I was once given Lord of the Rings Monopoly as a gift, picked up at a garage sale. Having long fallen in love with A Game of Thrones and Twilight Imperium, I had no desire to play it, but said my thanks, figuring I'd at least get the cool Ring that came with it and the die with an Eye of Sauron for a 1. I got the die, but turns out whoever was selling decided to keep the Ring for themself. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. It is a tempting trinket indeed...

Fantastic video on Monopoly. The ONLY reason I can think that Monopoly still comes to the forefront is it's cost. I love me some modern board games, but a lot of the games mentioned in this video retail for over twice the cost of Monopoly (except for Forbidden Island, which is a steal at it's price). When mom or dad go to the store to pick up a game for game night, they understandably go for A) something they recognize, and B) something that doesn't cost much. I think getting low cost alternatives into big box stores (such as Sushi Go Party, Codenames, and Pandemic) will really help to get people off of Monopoly and onto better games.

This is the core problem. Brand recognition and competing on price is key to success. So many good board games cost not even twice- 4 times as much as monopoly, risk or so many famous board games. They're also often not publicly recognisable or sold widely. You have to really know board games to find good ones

The reason Monopoly is so cheap is because it has mass production lowering it's costs really deep. As long as people realize en masse that there are better options it will be more competitivo and that will happen when the old 80s dinousaurs get extinct. It was all they knew at their young age.

Brilliant as usual, Jon. And, just in case it hasn't been mentioned in one of the other 1,700+ comments, when Elizabeth Magie invented "The Landlord's Game," she intended it as a cautionary tale. What became "Monopoly" was SUPPOSED to make Timmy cry and learn to hate unfairness. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Landlord's_Game

Actually, I think Monopoly's bad reputation is a compliment to its designer, Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips, who apparently wanted to show exactly how cruel and unfair Capitalism could be. I've read that somewhere and that information could be false, but I do think it's the perfect demonstration of social decadence. It only needs to add some war crimes and environmental catastrophes to be the ultimate real-life (depressing) board game. I love your videos, thanks for sharing your experiences :)

It doesn't matter what the original statement was, and this game isn't really that game, because it isn't a good game. I thought "board games" were all like monopoly for the longest time. Especially since I didn't have anyone to tell me otherwise, so I avoided them. I could've been board gaming a lot earlier than I had been if I woulda known. I wanna have fun (and that fun can be from different stuff like optimizing moves, a rich story, trying to reach a shared goal etc) when I come together with others and try to have a nice night.

It was riginally called 'The Landlord Game', and was supposed to highlight the evils of slum landlords. Unfortunately, and somewhat ironically, Charles Darrow turned it into a game which was the exact opposite of Magie-Phillips vision. Even worse, he managed to obtain the copyright to the game, thus denying her of any financial compensation.

Monopoly still remains in the collection and gets played every year or so for nostalgia purposes. I have many many fond memories playing this game with my dad in my youth. Yeah, the game sucks by today's standards, but if it can bring back good memories, it's worth bringing out on occasion. And then after reminiscing about the ol' days with grandpa, it time to enjoy the more modern board games.

It is true that there are worse games than Monopoly, but that's the wrong way of looking at it. When it comes down to it, there's just too many games that are better than monopoly, that accomplish what its trying to do without the know design flaws found in monopoly. Not that the designer was bad, but rather we have learned and evolve game design since then (the game is 82 years old and it shows). The way I see it I wouldn't watch a bad movie from 1935 because there are worst movies than that one, when I can just watch all the newer great movies that have learned from previous publications and improved from there.

I played the 'more realistic' alternative to Monopoly once, 'Anti-Monopoly', which has certain players doing the normal monopolising (take everything for yourself) and other players being competitors, i.e trying to spread out everything to... drive prices up or something? All I remember is that it was even worse than Monopoly because it just NEVER ENDED... it just kept going and going and no one seemed to be winning so we just gave up.

some ideas to make monopoly playable: 1: roll 3 dice, pic 2 (roll triples go to jail,) this will give the player an option on moment, will go to jail more though. ... 2: limit the amount of times you can pass Go to 10 times. it will take you about 50 rolls on average, then the game ends. 3:auction off the property before the game starts starting with boardwalk going counter clock wise, with a minimum buying price of the properties morgage. 4:free parking has all the chance and community chest money you have to pay on it plus $200 if you land there you can pay $50 to roll thriples. you get they money if you do...1/36 chance 5:most money and property wins after 10 circles around the board.

Sorry - I have to dispute the suggestion that Monopoly is pure luck. There is a significant degree of skill involved, if played by the rules. But its a terrible game. Here's why: 1) Almost everyone thinks they know how to play it, but almost no one does - so you will invariably end up playing some weird house-ruled variant which removes any aspect of skill. The most commonly ignored rule (and removing this single rule makes the game almost entirely luck based) is that if someone lands on a property and does not wish to buy the property it is sold at auction to the highest bidder. 2) Even after everyone at the table knows who's won the damned game continues for another 20 minutes 3) 90% of the game has little impact on who wins and is a complete waste of time. You may as well trim the game to a simple auction game where everyone has a set amount of money and tries to get the best properties for that money. Give me a game of Through the Ages, Power Grid, Eclipse or Steam over a game of Monopoly any day :)

Although I agree that Monopoly is a terrible game, I do feel that this video does do it a bit of an injustice. There is skill in monopoly, it is in the trading system. This of course is also influenced a lot by luck, since what you have to trade is random, but it is actually fun in a four or more player game to navigate the complex series of trades to get to your desired sets. Of course some people just dont bother trading to give people sets at all, but that's only because monopoly is a terrible game that atracts terrible game players.

@blackbot7113
@blackbot7113 2 жыл бұрын
@@forklift1712 Luck plays a part in almost every board game, even the one used as a counterpoint - Ticket to Ride. Monopoly undoubtedly has a huge amount of luck involved - not as bad as Snakes&Ladders, but still insanely high. So you are absolutely right that getting leverage relies on luck...but unlike Snakes&Ladders you can still use skill to manipulate your opponents and make favorable trades for you. I think that's the point Joe was trying to make! Not saying Monopoly is a GOOD game by any means, just saying that bad luck can be mitigated UP TO A CERTAIN DEGREE by actual skill.

Back then, monopoly was a game my entire cousin hated and it was impossible to talk to one another after a game. Hopefully new games emerging out of board game will be fun to play with your family for upcoming festivities xD

another great video, I've done college essays on this very topic. it was cool to see games that are counter to the pitfalls of Monopoly. it might also have been a good talking point to take the positive things people see in Monopoly and highlight games which do those better, the simplicity and even some push your luck games.

Thanks for making a great channel about board games that has great, (and perhaps more importantly) concise videos. Sometimes I want to hear about a great new game, or want to see a clever opinion on an old one, but don't want to sit through 50 minutes of video. Well done.

A nice vid though a shame there is no mention of Catan. When people as why I like Catan I tell them that it in monopoly you roll, move and buy everything you land on for ages, then there is a really interesting bit in the middle where you do trading, then you all build houses and hotels and roll and move some more until someone wins. Catan is the interesting trading bit in the middle of a game of monopoly and makes that the whole game. Whoever trades the best wins.

There is a game of skill buried in Monopoly, but it is easy to miss it. It is the one or two trades that all the players make once the properties have been randomly distributed by the dice. After a few trips around the board, everyone to randomly gets what they get. After the trades, many more trips around the board determine who made the best trades. That was Monopoly in three sentences. Playing time 45 min - 6 hours.

Hit the nail on the head, Monopoly has caused so many arguments in our family and has succeeded in putting at least one of my kids off boardgames. How can I persuade my late teen kids that they should be playing boardgames?

I mean...randomness is needed for any gap of skill to prevent a player winning a significant amount of the time, and at least some randomness is fun because it means the game can't be the same every time. Randomness is good, but yes, monopoly does have too much of it since it's what the entire game relies on for doing anything but reacting to where you landed.

I have to agree with you. I, as probably many others, was once introduced to board games with a game of Monopoly. I was 8-9 y.o back then. Of course the game felt fun at the time, but the joy didn't last long, and the box ended up hidden in the loset. A few months ago my nephew got his own copy with a card reader for a bank (no cash tossing anymore), but the fun ended even more abruptly, as the "only lucky dice rolls win" fell of the game overwhelmed everyone. The next day my nephew got a brand new Carcassone from me - a game still entry level, but much more pleasing to all the family. Some games that were deigned a while ago weren't thought out to be symmetrical or to give everyone a fair chance, because it was a time of Ludo, Backgammon and the sorts - games driven by luck. Designers gad an idea that the only thing to do is to make up a board on which your pieces will be placed using a dice roll. Nowadays I am glad to have a quadrillion of options to choose from. I love rolling dice in games, but I also want to have some control over the actions they allow. Interaction is the key to success. You want to play the game, not be played by it. I am looking forward to more videos form you :) Cheers

Amusing video, as TotalBiscuit points out, might have been worth mentioning that the whole point of Monopoly was that it was designed to illustrate how unfair business was (is?) and how random it is that one person can end up having a monopoly while everyone else goes broke. So it does accomplish what it was designed to do. Which makes it not very fun. Another reason people hate it is that it drags on, but that tends to be because people play with house rules like the pile of money in the middle which you receive if you land on free parking, and many people are unaware of the auction rule that should result in every property being purchased immediately when it is landed on (either by the person who landed on it or someone else). For many (like me), Monopoly was their first slightly complicated board game (one up from Sorry and Kerplunk) and so we still have a fond attachment to it, despite a complete lack of desire to ever play it again.

I'm not sure I've ever finished a game of Monopoly. It always seems to end because no one wants to play anymore, not because someone wins.

“Thanks to those pesky dice, Monopoly is a game that could theoretically last forever.” I have never played a game of Monopoly that DIDN’T last forever. You know within about 30 minutes who’s going to win and from then on it drags on forever.
