@Bob K I've always loved it too! I'm a Shakespeare nerd & it has always reminded me of what Juliet said when Romeo swore by the moon that he loved her... "Oh, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon that monthly changes in her circled orb, lest that thy love prove likewise variable." Bowie's one, very poetic line always makes that quote pop into my head. Kinda have a thing for all things lunar.🌛

I guess I assumed Nile Rogers played the rhythm parts but many have attested it's SRV (and he was a Strat man). I'm a fan of them both, anyways! It's kinda odd to hear SRV so tempo disciplined LOL.

From folk, glam, "white plastic soul", minimalism, Krautrock, New Wave, pop, electronic music, and whatever else Bowie was in the mood to explore, this man's work will always be an inspiration in sound & vision to the end of our days. What an absolute madman genius he was, f*****g hell.

Are you sure about that? It seemed to me that Bowie played the guitar in the video and on the record. I will check. Bowie is an excellent guitar player also.

@@Rhiannon011 Yeah about that... There was some background drama. Not Necessarily with that, but behind the scenes between Bowie and SRV with them touring. It caused SRV to break out on his own though. So, that's a good thing.

Stevie Ray Vaughan It's strange when you realize one of your favorite recording artists sessioned on the hit album of another one of your favorite acts back in the day. And for some, it might be a surprise to learn that the late blues giant Stevie Ray Vaughan served as the lead guitarist on David Bowie's 1983 smash LP Let's Dance.

"He didn't just get drunk for that part." Honestly, I wouldn't put it past him. When he recorded Heroes, he set the mic further and further away for each subsequent verse until he had to literally shout for it to pick up his voice. This was just so that he could ramp up the intensity as the song went on. He was a mad genius.

When the first notes for Modern Love rang out during the Reality tour, a bunch of us in the crowd went crazy and Bowie paused and said, “Oh, my Eighties Babies,”. 🥰 This was in Indianapolis, but he had the same reaction in the concert video 😆

Ha! I knew it wouldn't take long for someone to point out SRV on guitar! Good job. Although Bowie actually played guitar, I wasn't a fan of the director having him mimic the lead in that video. Still, Bowie and SRV were generational talents!

@@kevincarpenter8194 - Yeah, I think I read in one of his biographies that Stevie was pissed off by that as well. Bowie wanted him to go on a tour with him, but Stevie didn’t want to abandon his buddies in Double Trouble.

Bowies voice has a natural vibrato. Some one did a video about his voice and found that bowies singing is impossible to auto tune because of his natural vibrato.

That's what made Bowie next level. Never shied away from sharing the stage and brought in the right people for the job. He just knew. Rodgers' touches on this are choice.

This is one of my favorite Bowie tracks! But you’ve got to listen to “Cat People.” (A.k.a. “putting out the fire with gasoline.”) from the same album. Trust me.

That deep smooth voice at first, and then...with gasoliiiinnnne!!!♥️🔥 And instead of connecting it to that horrible Cat People movie, I love to think of it instead connected to Inglourious Basterds and “Shoshana’s Revenge.”

SRV has such a distinct guitar sound. Bowie worked with a lot of artists and has so many great songs, all the way up to his final, dark album, Blackstar.

Yes, before anyone knew who SRV was. David Bowie saw SRV at Montreaux in '82 and was blown away. He hired SRV for the "Let's Dance" album, which was Bowie's greatest commercial success.

Stevie Ray was very pissed off when Bowie mimed the guitar in the video for this song. Parted company with Bowie on bad terms just before the Let’s Dance world tour.

The rumour was Stevie was in talks to play in the tour, but he showed up strung out on coke with a stoned entourage and Bowie decided that wasn't going to work for him. I remember watching an interview with Stevie and he said the offered pay sucked and he turned it down.

Lex, I love how you respond to guitar. Even when it's just a little bit in a song like this, you'll catch it and know it was someone great. In this case it was a very Young Stevie Ray Vaughan before his Texas Flood album. Stevie was boo'd off the stage in Montreux in 1982. Bowie was there and recognized his skill and asked him to be on the Let's Dance album where he played guitar on Let's Dance and China Girl. Jackson Browne was there and offered to record Stevie in his home studio in California. This became Texas Flood and the launch of Stevie's rise to fame.

This was a massive tune when it dropped and the video was wonderfully sideways but totally worked. The whole album's great. Every part on this track is working at 100% - vocals, drums, guitar, horns, keys, bass. So much punch!

Bowie's sound was always different - but always relevant. For 45 years he managed to capture the exact flavor of that specific moment in time. He was always current, literally up to the moment of death. The beauty is that each album can take you back to that moment in history. I think "Changes", "Young Americans", or "China Girl" would be the next place to go - but I really encourage you to check out "Lazarus".

You should do “China girl” and “Cat people” from this same album. Bowie was a musical force of nature. He was able to always stay current with what was going on, yet do his own thing. He was able to change up and grow stylistically and it never felt unauthentic. The man was a true artist.

SRV on guitar. "Legato" In music performance and notation, legato indicates that musical notes are played or sung smoothly and connected. That is, the player makes a transition from note to note with no intervening silence. Yes Bowie had a huge hit for this song and album, SRV was great on it. For some more Bowie with great songs and killer guitar from Mick Ronson, try his time with the Spiders from Mars, do Ziggy Stardust, Moonage Daydream, Suffragate City and their epic, Width of a Circle. David Bowe was one of the first white Artists thanks to songs like this to get played on R&B Radio stations and there's a clip of him on KZfaq asking MTV why there not playing any Black Artists he really was a forward thinking artist not only for his own music but for other Genre's too R.I.P David Bowe AKA The Thin White Duke

If you guys get a chance watch the documentary “five years”. It’s a pretty good chunk of David Bowie‘s career. It shows that David Bowie knew what the song was gonna sound like before he ever put a note on paper. He drove the back up singers crazy for his album Young Americans👍 he worked with a famous name singer on that album too that wasn’t famous yet!

I'm pretty sure that there's a longer version of this that has even more SRV guitar greatness in it, mostly at the end. I didn't realize it was him when I first heard this song all those years ago, but now I can't not hear it. He had such a distinctive sound.

The album version is longer with an extended solo. The intro is also longer. I bought the album on vinyl and was blown away by the longer version.

Srv supported bowie on tour coz bowie loved him. Hence he plays the solo on it. The style of singing is called Bowie. That's just the genius at work. Great song, great reaction. This album came out my freshman year of college. This song, plus Modern Love and China Girl will always make me feel like I’m back in my dorm room looking at my David Bowie poster and dancing around like a fool. 🕺🏻

The guy on the guitar through the main part of the song was Nile Rogers, the guitarist from Chic and basically took Bowie's song idea for a more melancholic demo version into this dance hit. The guy doing the solo is Stevie Ray Vaughan - One of the greatest guitarists to ever walk the Earth.

The best way to understand and appreciate Bowie is to think of him as solo artist version of Queen.

Meh. They can both be called glam rock but Bowie was so much more than that. He was always unique and of the times throughout his career. Whether it was psychedelic folk in the 60s or industrial influenced rock in the 90s. Even the album he recorded on his death bed was pushing the envelope of popular music.

Bowie was the first punk. He was the first glitter rock. He was the first techno rock. He created musical hybrids that no one has yet to emulate. His level of musical genius goes beyond the mere title of rock star. He was a super nova. And he fell to Earth. And we were lucky to have him.

@@ingobordewick6480 HEY MAN! Saw Tool in 2006 (Calgary, 10,000 Days Tour) and again in 2017 in Vancouver. When the lockdown BS hit us in 2020, I actually had a ticket to see them again in June, but it was cancelled :( I am glad to have seen them twice, it's the closest thing to a spiritual experience I will ever have. Tool has been my favourite band since about 1996, when I first heard the song "Opiate" (on LSD in the Northern Canadian wilderness, it was surreal). Tool is my favourite band too.

Bowie's music can be the equivalent of musical whiplash in some sense and it always still manages to sound like Bowie-it is a vibe. For a real hard left from what you've reacted to so far, have a listen to the title track from 1976's "Station to Station" album (from his Thin White Duke era) or "LIttle Wonder" from 1997's "Earthling." Eccentric and fascinating tunes like so many others in his catalogue, enjoy!

Always loved the way Ian McCulloch drops lyrics from famous songs into extended live Echo & The Bunnymen songs. At a gig in Southend in 1984 he dropped in the wonderful "Under the blankets / The serious blankets".

Actually that is called slurring on the guitar. The genius of David Bowie. I had the same reaction as Lex. Who is that guitar player? Then I heard the first Stevie Ray Vaughan tune on the radio. "Hey, it's that guy on the David Bowie tune!"

I've seen a fair few Bowie interviews, the eccentricity was combined with great intellect, and he would be so modest with it, that it would make us question if he was what normal supposed to look like, and everybody else was the deviant. Many people took comfort from Bowie's non-conformism as a positive influence, especially if they were struggling with their own.

In this episode of Brad & Lex, Let's dance!!! Lets "sway!" Brad has that covered like insurance, he explains before performing his signature "side to side sway" as no one else can to Bowie's band. Lex gets into some enthusiastic "clutch" and "frontal" "bops" before the record ends leading to a convo that trails off into the nothing.

At the time this song was released I loved it. I was an 18 year old college freshman. The only other song I knew by him to that point was Fame which had been a big R&B hit for him years earlier. I still like the song but it hasn’t held up as well as other tracks on the album.

David Bowie had many different bands and he always hired great musicians. Title song to the album of the same name. His commercial peak. Saw him on the "Serious Moonlight" tour and he was amazing!

bowie helped SRV's career by inviting him to montreux festival as the first artist to perform without a record contract p.s monteux also the site of smoke on the water

Bowie did not invite SRV to the Montreux Festival. Legendary producer Jerry Wexler called Claude Nobs, the festival's organizer, and told him he had to book this unknown guitar player for the blues night of the festival, July 17, 1982. Bowie called Vaughan the following November while he and the band were recording their first album in Jackson Browne's studio to recruit him to play on the Let's Dance album. In January his guitar work was recorded and used on 6 of the 8 tracks on Bowie's album. Bowie wanted him to play on the upcoming Serious Moonlight tour in support of the album, but after initially agreeing, Stevie changed his mind to finish up his band's debut album and hit the road to promote it.

Make no mistake, the guitar riff is Nile Rodgers Nile Rodgers is responsible for this funky riff. You will recognise his distinctive guitar playing sounds from: Get Lucky by Daft Punk, I Coming Out by Dana Ross which you might know from being sampled on Notorious BIG's Mo Money Mo Problems track, also Lady by Modjo which is a sample of Soup For One by Chic/Nile Rodgers and also, you might know his guitar from being on Rappers Delight because thats Nile playing.. its sampled from Chic's 'Good Times.' You may also have heard his guitar work on all most of Sister Sledges work as he wrote and produced all the music for them. "We Are Family, I got all my sisters with me." Once you know Nile Rodgers 🎸 guitar, you'll recognise his music in Hip Hop, Disco, New Wave... Oh and bonus track... Notorious BIG "Notorious" thats a sample of Duran Duran which gues who was playing guitar? Yes, Nile Rodgers!! His most recently famous thing was playing with Daft Punk on Get Lucky. He's in the music video. Black dude with dreads. He's a legend of pop music. Oh yeah and Stevie Ray Vaughan played on the solo of Lets Dance.

Bowie was very adept at picking very talented people to work with. He had said that the easiest way to change up your sound was to change the people you worked with. SRV on guitar here, but over Bowie's career there were many others as well, not forgetting how many other's careers he revived (or inspired). Don't be surprised if the next Bowie song you hear sounds NOTHING like this, just sayin'!

When Lex says “whoever was playing guitar was killing it” i’m pretty sure she’s not referring to the 10 second SRV solo at the end, she means NILE ROGERS who performed the main guitars, and wrote the music for this song.
