The paludarium / aquaterrarium is built and ready to add more plants to the top section, fix some filtration and finally....add the fish!!! This was one of those builds where everything just went right and the tank turned out better than I imagined. These are some of my favourite tanks to make as well because the ability to add the plants coming out of the tank really makes a huge difference to the overall look. I hope you have enjoyed the build and I will update in a month when everything has grown in even more and do some final shots for a compilation video :)

EDIT!!!: I am incorrect. CLOUDED archerfish do not need brackish, god I just love ichthyology where the only constant is there is always an exception! I already made a comment on this video and the past one, but archer’s REALLY NEED BRACKISH!!! It’s very important for them to live a happy, long, healthy life!

This is so far my favourite tank of yours. The fish really seem to be enriched by the environment. Since there is so much surface above water (plants, wood), they seem to be constantly looking for play. Something that obviously didn't happen at the shop. Let's see, how spitty they get. :)

The hunting music is hilarious! It aids in creating a cinematic experience. The shadows among the hardscape give the tank great depth and mood. This is an enjoyable series of videos, next level, into story telling. Looking forward to the next one!

It's always so captivating to watch a fish with this level of intelligence. You can see they're thinking, searching. It's more than just instinctual feeding. They're figuring it out. It's that kind of behavior that I really love about the larger American cichlids such as Oscars, etc. I was in a fish store today on the way home from work just to see what they had on hand. And I always stop and look at Oscars to reaffirm why I love the charismatic little beasts but unfortunately they were sold out at the moment. lol. I have to say I am a real big fan of the archer fish now that i've seen these.

I just got some archerfish too and "trained" them to spit using red flakes and aqua scaping tweezers. I just left the tweezers on the edge of the tank (I have a rimmed tank but you could attach the tweezers to yours somehow). I left the room and came back, and they were spitting the flakes off the tweezers. These are smaller fish than yours but same species, and it was amazing to watch. Now they do it all the time regardless of when I'm there, the only time they don't is when I'm trying to show people.

It's looking absolutely gorgeous! And I know it will only continue to improve in looks as the tank and the plants mature. Little tip; once you've gotten to the point of training the fish, what you might try is leaving a piece of fruit or veg sitting above the water, like on one of the pieces of wood, and it'll start attracting fruit flies for the archers to spit at. Honestly, dunno if it'd work, but it'd be worth a shot I reckon ^_^

I worked at petco when I was 17yrs old. I remember getting these fish and trying to see if they would spit. I put a couple small feeder crickets on a branch. They all immediately shot at them after I stood back to watch. One of the coolest things I’ve seen a fish do. I have no doubt these guys will figure it out in no time.

MD! I am so happy that you got Archers! I've kept them and found that they are very easy to teach to spit, I used a long pair of forceps and held a small live cricket above the water, the fish see the wiggling insect and spit at it , immediately drop the cricket into the water and it's an instant reward for the fish!

Looks amazing. If you want to let them try catching wild flies try breeding fruit flies (generally small enough to ignore and you can disrupt their breeding if it doesn't work for you). Usually all you need is a banana skin or apple core, leave it somewhere warm and the flies will appear. If you are happy with it you could even put the fruit in an open jar (keeps the fruit from contaminating the water and allows you to clean it easily) and hide it in the plants for the flies to randomly drift out over the water.

The bacteria live on the Sponge, all you did was squeeze the waste and detritus which will cause an ammonia Spike. You'd be best off just putting the Sponges into the filter itself or at least just leaving them in the tank for a few days

Yeh md gets excited to set it up and get the fish in straight away but it’s kind of risky especially with big fish like the archers, especially with no established bacteria and water parameters going up and down, surely 90% water changes for a week everyday is stressful for fish

Yeah, squeezing the sponges into the tank isn't a thing, well it might do something but nowhere near as effective as just putting the actual sponge in the new filter. You're mainly just putting a load of dirt into the water column, the vast majority of the bacteria will stay in the sponge.

If you've got a tackle shop near you see if you can buy a dozen or so maggots, good bit of movement and protein in them to get the archers instincts kicking in, place couple of them on the drift wood going across middle. even if they drop in the fish will go for them.

Hey MD, have you ever considered using aquarium pumps to build your filters "into" the hardscape like how SerpaDesign does? I think it might offer some more aesthetically-pleasing alternatives to simply adding a canister filter and the necessary piping onto the front of your beautiful paludarium. I've done a few custom internal filters myself and it's a really fun opportunity for a new form of creativity in aquascaping / aquarium design. Lends itself especially well to building waterfalls into paludariums that serve as natural looking filters. I know you've done similar with the small rectangular internal filters but never a fully custom self-made filter using just a pump, as far as I can recall? Just an idea! Love your videos either way.

Since it doesn't have a lid I'd be a little weary of crickets escaping all over the place lol. Might try some flightless fruit flies they sell for feeding small frogs maybe? Even the smaller fish and tiger barbs would love those too I bet!

The other thing about bag water is, maybe depending on how long the fish are in there, it's full of poo and stress hormones too. More of an issue going into a smaller tank.
