Nice demo Dave. On a side note I noticed the sound of your voice from the raw or dry channel was fine. But when you brought up the effects or wet channels and added them to the mix it produced a little bit of phase cancellation. Notice how your voice sounded less full when adding the effect and the raw together. That is caused by the two audio sources, the raw and effect being slightly out of phase to each other. Most likely due to the design or settings of the effect unit. If this were an undesirable result, I suggest making sure the MIX control on the effect unit is set to 100% effect. However this may not be an issue if the audible result is acceptable. I believe you have done a tutorial on the application of on board effects and may have mentioned the use of the effect's MIX control for different scenarios and audible effect results. Keep up the great work.

This is a great callout and I really appreciate you sharing this comment with the community. I will pin this for anyone that decides to use this method. My video here was specifically about the connections, but the example does call out the latency added by outboard gear which I mention in a video about a similar setup using a DAW and connecting across USB.

This problem of phase come because when you make an insert on a channel like in the first example, you must get out the channel of the stéréo bus. In your example, you listen the original track + your voice with the FX in your aux 1. In this case, you must use your Aux1 track like your news voice channel. If you want to mix your original signal with a paralel fx, you must insert it on a bus and use it like the internal fx of the consol.

Your video was very helptful. I want to buy a X32 for my studio. But the usage of my external Effects was not clear. Now I'm shure how to do it. Thank you very much.

YeH, the external FX can be done, but do test for potential latency. It should be bad since you (most likely) have hardware, but just check before you hit that record button.

@@AllamHouse Latency ist the major hustle in digital. That is the reason I stayed analog as long as possible. But now it is time to say goodby to my old analog console and my old multrack taperecorder. I think it is possible to compensate the latency in DAW after recording. I would record the effect return on a seperate track in DAW. And most of my external effects are Inserts. so phasing by latency would be no problem. But thank you for your advice.

Nice info Dave, I love the effects and flexibility of the board. Sometimes more than the daw. I finally figured out how to use the effects on the board and route them to the Daw. And vise versa. And as crude as it sounds, One day I will implement a small 8-16 track reel setup to everything. But my question is.... Seeing that since the X-32 is actually acting as the sound card... Is there anyway to bounce or route the final 2 track mix back into the daw? Thanks.....😀

Yes, as long as you do not need to multitrack 32 tracks in addition to these other goals. My current setup usually only uses 24-26 inputs so I also send my house mix and my livestream mix into my DAW to be recorded. It’s a rather standard setup using the User Output section within Routing.

Hey Dave, again a big thank as allways for ur videos. i have a doubt. I can only use ONE insert plug-in in to my main. I.e. if i wanna use Limiter and GEQ on my Main LR bus is there a wyy o do it? thanks in advance. Priyan

Many people try to get by using the Channel Strip EQ and Compressor on the mains and then add the limiter if you need that tool, but ai do understand the potential of needing the graphic EQ for fine tuning. The best way to do this for the mains is to use a Matrix. You would apply the graphic EQ to your main and then send that (Post Fader) to a Matrix Pair. On the Matrix you can apply the limiter and then route that out to your desired outputs in Routing > Out as Post Fader.
