Not a really good advice considering grammar is commonly subjected to context (especially in Japan). And particularly bad advice considering learning a new language usually means learning a new grammar system wich exists independently and completely disconected from other grammar systems you may be familiar with such as the one from your mother language and I own the authority to say this as it is since english is my second language and I barely know any grammatical rules about english yet I can read and write it almost flawlessly (speaking not so good but that's besides the point). And let me tell you, portuguese grammar (my mother language) is significantly harder than english and has much more bullshit going on with its grammar (example: each noun has a gender, wich roughly means that if it exists, it must be either male or female and because of this, there are different verb conjugations, particles and sometimes rules applied, this makes no sense at all yet it's a fundamental aspect of my mother language that gets completely dropped off once I became fluent in english, and this is not all: portuguese has a long list of rules and some usually come with a shit ton of exceptions, usually making the rules meaningless, the only thing I think is bullshit about english is spelling and too many words or expressions with multiple meanings, english is too short sometimes but generally speaking it's a much better language for me to express myself and the grammar is far superior than the grammar of my mother language ). Grammar can very easily become a waste of time on the scheme of language learning, I only reccomend learning grammar you'll hear it or see it being used more than once a lifetime or if it becomes too complicated, ignore it and just learn the rest through repetition and practical usage. That's just my opinion. Peace.

To make it worse, those same schools often advertise "we have only natives!" or so when they don't realize some very well-versed foreigners speak and know a given language better than most natives of it, particularly on grammar uses, and also in telling dialect from main language apart. There is just ONE important thing that Italian guy forgot to mention, though, which is just as important: while grammar basically IS essential and of utmost importance, since it's what allows you to know what you're doing with a language instead of having memorized concepts you don't really grasp, or memorized keywords and terms, it is CRITICAL that you *_do not underestimate vocabulary._* I remember I used to think JUST like him on that regard, but then I learned and paid the price once I mastered a language's grammar, but lacked the vocabulary (since it wasn't as interesting or important for me), resulting in me not being able to use the language in a natural, native-like manner. But in short: Grammar = Engine (like a game's) Vocabulary = Tools If you have the platform/engine, but no tool you can use it with, you consequently also cannot use the engine itself. Likewise, if you have the tools, but no platform/engine, you'll have no idea of what the hell you're actually doing, either. For the latter, though, you can always become a parrot, but that's not a long-term solution.

I spent 2 weeks travelling France and one of the only sentences I could string together was "Je ne parle pas francais" (I can't speak French) If you're just a touro it's a pretty important phrase to learn. Stops a lot of awkward situations.

I visit Japan on occasion (because I have to, I'd avoid it if I could, terrible country to visit) and I don't bother with the Japanese language at all. The number of Japanese who can speak English is great enough for me to not have to learn their native language, and since I don't care about their culture, food, or society and am only in Japan for reasons of obligation, not speaking Japanese doesn't affect me at all.
