Am I getting too old to do music as a full time career? This is a question a lot of music producers, singers, rappers, and other others pursuing the music industry ask themselves on a regular basis. Did I miss the boat? Is it worth it at this stage of my life? The world can be a pretty cold place at times and asking for advice from those who just don't understand your passion for music can really have a negative effect on your self belief and goals, but are they right? In this video I expose the secrets the music industry doesn't want you to know about.

Sure, we worship youth & beauty. But art doesn’t end in your 20’s... or 30’s or 40’s. Reality check= I’m 62, support myself full time performing, just got my first 2 endorsement deals THIS year, currently booking regional tours for NEXT year... BTW, played my first live gig 2 yrs ago. If you are waiting for someone to open doors You are prolly asking the wrong questions anyway. Best advice I got this year (from an A-list musician) = you create your own opportunity. Stop worrying ‘bout what doors are closed and go create some open ones. - peace, Greg Greyson

Greg, THANK YOU brother! I'm 59 and have spent my career as a video editor making TV spots. 2 years ago I got divorced (after 31 years) and went through rehab and what I know is this: Pain is a very effective muse. Over these last couple years I've made music that I FINALLY actually like. I played my first live open stage in Nashville last year. The pandemic has slowed live work down but I was told by a woman who owns 2 clubs that I 'belong' in Nashville. I know I have a strong music product but it's sometimes easy to let the "you're too old" crowd gnaw at your soul. The path to having original music heard, liked and purchased is not clear so we dig around in the online muck looking for a pearl. Thanks for providing one just when I happened to need it!

Raised the bar this year by working with a vocal coach, writing and recording, and adding 4-way vocal harmonies with our band. Beethoven wrote his most incredible music in his late 40s and 50s - music that changed the course of Western music singlehandedly and created legendary pieces we still listen to 200 years later. His entire city turned out for his funeral ceremony. The next generation of composers saw him as a living god. For me, he was the greatest artist that humanity has ever produced. Imagine if he had stopped writing when he hit his 30s. He was just getting started.

The time flown by makes me anxious as I age. I want to perform not only make :( I won't give up no matte what, but I just feel quite depressed sometimes, especially when it hurts. I am a songwriter and I just decided to get even more serious with my career and I've written some of my most creative material this year at 39 and 40 than I've written in my life. I am 46 and started writing jazz last year and everything I have learned over the years I am still putting to use and learning new stuff everyday with all the new tech we have (In my producing and engineering days it was ADAT and 2 inch reels). Running my DAT 2 track masters to Bernie Grundman’s in Hollywood for mastering sessions. Now I am doing all of that on a MacBook and delivering masters via the internet. Fun times baby.

Disabled vet in my 30s. I've always been involved in music since I can remember. I've always just looked at it as a hobby and as an outlet. Gotten to the point where I can't work construction anymore because of injuries accrued in the military. A couple of months ago I sat down with my wife and she brought up that I might start taking my music more serious and pursue it as a career. I've never been happier. Hey man, thanks for this video! I’m 25, 26 this year and always had the fear that I’m too old to get anywhere other than pub singer, I didn’t pick up a guitar until I was 22, and last year I went full time music. Which is great but I always have it on my mind people only get signed when they’re younger such as 18-22 and it feels like I missed that shot. But my songwriting has improved massively and as you said I give myself goosebumps with some of the new stuff being recorded! What I’m trying to say is your video helps a lot! I’m 33 and one thing I got going for me is that I look really young. Nobody ever guesses my age. My thing is I been rapping since I was 11 was real serious about it from age 20-23 and was really good like making good songs good but I got addicted to pills for years. I’m clean now and have been for 5 years and just started getting back into music a year ago but now I’m married with a full time job where I physically work my ass off and like I wanna get really dedicated to the music where I’m writing all the time but so exhausted from work specially in summer cuz don’t have AC in the warehouse. And I get really bummed when I can’t think of any rhymes some days. Like 10 years ago I was coming up with stuff left and right. But now even tho the stuff I write I think is pretty good it’s not as frequent and some of the stuff I do think of is kind of basic.

Great video. I started singing at the age of 7, started singing professionally at 19. But left the music industry when I was 22 because I would always find myself in the hands of exploitative individuals. People would shed tears whenever I sang. I'm now 32 and honestly a little upset for quiting on myself because of other people. But I was too young and was dealing with a lot of trauma from years bullying and emotional abuse. I recently started making music again, and honestly, it feels like I've missed the boat. Basically had to relearn how to sing professionally coz I haven't done it in so long. This video just restored my sense of hope.

At 29 yrs old, i didn't know more than 3 chords. I've learned all I can, studied song writing. I knew I'd get older, so I write for universal subjects and experience that all people have, at all ages. I don't want people to associate my music with an age group. I want to create laughter, tears and goosebumps. This was a good video. I'm going to show them what the point is.

Bruce Willis first major role at 32. Steven Seagal first movie 36 Music is not olympics or classical music where everything is a factor. Do what you love and what you enjoy. Screw others. Music business is very ungrateful and unfair and most of what is on demand is usually is what on MTV. Do you like what is on MTV? It means that most of pop stars don't even write music. These boys bands or pop stars are products based on looks and maybe having ok voice, but yet, there are plenty of ways how to make terrible singer to sound on a record like he is amazing singer. It is investment to make stars out of them and benefit recording companies. These projects like Justin Bieber in music or Conor McGregor in sports are business projects to make more money even by being so so. Just to compare, Conor McGregor has so much money that others who have better fighting records, more victories and title defenses can only dream what Conor has financially. Justin Bieber doesn't write his songs while there are plenty of those who play multiple instruments, write songs and are good singers can't achieve something in music. Is it fair? No. But this is entertainment business, especially big waters of music business. The other example is when Lil Xan got famous so fast and instantly became unknown because of his drug addiction and mental problems. Even banks blocked his banking accounts so he can't buy drugs. Is it a success? Avril Lavigne had success after debut album, but after second and third album there was no success. All songs were written by producers team. Even this opportunities when producers do it for you doesn't guarantee you a good musical career. Some of musicians have side jobs. Just read this article - "17 indie artists on their oddest odd jobs that pay the bills when music doesn't". Do music, do it smart by making a good marketing plan and don't do it as a main job. Selling music on musical platforms like beatport doesn't guarantee good money because depends on the genre and how good track is and still does not mean good track equals big success. Do it step by step. There are plenty of musicians and Dj's who do evaluation of income and if you think the money you make producing music and playing gigs are good, then you made it! Just don't compete. Music is about your experience and what you think and do and want to show. Competitiveness exists between elitists for newbies harder to join music market. There are plenty of known Dj's, but as a producers they don't produce and were exposed for this. Especially Instagram models and those who are from wealthy families. Better have dignity and make your music than pay others (ghost producers) and sell what is not yours and claim that you are a producer

I hate when people say "well aren't you getting a little old?" No, is Dave Grohl too old? Cause as far as I can tell he puts out smash hits every time. There is no boat to miss. People who get married and have kids are too old cause they dont wanna leave home. Anyone can make a career, there's a smaller chance of being a pop star, sure, but the only thing in your way is you if you think age is a factor.

I didn’t really start rapping in front of people until I was almost 25. I’ve been blessed recently to work with a producer who’s produced for some people you would recognize. The point is you’re never too old, don’t get discouraged and don’t make excuses. You can do it if you want it bad enough! I haven’t even made it yet, but every day 6 feet above ground is another opportunity to tell my story.

Now I have a little knowledge about buying beats and studio time things like that. I’m scared to invest a bunch of money and get nowhere but I also love what I do so I’m going to do it at 26 I just notice there is no females out there that rap like me. @@chickoffthechain7949 I’m glad it was encouraging. There is definitely no timetable for this, we all have our own journey. Investing in your music is definitely the right thing to do. It shows people that you are serious. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a whole lot starting out. Get plugged into your local music scene and see what’s going on. If you live in a city where there is no music scene, like I do. You might have to go the next town over and see what’s going on there. My team lives 2 hours away but I make the drive because it’s a bigger city with more opportunities. Also I have a great team that has really pushed me to create better music. Really inspiring Adam! It's never too late to start making music. I took 2 years off school after deciding I didn't want to pursue a business degree anymore. I did a lot of growing up during this time and discovered my love for music and everything about it. Finally went back to school at 25 to pursue a degree in music and haven't looked back since! 6 months ago I started making my own original music and I've never been happier or so driven in my entire life! That's how I knew this was the right move for me. The way I look at it is if I can make music on the side while going to school full time and working 30+ hours/week as a cook, there isn't a time in my life where I can't make music! For now I'm gonna finish up my bachelors degree, find a career in music to make some money and continue making the music I truly love and enjoy as a hobby. 🙏

I've used Cool Edit since when it was a 2 track wave editor, the most powerful audio editor ever made. It is still the engine behind Adobe Audition since they bought it, and I still use it for mastering.

Thank you for this post! The music I'm creating today is not even comparable to what I was doing 20 years ago. I believe in myself and have stopped getting in my way. Never too old to create and find a way to connect with people through art!

What age has to do with a great Product. Lol

Age has a lot to do with "product". Who wants a three year old Twinkie? But age has nothing to do with "ART".Once you start considering anything a product a cesspool of crap will be associated with it. That's the dysfunction and confusion the music industry has placed on people who buy into that crap.

At 48 years of Age and after a great career as hip hop and RnB deejay both in clubs and on radio in the UK. I have embarked on a career as music producer in mot just hip hop and RnB but in house music and also have started a Mixcloud page and KZfaq channel and people including my old family have told me about my age and almost willing me to forget my ambitions and goals in this phase of my career telling me only a few people make it . I am determined to be living proof that a Guy from birmingham, UK can make it onto the global stage of music and be successful. Your words are inspired, keep up your good work !!
