This is exactly I did on my 1st gen MDX and what big difference it makes. Fantastic video.

Thanks for video, I just did the work as preventive maintenance (no error - 07 MDX with 120k) couple things: * you can actually re-use all the parts and clean instead. The only thing I got was EGR valve gasket ($1) and top orange gasket (dealer wanted $45, but can be found around $10 ebay mine was still good and not flat at all) and ton of brake cleaner ($3 a can). The EGR valve is closer to 150-200! * no need to disconnect battery * #1 I couldn't disconnect 'breather" pipe as the clip won't pull back and it's not a straight tube (got lip inside). I could ONLY rotate your #2 air intake hose out of the way to unbolt throttle body (which is connected with tubes underneath (coolant ? don't mention removing them) so found it easier to leave it in the engine bay and clean it there instead. * I made mistake to unbolt the manifold outside bolts - only needed if you plan on opening it in half (and need another gasket) which would make it much easier to clean as it has so many connected chambers * for torq looks like 22nm/195"# for size 12 bolt, 12nm/106"# for smaller size 10 bolt

Always always disconnect the battery when you're going to work on it. Anything could happen

Guys/Gals the torque spec for the throttle body @8:45 is twenty two NM. The French accent make it sounds like 282 but if you listen carefully, I actually said twenty two.

Had the same identical problem on my wife's 2007 MDX. Spent 4 hours yesterday (my birthday 12/14/13) performing the repair. Video was perfect as well as the instructions, and pictures. A very useful and noteworthy video. Thanks!

well i did the removal and cleaning of the intake and EGR valve yesterday, and i did have the p0401 code popping up . i was getting enormous pieces of carbon flying out hitting me in the face . Started her back up and no code last night. But this morning the check engine light popped back on and it gave me a P0404 code . WT F the general consensus on Acura forums seem to be that their might be a piece of carbon that i couldn't reach let loose and is now making the egr solenoid stick . So hooray tomorrow i get to pull it apart again. at least the intake is simple to remove. did you get any issues after you removed and replaced yours?
@selwyn121410 жыл бұрын
I didn't have any problems. Really took my time cleaning intake. Wore out dryer brush removing carbon flakes and 3 cans of brake cleaner too. Used my car vac (smaller attachments) to go deeper into manifold to remove carbon flakes. Then followed it up by using my shop vac. Haven't had any isses since. Even gets better gas mileage now. Good luck!

Terry Wiley cool thanks im about to upload a video to show what caused the p0404 code and the fix. Easy fix i pulled the egr valve out not removing the intake and saw hard chunks of carbon caught between the pintle on the egr valve and the mating surface i replaced the egr valve cause the spring seemed weaker than the new one. And ao far 50 miles and now problems.

Why NM in ft lb how much
@henrymatthews936510 жыл бұрын
awesomely informative video. Egr valves are never in an easy to reach spot and normally are attached to metal tubes that clog up . To alleviate this problem from resurfacing you should use nothing but premium fuel in your X. I have the same code and issues with my X, and will be doing this to it shortly after i get it back from the recall of the trans fluid and flashing the TCM. Really fast is there a way you know of to make the tire pressure monitoring system reset or relearn mode?
@alaind8314 жыл бұрын
actually on many cars an Oil Catch Can can greatly reduce carbon/soot generated out as oil never burns clean. cleaning your piston (sea foam), new PCV valve, but not sure octane in premium fuel does...

Do you happen to know off the top of your head the cylinder numbering positions?
@EngWam9 жыл бұрын
Cylinder 1 is on the passenger side (American style driving not British) from the back (Near the firewall between the car cabin and the engine compartment) followed by cylinder 2 & 3 in the same row. Cylinder 4 is across from cylinder 1 followed by cylinder 5 and 6

clean instead as maintenance - just did on my other cars (very clogged) and will do my MDX next...

hi did the egr clean and replacement improved the milage or fuel economy of the mdx? currently getting 15L/100km to 16L/100km :(
@EngWam7 жыл бұрын
This would translate roughly to 15.2 mpg. This is really bad. You should be getting 18 mpg (city driving) at least. To answer your question, yes.. bad EGR valve will sure negatively impact your fuel performance.
@skirmich7 жыл бұрын
How can you get 18mpg city at LEAST when the 07 MDX is rated to 17mpg city? The average in Fuelly.com is 17mpg which roughly translates to 15mpg city 20 hwy.

Does the car fuel consumption change after this job?
@EngWam7 жыл бұрын
Yes, Faulty EGR will always negatively impact fuel economy.

Very informative video! I also have a 2007 MDX but no EGR code yet at 98,500 miles. My question is, BEFORE the light came on, did you notice the MDX running any different?..if so, what were the symptoms? Also, at what mileage/kilometers did the light come on?
@EngWam5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The car was not running any different at the time. Once the EGR code came on and fixed it immediately so I did not drive it long enough to notice any significant difference. If my memory serves, I believe the car was at 70K plus at the time. Best of luck to you. Your MDX still has a lot of life into it if it kept well maintained.

My 07 stalled on me. Then I had to keep up the rpm when I stop (stop lights).

it's a good maintenance thing to do before you get an error code, and you can clean the original parts (valve is $200 right now, so only replace the rubber gasket) so very low cost. I just did this on daughter's used Prius (2014 @156k miles) and the EGR valve+mini cooler and intake manifold ports were very clogged up (no error yet, feels smoother for sure, waiting to see on mpg), and plan on doing this on my 2017 MDX @115k as well. Also recommend changing the PCV valve so you don't get a blown head gasket (cheap $5-8 for Prius, $20-40 for Acura) and install an oil catch can (which I did on prius) while you in there. MDX is much easier to do OCC later as it's right on top...
@29sigus7 жыл бұрын
I've no code but the mileage is always between 12 or 13 mpg if I change just the EGR valve will make a difference knowing that I change the o2 sensor but still thanks
@EngWam7 жыл бұрын
If you have no code (and you are sure of that) then EGR is not your problem. Your MPG is too low for this car, it should be around 18-18.5 city driving if the car is properly maintained and tuned. There are so many factors impact the fuel economy including tire pressure, driving habits, clean fuel injectors, and the list goes on and on. I would try to find a good mechanic who knows what he is doing and have him take a look at the car before I start throwing parts at it. For a start, stop by Costco or any auto parts store and grab a case of Chevron fuel injectors cleaner. Add an entire can before filling your tank (don't pour it in a full tank, add it to an empty tank and then fill up with gas). Do this for 6-10 consecutive fills and take a note of the impact on MPG. Also make sure your tires are at specified pressure of the tires themselves. The sticker says 32PSI but some tires requires more (I am sure you have already replaced the factory tires at least once). Best of luck to you

I changed my spark plugs and it improved my mpg by 10% so that's also worth a shot.
