In this video we add an external option to a B and K 100Mhz frequency counter. The internal clock on this frequency counter had a lot to be desired. So we add a jack to the back and tap in to the signal so we can tighten up the measurement quite A bit using the Rb time base in the lab.
** Repair exposes the Tech to mains electric and should only be done by trained personnel. Errors can be fatal. **

I did this same modification to my Leader 3216 signal generator. The internal crystal was pretty unstable. And.... basically everything in my lab runs of my GPSDO now.

Although I also tend to "just measure" a clock signal, xtals are generally marked with their frequency 😋

Im surprised (out of my non existing knowledge) that the 10Mhz can be routed via a mechanical switch without problems. Recently I reverse engineered a programmable character generator board for the Commodore PET and stumbled over the description of a mod making it switchable by disconnecting a single address line. And this mod was described using a AND gate and switching the second input of it high or low because it was feared that routing the address line (that switches in the kilohertz range) directly over a mechanical switch would lead to problems.

On a board there are 2 physical parameters that are important for what you can and can’t do with regard to physical switches. The first is REP RATE, in this case the signal was 10 Mhz so all is good there. The other one is a little harder to explain and that is edge speed. You can have a square wave signal that pulses at 1 Hz rep rate but has 1ns edges. Even though this signal is 1 Hz the edge speeds dictate that you will need to prepare a 1Ghz board due to the 1ns edges. I will have a video out in the future when we look at a type 284 and calibrate it. In this video I will be dealing with 70 ps edge speeds. What is holding me back from the video at the moment is I do not have the cabling needed to support these speeds. I need to jump to SMA or 3.5mm rf cables. The sampling scope that I have has 3.5mm (RF) jacks on the front end due to the 26Ghz sampler.

Absolutely it can. Edge speed being the most impotent factor. With the lazy edges of 74 series logic would even be fine through a switch. The faster the edges the more it becomes and issue.
