Adding CHROME Window Trim for First Gen FX35 / FX45 (Project FX ep13)

On Episode 13 of #ProjectFX35 Chris adds the chrome window trim to his first gen FX for a bit of color pop on the black, this also makes it look a little more like a 2nd gen at first glance....

OMG. You are the one and only on KZfaq who did this while everyone doing the opposite. Thank you for this video. IMO Chrome or silver window trim looks much better than black. I'd pay extra for it when buying a car.

I hear ya, thank you. I prefer the trim around the windows on a black or dark colored vehicle. I don't think it's as noticable on a white or silver vehicle so I understand why people black it out on those, but it adds some nice pop on a darker one 😎

Just wanted to say that I did this trim refresh on my 2007 FX35 after watching your video, and the process was exactly as you described so I didn’t run into any new issues. I managed to do both sides of the car by myself in an afternoon, and now it looks almost like it’s new from the factory. I’m so pleased. I definitely encourage anyone contemplating this mod to go ahead and do it! It was a really small expenditure of money and time for a very noticeable improvement in the appearance of my car and was totally worth it. Yay! Thanks so much for making this video for everyone!!

Omg, it looks fresh. Every time I go to the auto parts store I looked at this and I thought it wouldn’t work but now that I know it is possible I will try. Thanks for the video.

My 2003 FX45 window trim is seeing oxidation, it's a well taken care of car and garaged. I still like the black window trim though. Not sure to repaint it or take it to a detail shop, or might get that Cowles trim in a black color and do it myself.

Did you do the chrome strip by the buttom of the door? Any tips on how to cut it evenly? I know that you should cut the molding a tad shorter on back door so it can open without the molding rubbing against the front door..

no, mine already had the chrome running along the bottom of the door from the factory.

Hey bud, can I contact you about my fx35? I’ve got some fading going on around the window trim and I was wondering if you could offer some advice for prep work before I try to replace the black trim with chrome trim. I’m concerned about it not sticking due to the clearcoat fading on the door trim? I’d love to send you photos of it if that’s alright

my infiniti actually came with chrome door handles, but I used vinyl wrap to black them out cause it was a little much for me haha. But if you’re gonna do it the best way would be chrome vinyl wrap.

I have fx35 2006 and under the black there is some chrome how is that 😅 should i take off all the black ?

Yea they all do, except for the back quarter panel so it can be a bit misleading. It's a rubber coating (kinda like flex seal) over metal around the front and middle window portions, but on the rear quarter panel portion it's a completely different material that doesn't have the metal under it. Mine was peeling so I painted black back over it first so it wouldn't show through around the edges. Believe me, I considered the same thing, but would have been disappointed when I got to the back, because even if I added the chrome to the rear only and removed the rubber coating from the rest of the vehicle, it wouldn't match due to slightly different width and then the rear is going to be stuck on so it'll be raised off the car 0.20" compared to the rest and be pretty noticable. 🤷‍♂️

I sold that particular FX but I still see it around town often and it still looks great. I had done this to my previous fx as well and it stayed looking great for the remaining 4 years that I owned it.
