Thanks for a no nonsense straight to the mother f-ing point video without all the worthless banter and nonsense found in other videos! It's bad enough having to work on this compact engine bay, and I'm already pissed off, frustrated and impatient and then having to listen and sort through videos for actual content. I wish all videos were like yours, thank you much kind sir! Lol

This is exactly the noise my 06 RL is making with less than 25,000 miles on the timing belt replacement. I bet the shop didn't replace the tensioner. Here I though tit was the valves making the noise. I hope I can get this to the shop before it slips the timing. Thank you for this!!

I have an 06 TL. 1st owner had timing belt service at Acura around 110k miles. I’m the 2nd owner (had 3 yrs), and the terrible LOUD knocking noise started around 215k miles in July 2019. At first start up, it had a loud knocking noise that eased away after about 10min warming up every time. I researched forums & KZfaq (this video included!)...& narrowed it down to the belt tensior. Went to mechanic shop & he thought it was the lifters and oil type used causing the noise. I had him do just the timing belt kit replacement for about $300 Labor. I provided my own parts, $200. (Dealership would’ve charged $1200+ Labor&Parts). I also switched from 10w/30 to 5w/20 oil. Car drives almost perfect (faster/no knocking) at 217k+ now!🙌🏾 I love my ‘98 Accord & ‘06 TL cars. Last long with minimal problems.

2005 Acura MDX and had exact thing happen to me. Side note all, I highly recommend when you have your timing belt kit installed you have a dealer that is part of the "partner network" or other large similar networks. These parts even brand new can fail. I had my timing belt tensioner go out 13K miles. My mechanic was part of the partner network and both the part and the labor were covered in his case for 2 years 24K mileage. Win win for both of us as I may have had to pay the labor all over again to get to the timing area. For simple repairs you own DIY or a cheaper mechanic may be your way to go but for major repairs make sure they are part of one of these networks.

The older style spring operated tensioners almost never go bad. I had a hydraulic tensioner fail on a K24A that ended up bending 3 valves and breaking a timing chain. I've seen a Koyo spring operated tensioner on a Honda D16 go over 200k and was still smooth when i replaced it.

My 2008 Type-S just started doing this a few days ago. I added oil, thinking it was a knock inside the motor. I’m going to look into it more to see if it’s coming from the side like you say. I do have a question though.. If this is the cause of the knocking noise, how long could this particular car run/drive with it in this condition before something worse happens? Or, will it just continue making the noise for however long until the parts are replaced? I ask because I’m not sure when I’ll have time to take it to a shop, but I still need to get to work and stuff. 🫤 Any advice would help. Thanks!

I just have to say thank you for the video. I live in Pennsylvania and since it started to get cold this noise has been getting worse. The noise was very slight two weeks ago then went on a thanksgiving road trip to NC and since then it has gotten worse which led me here. I have no power loss in the engine it the noise is pretty constant. When standing at the passenger side fender looking at the engine I could tell the noise was on the left side(firewall side) of the engine down towards the bottom. Now my problem is I purchased my 08 TL about 10 months ago and the previous owner left a box in the trunk with the old timing belt and water pump so I assume he had that replaced and the kit was a dayco kit with hydraulic tensioner. So I think my tensioner has taken a poop and time to replace. How hard is it to just get to the tensioner to remove? I am pretty handy and I have the skill set to swap an engine(I had to do one on my 92 integra) plus I do all of my own maintenance. Any tips you have. :D
@glasser2819

people who swear by Aisin made in Japan say that Gates & Dayco water pump are bad news. Most likely, you have to remove the harmonic balancer from the crankshaft pulley to remove the bottom cover 😳 Some people simply cut an "access hole" in the cover... sounds like a nice shortcut!

Usually if you have gotten your timing belt and waterpump done this is usually discovered in the process, and replaced. Think its standard to replace it at that time no matter what. At your mileage You probably are ready for your second timing belt change. There is a chance that whoever did your timing belt and waterpump the first time didn't know to replace it and left the original on. Usually happens more in a garage setting than at a professional car place like the dealership or such.

I had that noice a year ago. Two mechanics couldn’t figure out the problem. I had a misfire cylinder 5 a year ago too replacing the spark plug fixed the issue then… now again misfire in cylinder 5 dealership said spark plugs are ok, coils but and injector had to be replaced. I did it and also timing belt and tensioner but they said water pump was ok so no need to replace. Now light of the check in is on again…. They said valves need to be replaced the sound of the valves to me is kind similar to the sound of the belt in your video. I had too admite car sound better less taping noice than before… also they said a injectors cleaning should be done… car has been owned by me since 110,000 now is 171,000 I keep driving I have spend at the moment a good amount of money.. so I am just holding a few weeks and decide what’s the best to do. I took the car 3 hours away and came back with no issue. Derek Merryman honestly I don't recall ever doing one on a 3.5 L but it is a very similar set up so yes I could definitely see the same thing happening. Could need a valve adjustment. Honda's and Acura's need them from time to time unlike other brands like Toyota. If they don't get them every 100k then they have an idle knock. Heard people even say you should get one every 30k but I'm not sure on that. That should solve your idle knock unless your using the wrong gas like regular unleaded if your engine is rated for 93 octane which has a higher compression ratio.

will replacing the hydraulic cylinder only get rid of the knocking/rattling noise?

Yes, however depending on how long it's been hammering on the tensioner pulley it certainly a good idea to replace that as well. For my experience though once one of these tensioners goes bad, you're really best off just doing the whole timing kit once you're in there. To avoid problems in the future.

I have a knocking noise coming from my engine but it seems to get louder as the RPM's increase, it doesn't go away as you commented in your video. The engine has 130K miles on it and I had the timing belt and water pump replaced at 100K miles but they did not replace the tensioner. Since the noise doesn't go away as the RPM's increase, do you think it could still be the tensioner or a rod? My mechanic thinks it's something inside the engine, but I don't know now after seeing this video. I've driven at freeway speeds (70-80+ mph) for long distances (150+ miles) with it knocking so if it is a rod I figured it would have blown by now at those speeds.

I've seen Rod knocks go for 20,000 miles and more. I've never seen a rod knock in a Honda 3.2L...
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
It's more than likely the tensioner especially since they didn't replace it. The fact that they didn't replace it boggles my mind though. Why didn't they? This is a very common problem with these Hondas. In either case it's very easy to check by sticking a stethoscope on the back of the tensioner from the bottom or even just a long screwdriver. That would be the first thing to check. Very easy pinpoint test. Let me know where you end up finding out, I'm curious. This could be the first Honda 3.2 l i see with a rod knock
@epodewell
@epodewell 4 жыл бұрын
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow Not sure why they didn't replace it, maybe didn't realize there are issues with it and it looked ok when they replaced the belt. Btw, it's a '07 Acura TL 3.2L (Honda engine). I'm curious if they can replace the tensioner without having to take everything apart again as if they were replacing the belt. I don't need a new belt, since it was just replaced 30K miles ago and I'm not particularly interested in paying $1000+ for the same repair again.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
@@epodewell you do still have to take quite a bit apart to replace the tensioner, but it's definitely considerably less work.
