Adding Electric Start to a Coleman Powermate Generator

Recently picked up one of these babies off Craigslist for $110. A carb clean, a few new hoses, and the standard neglected engine work and she'll be purring along. The starter motor add is a fantastic upgrade! I also have a 10k watt electric start generator. Even in the brutal cold of January it used to be a challenge to get her to fire. I fixed that problem by using propane as a starting fluid: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7Cehsmdx9XOdXk.html

Nice job, Dave. I just found one of these generators on the roadside, abandonded for the garbage and I'll be fixing it up. Maybe an electric start too someday if I can get it going. Good video!

You sir are a legend. Had just about given up on the generator but was really hoping to get it going. Powers been out 5 days and it just stopped running after refueling it. Thank you! Runnin strong again.

Did this EXACT mod to my powermate 5000. Ring gear $25, Starter $29, 3hrs labor. I like having the OPTION to pull start in case of battery failure as long as there's a strong teen to yank that damn cord.

Anyone who owns a generator like this knows it takes "two men and a boy" to start it using the pull-starter. This Is a great way to make a good tool even more useful.

You answered important questions that the 'online store' guy couldn't touch. I'm going through the exact same B&S retrofit and my flywheel part number is identical to yours. So, here's the answer... You showed me that I can retrofit the available ring gear to my existing flywheel. The whole job hinges on this important point, otherwise forget the whole thing. The correct (and expensive) electric start flywheel is NOT available. End of story as far as the parts guy is concerned.I can certainly grind off a few tabs, center the new ring gear and drill four holes. In fact, since the flywheel is cast iron I will drill and tap the holes. Loctite works well with cap screws. Thanks again for sharing your retrofit. This makes all the difference, for me. I figure the cost will be ~$100, using many parts in my bin (like the starter solenoid and a pushbutton). The jumper cable posts can be mounted on wood or thick plastic for insulation.

thanks man, i searched how to make electric start for generator a hundred times before finding a real vid instead of the drill method. finally found yours thanks

I have the same generator with the Tecumseh engine. I changed it over to electric start, added a rectifer and charging coil , and made a battery tray. I have it wired to start with a push button, and another push button to hold down to kill it. I also added propane to it. I mounted it on one of those cheap garden trailers with no flat tires. I built a top out of angle iron and square tubing and roofing metal that sits on it and bolts down. I can leave it out in the weather and it is all protected and can pull it around with a riding lawnmower.

Great video; thanks for posting! I have an identical generator, and the last time I started it it took about half an hour of yanking on that stupid cord. It's a great generator except for that, but the cold-start problem had me considering buying a different unit until now. It looks like I have a new project to look forward to!

Cool retrofit. I would suggest some hi-visibility red paint around the positive terminal for easy midnight hookups in the dark.

Good Job. I've got one of those as well and boy those genset are tough.

Just wanted to know how you knew which starter to buy on e-bay - I have a Coleman Powermate 9hp B&S generator and have the OEM ring gear

My coleman generator starts with half a pull every time lol it had no gas in it after 5 years of not being started. I put gas in it and sure enough 1 pull fired right up. Needed a carb clean though.

Just wanted to know how much you paid for the ring gear and starter?....I don't have a drill press either.

Thanks. I have the 8HP Brigs with the same flywheel. I am going to try this. I see the holes are drilled right through the flywheel not tapped. Thanks. I will mention you when I do it.

Have you figured out a way to have the battery charged by the generator?

Awesome Video! I have the exact same Coleman Powermate 5000 and have been looking to convert it to electric start. Your presentation was very straightforward and informative. I have already ordered the ring gear and starter. However, could you please tell me where you purchased the relay. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
@davejones23386 жыл бұрын
I think I ordered it at a small engine parts company online somewhere...but you don't need any special type, just a basic small engine starter relay will do it. Search Ebay for "tractor starter relay" and you'll see them for under $15 bucks. Or just pick one up at the local auto parts joint. Good luck!

Hi I am trying to do the same thing you did, add the starter ring and starter to the same generator, same motor. I can't find any part number from any vendors. I realize what is evolved Used to overhaul old cars motors in my day when we had to.Could you give me some direction. Really appreciate it. thanks so much.

Success! I don't suppose you have the ring gear p/n... do ya? I've had this genset for probably 10 years, and it seems to get harder to start every year....... or possibly I'm getting older. I already have an original starter for it, but nothing else. Mine has these numbers on the engine: Model 19G412 Type: 1180-E2 Code: 9906303A Also... Have you ever considered swapping the spark arrestor for a real muffler? I have a muffler from a small 4-cyl tractor that I'm going to put on mine. A lot of ppl use automotive mufflers, but IMHO, those won't work well, because the airflow of a single cylinder 10hp engine isn't a very good match for such a large muffler. I just need to find a 2-bolt exhaust flange fitting with a pipe stub on it that I can weld/clamp a length of flex conduit to, then I can mount the muffler on the frame and (hopefully) not worry about breaking anything. (my engine has both screw-mount and flange-mount exhaust fittings) Your comments about the gas tank getting gummed-up was also helpful... I think mine has become that way as well. There's another device in-line with the fuel line, between the inline fuel filter and the carb itself... do you know what that is? It's behind the air filter enclosure... which I have not tried to remove... it has a fuel inlet (from the gas tank), and the line that goes to the carb.

Looks like you have the same motor I have...the part number I used for the ring gear is 392134. Just googling that number will bring up a bunch of places to buy it. I originally wanted to get part number 690626, which I think is the correct flywheel with the integral gear but it's no longer available :( I did consider putting a bigger muffler on it but after looking at a bunch of youtube videos on it I decided it wasn't worth the trouble....turns out most of the noise you're hearing when the unit is running full blast is mechanical noise like valve clatter and combustion noise that doesn't even flow out through the muffler. So a big muffler will silence it a little, but won't give you a night/day noise change. I wound up buying a small inverter generator that's super-quiet, I'll post a review of it one of these days.... The thing on the blower housing on these motors is a fuel pump. If i recall, it's vacuum powered. I took mine apart and cleaned it, it was gummed up pretty good, i recommend cleaning it too. Good luck!

dave jones - Thanks for the info... it will be a big help. As far as mufflers goes... I held an automotive muffler up against the spark arrestor outlet, and it was actually a significant reduction... even though it wasn't matched for airflow... so I am going to go ahead and do that as well.

Dave my is a Coleman Powermate 4000. Can I do same job in my generator, any help please.
@mouser4856 жыл бұрын
Yes, the fact that yours is a 4000 watt and not a 5000 watt generator like in the vid, wont matter. Keep in mind, some of these generators already come with a ring gear installed on the front of the engine. We have a Powermate 5000 Maxa Genarator with a 10HP Tecumseh motor and it already has the ring gear.
@johndough91876 жыл бұрын
My Powermate 4000 has a Tecumseh engine, IIRC.
