Milwaukee 3/8in (10mm) Ratchet & Socket set: amzn.to/2Cwgxck
Adam gripes about something everyone who's worked with sockets can relate to: having an incomplete set because the cases they're stored in aren't any good. That's why he's a fan of Milwaukee's ratchet and socket sets, which are stored in a robust and thoughtfully designed carrying case. What are tools you own that have great storage cases?

@@srwapo those are simply house brands they attach their names to. There's factories out there that'll make tools and put any label you want on them. I'll say it again, Harbor Freight does not make any tools. They have tools made for them. That's it. You could go to those same factories and have the same tools made with your name on them. Wang Hung Lo who runs the shop floor don't care!

I just ordered the Packout version (48-22-9486), It's basically both sets combined in a Packout box. All the same features like lift out trays, but in an even better box. I also like that it is divided into color coded trays by SAE vs Metric instead of 1/4 vs 3/8.

I have a Craftsman mechanics set that my father purchased me ten years ago. On the face of it, it’s a well designed blow molded case however I have had a few people open it upside down not realizing there is a right way to open it and all of the 3/8s sockets fall out (the 1/4 sockets are in the lockable part). It’s simultaneously great and frustrating. I have eyed those Milwaukee sets to go with my m18 and m12 tools but the craftsman haven’t failed me (while maybe not the best quality it’s still very good). On the subject of ratchets; my father who over the years as an engineer and mechanic, has one Snap On tool (a 3/8s ratchet) tool it’s also one of his oldest from 1970. It’s still the smoothest and most satisfying to use compared to the others.

I just wrapped up a 20yr diesel mechanic career. While I invested in SnapOn torque wrenches, air tools, and a few other specialty tools, the majority of my hand tools are 25yr old Craftsman, and they've survived quite well, in spite of what the $30K SnapOn box owners said... Split a few chrome sockets over the years, but often because i used them on air tools... No complaints, except that now Sears dying off makes replacement difficult now. A shame...

they are squared (or faceted) to allow you to use a crescent or standard wrench on them. That's the main reason. Not rolling as much is just an added benifit.

I still have my blow molded case from my first Craftsman set I purchased in 2000. I broke it apart at the hinge and it fits pretty perfectly in my 3 tier Craftsman toolbox drawer. For my router, the big DeWalt kit that comes with 3 bases, the case is massive... absolutely humongous. Its easily double the size that Savage pulled out. But, I love having the options provided. Plunge base vs fixed base is definitely going to have its place depending on the project.

I usually like to live under the motto “buy once, cry once”. So when I was in the market for a socket set I looked around at quite a few before finding these Milwaukee sockets in a pack out. It had both the 1/4 and 3/8 in the set and I was fortunate at the time to grab it during a sale which saved me almost $100 on the set. One of the best investments I have made though. Love these sockets.

I have a Milwaukee router and have to say I'm very impressed with its case as well. Has room for the router, the plunge base, and bits and other router accessories. It's frustrating that other tool brands don't follow suit with giving a good way to store and transport tools like Milwaukee does with a number of their products especially when you factor in the Packout system.

I gotta say, milwaukee has the most tools that I’ve bought and when I pick that tool up again, knowing I’ve paid a lot, and getting to use the tool, I feel a simple joy in the quality and it just makes me feel good when I use a tool that just does what I want it to without complaining. One of my favorite Milwaukee tools is actually, the m18 Block Rover Light. Never have I gotten that tool, not had a unique and perfect place to set it on for ideal lighting, and it give my eyes a rest. It’s a tool I’ve never complained about and it’s such a sweet relief

One thing not mentioned about the socket sets is that, if you do remove the tray to store the sockets elsewhere, the case itself is now a great multi-purpose storage box. It's an ideal size for artist supplies like paints and sketch materials or random loose things like sandpaper that don't necessarily need a more elegant storage solution.

I bought metric and sae sets. They came in and I had this exact same reaction to the cases lol. Ratchets themselves are also really nice. 4 degree, says “on/off” for direction selector, low profile, single piece handle/head, comfortable grip. Just overall well designed and reasonably price for what you get.

Those cases are amazing! My Sunex impact sockets come in a fairly decent case. It is blow molded, but not terribly bulky, and the sockets don't snap in, but set in nicely. That, and they're generous with their sizes. 1/2 drive sae goes to 1 1/2", and metric goes to 30mm. Not bad for a budget tool.
