Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Wire Storage Solution!

3 жыл бұрын

Adam tackles a shop shelf build that he's been putting off for a long time--finally reorganizing his loose wire storage that sits above his Sortimo hardware boxes. It's a chance for him to implement his philosophy for a storage system that houses and dispenses rolls of wire--that doesn't mount the spools along a dowel. As you'll see, it's a solution that's as elegant as it is satisfying!

Thanks for the kind words about the Detroit Fox! For years (decades) until my recent retirement, I was the chief engineer at The Fox, and quite proud of the work we did to restore and maintain the country's largest "movie palace". When you and Jamie were there, attempts were made to go through channels and offer you a tour of our archaic technology (live-front slate switchboards, huge ventilation fans, air washers, etc.) but it was not to be. Often such offers never make it through the gauntlet of officialdom, and we were too polite to approach either of you directly, as you were obviously busy. Que sera, sera! But if you ever have any questions about the building or its 1928 technology, you have but to ask. Stay safe.

Oh man! The ladder would need to be hinged in the middle so that it could go around the corners of the single track running all the way around the room. That would be fascinating to watch him build since it would test the limited space of the cave.

I think it is a good solution. However, I would cut away the bottom edge of the troughs so that dust can fall through. Otherwise, a lot of dirt will quickly accumulate in it in a well-used workshop.

Since the fronts are clear, and the spools lift out easily, shouldn't be too hard to run the vacuum over the troughs every once in a while. With the open bottoms, the stuff from the top trough will drop to the second, from top two to the third and so on. Think they'll still get dirty.

Adam, you need only two more things to make your wire storage perfect... Attach a self adhesive ruler to the edge of the each shelf. You can buy them preprinted or just make your own with a printer and some clear packing tape. And, attach a set of wire cutters to the holder with a bit of chain, maybe even give them their own little holster on the side
3 жыл бұрын
Love the solution but I think I've got one thing to add (that you may not experience for a while). With the wire tail dispensing holes you absolutely have a nice clean point to grab the wire and pull just what you need however as that spool unwinds the tail's natural position will change from where it uncoils, this will make it more difficult at points in the spools life to dispense wire. Also when you replace the spools with new spools if the thickness of spool is different you may wind up finding that the holes are not in a useful position for a specific spool you shelve. My solution would be to remove the holes but in place leave a slot the entire length of the shelf (or many slots along the length like a dotted line). This way the spools can dispense as needed, you can still have your tidy tails and you don't run across the problem of the holes being misaligned.
@MB-zj3er
@MB-zj3er 8 ай бұрын
I had the same thought. If you could make a bar with eyelets that move back and forth that might even be better, and they could be moved to accommodate different spools as you change them out.

We had a similar set up behind the front desk of electrical shop, where I worked as an apprentice electrician. I don't know if you'd need it. But we had a *1 meter ruler* stuck just above our cabinet, at chest height. To measure the lengths of wire the customer asked for.... Plus we had a thin whiteboard strip under each roll. So when it was replaced. You change the number to whatever amount was on a fresh roll. 10m/25m etc.. And changed it as you cut lengths off for the customers. It's hard to judge what's left on a roll, because of how it's wound. You don't know when you're close to needing a new roll. Just a thought.. Great video as always.

My college radio engineering shop has all the spools of wire we needed on vertical rods and pipes depending on the size all the way up to 2 foot diameter reels. And then one day we got one extra 3 foot spool of heavy coax cable for a rooftop satellite dish (for a Pacifica news feed) with no where to put it. After a week of tripping over that we just said screw this and ran the wire up to the roof even though the dish wasn't getting installed for a month (the dish had to live disassembled in the back hallway). It was satisfying to throw out the empty spool.

After many years of working in electrical supplies I've learned that wire on spools is inherently disobedient. My wire rack at work has everything from 1000 Mcm to 18awg thermostat wire. It will roll off on spindles and be a pain just like Adam said, however, there is a way to get it to cooperate (kind of). When hanging wire on spindles the end comes off of the top or bottom. While it is nice for it to all look the same if two reels hang on one another and roll together you'll have a rats nest, the size of which will hurt your feelings. This is why it is good practice to hang one spool and turn the next so that one end is coming off the top and it's neighbor's end is coming off the bottom. That way if they bind you won't have wire on the floor. The troughs are the way for smaller stuff though, but if you have to have spindles, that's what I suggest.

I love it when he recognizes wire without measuring or reading the spool. That's how experienced he is with his materials.

Also there is a distinct difference in the shape and size of 2 con, multi con, lamp and speaker wires. Everything from standard awg used to type of insulation makes them mostly recognizable to anyone who has used different types of wire/cable for even a short period of time

It's a brilliant solution for wire storage. Might be a good idea to soften the edges of them dispensing holes. Don't want to pull a length of wire and discover you've removed the insulation from half of it; or even just nicked it somewhere you don't see. Holes drilled in polycarb have razor sharp edges.

Love it. I was thinking those shelfs seemed a bit more work then needed until the holes. My tape storage solution was to take two dowels and mount them parallel between two small blocks so the tape can stand on edge, though I got maybe 15 rolls so i don't need a solution. I was thinking of using this solution I made for them for wire spools to, but the trough style with the holes is the new plan.

Here's a tip for spools of wire on a spindle - place them alternating - one unwinds from the top, the next one unwinds from the bottom - this stops the dreaded pull one and all unwind problem...

Biggest issue I think isnt necessarily that it's he has to take off one in the middle (needing the whole spool or replace it) he has to take everything off of it on on side to get it. Yes the whole unwind one the rest follow suit is a huge issue too

Far better design than those reel-on-a-stick style shelves. I've had many a reel fall off on me before, this is a far safer (and more elegant imo) solution!
