There's a certain cutesy kind of vulnerable persona that drew a strong female audience back then. Fallon blew up on SNL from that too. It was never about being the funniest for that archetype. Someone below notes that Pete Davidson was the most recent example.

You're right but I think it was a common phrase to describe "A comedian's appearance on a network TV talk show and perform a standup set".

-"Getting a lot of attention as a writer and perfomer on SNL THIS YEAR", I understood that part as 'he was already writing for it, but had not yet performed on it, though he was recently announced to actually perform onto the show'.- EDIT: Adam's debut onscreen at SNL was in february of '91, so I'm definitely wrong, but so was David. The text on his teleprompter was just plain BAD, and so was his pronounciation of it. The text he had to say was written in such a way that he had to say that Adam got a lot of recognition as a writer ánd performer on SNL, and that he had his debut on national television this year. But tonight, he makes his debut on David's show. I think that should be it. Dave just flubs it at the way he says "This year".

He was hired as a writer first then became a featured player, then main cast So he was a writer at the time

I can’t stand him because he’s always smiling even when he shouldn’t be like he thinks he’s hilarious. He’s not.

Adam ain’t funny? Hmmm...I'd say his $420M net worth means he is funny to somebody! I am not a huge Adam Sandler fan. I do like some of his films (and I like his dramatic stuff), but the guy is funny in his own way that has connected with millions of people around the world (which also makes him talented).

@Scott Burness nope, just my opinion. Didn't laugh. Now compare that to a Steve Martin sketch 10 years earlier and just one motion and I was rolling on the floor. That's comic genius. He was the king of comedy.

Back in 80s and earlier, they genuinely bumped guests all the time as these shows were far less scripted and often they ran long.
