With Johnston's Army of Northern Virginia having successfully withdrawn up the Virginia Peninsula and now occupying defensive positions outside Richmond, Major General McClellan turns to the Union Navy to possibly bring a swift end to the campaign, and maybe even the war. He orders a Union Navy flotilla under Commander John Rodgers to steam up the James River and "blast Richmond into submission." However, as Rodgers' flotilla makes their way up the river, they encounter heavy resistance by Confederate troops and marines, who make a bold stand against the Federal flotilla from their defensive positions on Drewry's Bluff, located 15 miles south of Richmond. If the Rebel defenders of Drewry's Bluff can withstand this formidable Federal flotilla, which includes the USS Monitor and two other ironclad warships, they might be able to save the city and the Confederate war effort.

So many of the smaller battles and skirmishes are simply not covered in the history books. This channel helps tie together the big battles and understand why they turned out the way they did.

Excellent over view of the battle - learned more about the battle than when I lived in Richmond for a year. I visited Drewery’s bluff at least 30 times - usually being the only one there - my dogs loved running all around the fort and rough housing with each other. Great view of the James River - easy to see how you could bottle it up and stop advancement up the river to Richmond from the bluff.

I live near Drewery's Bluff and it is a very well preserved spot, considering how obscure, yet critical this battle was. Thank you to the National Park Service for saving this from development. There were quite a few pictures of the fort/bluff, river with obstructions and surrounding area you posted which I had never seen before so excellent job on that. Great presentation capturing the background and importance of one of our best kept little secrets around here (there's only about 6 parking spots!).

This action was such a long-shot using such a tiny force (only a single ship could even target the fort); and yet it ALMOST made it all the way to Richmond. I would think this 'should' illustrate how perilous the position was for the rebellious states for (almost) the entire war.

it was really precious, confederates losing in the west and retreating in the east with a strong naval force approaching their own capital. The confederates thought things were almost up.

Ironically enough, I was there not too long ago. During the battle, only the River defenses were completed. However, after the battle, the defenses from the land side were completed, resulting in a large fortress that was extremely difficult to assault. In fact, it was so difficult that the union never made any attempts to take it during the war. As a result, the fortress has remained in fairly good condition and has numerous, recognizable features. During the war, it served as the Confederate Navy’s main training ground for their marines as well as naval gunnery, which ended up making the site a place frequented by the local civilian population in Richmond to watch the troops at the adjacent barracks train.

If you have ghost story, then tell it. I was up in Gettsyburg in '08 for the 145th.reenactment. And a few days before the first day l happened to be at Devils Den early in the morning. I could feel eyes watching me,but not a living person around. And even walking up on Little Round Top, the same feeling. I was in my Confederate get-up. Maybe the dead yankees didn't appreciate me being on their soil. It was an eerie feeling though.

Galena's sides were protected by wrought iron plates 2.5 inches (64 mm) thick, backed by 1.5 inches (38 mm) of india rubber and the 18-inch (457 mm) side of the hull. While under construction, the armor scheme was modified. The rubber backing was replaced by an additional 5⁄8 inch (16 mm) of iron.
