce Jack as Jakku, and he didn't realize what the kid was referring to until he specifically said "My name is Jack", then he said "Ah! Jakku!"

His Mom was named Yoshi. And she was one of the nicest and kindest ppl you could ever meet! Unfortunately he has passed on. But I remember them all fondly! Especially his little brother Corey. Because of him, I now have two nephews named Korei and Korey, because both my sisters loved him too!😊 Coming across this brought back fond memories of them!

Well you have to consider that Japan compared to those "sadistic" Europeans have a tiny foreign population so cultural and ethnical conflicts barely exist because those minoritys have no political power. If Japan would have a foreign population of about 20%, religious, cultural and ethnical conflict would accure far more often. By the way, if you are reffering about the colonial past of some european countrys with "sadistic" the Japanese have a colonial and sadistic past themselve. For instance in an interview with an american WWII veteran he said they found corpses of their dead comrades tied to trees that have been used for bayonet drills.
@sarenareth689
@sarenareth689 5 жыл бұрын
These "sadistic" Europeans happen to live in peace with tens of millions of foreigners from all over the world. Same for the "sadistic" Americans xD The difference is that these foreign-looking Japanese don't wallow in an eternal victim mentality if they are mistaken for being foreigners. Meanwhile in America they will scream "racist!!" at you if you even dare ask where they are from.

Honestly, i am French African and i grew up in France in Paris. Until now i did not experience racism or discrimination. I am not claiming it does't exist, just my experience. But when i see what happening in USA to black american, i just cannot believe it, to me this is crazy. I think there is a major cultural problem in USA. My uncle works in oil-producing country. Few years ago he worked in USA in Houston, as a posted worker. People in community were very surprised to see an african working as a senior manager. Black people couldn't believe a black man could work as senior manager. And white people working with and for him had difficulties to accept an african as manager. My uncle saw in USA, i should add in Houston, things he saw nowhere else. And he has travelled many country.

Fun inteviews to be sure. My kids are half-Japanese and my oldest son did experience some discrimination/bullying when he went to Japan and spent about six weeks in school there -- they would chase him around the playground yelling "gaijin da! gaijin da!" This was in first or second grade. His response, something which still makes me proud of him to this day, was to hang around those kids until they came to like him. My middle son never experienced it when he was in school in Japan -- he's very talkative and expressive and direct, and if anything I think his personality was probably more foreign to them than his appearance. Fortunately, his personality is lively enough that most people can't help but like him.

What's interesting for me as a half Japanese, half Black person is that Japanese people praise how light skinned I am and how I don't look black at all. I definitely look mixed with something, but I was just surprised at how "not looking black" was such a good thing in some people's eyes. More specifically, "wow you're so pale, you don't look black at all, good good". More often than not it's a subconscious form of anti-blackness. I'm still treated with respect though, definitely.

Hmm... this might be tough... xD I don't necessarily have a preference to an anime but I guess "slice of life" would be amongst my top favorites because it's not always cliche and not easy to predict what happens next. Fantasy is also amongst my favorite anime I'm into as well. I don't always watch a lot drama and romance but sometimes find myself watching it every once in a while. As for the anime I've watched... It's probably a lot more than I thought I've watched over the past few years. The anime I binge watched in the 6th and 7th grade... Prepare yourself o-o Angel Beats, Akame ga Kill, Attack on Titan Black Butler, Berserk, Blue Exorcist, Bleach D.Gray-man(never finished it but thought it was pretty cool), Darker than Black, Devil May Cry, (video game with an anime) Donganronpa, (another video game thing) Death Note, Demon King Daimao Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Panic, Fruits Basket Hero Tales, Haikyu (the only sports anime I enjoy), Hunter x Hunter(didn't finish but enjoyed it) Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (I just learned that was the actual translation o3o) Kill la Kill (I didn't even watch it past episode 3 tho, too weird for me xD) Legend of the Legendary Heroes Magi, MÄR(probably my all time favorite), Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, Mekakucity Actors No Game No Life, Noragami, The Tower of Druaga, Tales of Vesperia, Tales of the Abyss (tales of series video games) X (found it on Netflix one day, pretty interesting concept) And that's about it. Sorry the list is longer than I thought it would be. 😅

This was a very interesting video, I'm not sure I can quantify the experience though because the people involved might be coming off as being polite, but yet it doesn't feel that way. For example when the interviewee, says that people stop speaking their common language Japanese and try speaking English something that neither party can do effectively. Again, all I can say is that this was a interesting video to watch and comment on.

He had medium brown skin like me (I'm half Mexican and white with Puertorican), he could pass for a full blood Mexican, but he can also pass for a full blood Japanese (only with brown skin). I thought that was cool, being mixed myself of course.

I always thought that "Asian genes" are more dominant than European ones, but that half British guy didn't look Japanese at all (imo).
@rs4runner
@rs4runner 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, I've thought the opposite. I have many mixed couples in my family and always it's either an even split or the non-asian genes stand out more. If you look at mixed Asian celebrities for example, Keanu Reeves, Enrique Iglesias, Tiger Woods, and Bruno Mars they don't look majority Asian.

+rs4runner Many of the people listed are quarter Asian though sooo.... But it just depends really, look at Yumi Lambert (she is a quarter Japanese but with light green eyes and Japanese eye shape). You'll never quite know for sure with genetics especially if you are mixed (and what happens if the half or what not is mixed also, that also plays into genetics).

Flowii NyAA Umm, it's a biological term. There are dominant and recessive genes. Brown eyes contain dominant genes, blue eyes carry recessive genes for example. That's what I have been taught back in school and it is what you will find when you're gonna "open a book"

I am half Japanese Half black aswell but I look more asian than other mixes and in the West I it sounds like discrimination and rude comments are worse than in Japan because I here people making jokes almost daily
@loffagood556
@loffagood556 4 жыл бұрын
No, no, no.. The difference is that we care more about it. In the west we consider more things to be discriminating/racist compared to what most of Asia would consider discriminating/racist etc. And we will deffiently tell you if we feel discriminated against, where as that might not be as normal in many Asian countries, given the fact that Asians for example tend to have more respect for elders and people with authority/status. For example In many Asian countries its ok to tell your friends/family and perhaps others that they are fat or getting fat. But in a big part of the west that would be considered very rude to say.

In the USA they tend to care so much about race because of their history; they talk about race/racism all the time. Thats why that fight never ends for them. Some people are genuinly racists and some people are very easily offended.

Hey, great interview! I was just in Japan a couple months ago, visiting my daughter who's lived there for the past 3 years. Many people did try to speak English with us at all the various places we visited, but when my daughter answered in Japanese (she's fluent), they always switched to Japanese (sometimes looking quite relieved to do so). She even got complimented on her Japanese by a person who helped me with an eye exam and choosing glasses (they're much cheaper than here in the U.S.!). Loved Japan, and the people are amazing--can't wait for a return visit!

I am mixed and I live in America. I still get asked where I’m from. Fortunately everyone already assumes I understand English and I do. Mixed people just have different experiences. Not necessarily a bad thing, but definitely interesting.

Hi Yuta, I'm French, Swiss from dads side and Japanese, Malaysian from Mums side. I've lived in Singapore, France, China, Jakarta, Italy and mostly in Australia. I"m 33 years old, speak French, Italian, English and Indonesian, lost Mandarin along the way. I used to talk with my hand when i lived in Italy took me a while to get out of the habit people thought it was funny, i found it fascinating, it puts more emotion to the sentence. But when your on the receiving end of getting insulted by Italian people it really hits you, amplifies the insults!
