Hi, I’m Preston. When I was 12 years old I remember gathering the All-Star team together before a big game and giving them a pep talk. When I played high school sports I was more of a hype man than a competitive athlete. I pretended to be the mayor in most situations, trying to get in good favor with everyone. On one hand, the ability to connect with people can be attributed to the fact that I’m an extreme extrovert. On the other hand, and It took me a long time to see it, you could also attribute it to an immense desire to be liked and people please everyone around me!
As far as addiction is concerned, I found it difficult to accept the fact that I was a drug addict and alcoholic. “What do you mean you think I might have a problem? I’m just doing what everyone else is doing. I show up to work everyday, I pay my own bills, and I’m never sloppy or the one causing trouble. I really think I’m just unlucky.” If it wasn’t for four arrests in three years, I might still be fighting a battle today. My sobriety date is September 10, 2001, one month after my 21st birthday. Today my entire life revolves around being an advocate for counseling, therapy and support groups like AA, NA, Alanon, ACA and NAMI. I outreach for a mental health and addiction hospital, I host a podcast called The High Cost of Anonymity and am a speaker, trainer and a coach. I think the solution to normalizing mental health and addiction is by making coaching, counseling and other mental health and addiction supports as common as going to the gym, hiring a personal trainer or going to a group fitness class.
I would love to connect with you. You can find me on Instagram @kprestonmoore.

Thank you for this. I am 2 and a half years sober and I agree, this is just the beginning. I feel like I have barely scratched the surface. So grateful though and your talk was incredible. Thank you for sharing.

I really enjoyed listening to this... So honest and forward with yourself. That's honestly as mature as you can possibly me and I've been giving myself a lot of thought about myself not feeling right... Finding ways to cope especially during times like this. Am a meth addict, am working and paying bills but it's becoming really hard to manage emotions (yeah I know this shit is terrible)

5 days sober after a lapse. Stopping everything else was easy, it was the socially acceptable drug that brought me to my knees. Can't believe society uses the term "drugs and alcohol" it would be funny if it wasn't so frightening.

You got me thinking. But don't forget that all societies are "build" on substance use (not abuse). The legislation would be a step forward imho.

Preston-why didn't you just say the white powder was cocaine you did in the bathroom at school.

Maybe it was meth or some other white powder substance.
