Getting Started On The Piano (NEW free video series!):
►www.pianote.com/getting-started
Learning to harmonize your melodies will open up a whole new world of texture and color to your songs.
Harmonizing will not only make you sound like a pro, but it will also help you to gain a deeper understanding of chord structures and how they work.
When you harmonize you are improvising, utilizing music theory, and training your ear!
In this lesson, I show you exactly how to find the harmony notes using chord names as your guide! I'm using "House Of The Rising Sun" as my example. You can download the lead sheet here to practice along:
►www.pianote.com/blog/adding-h...
Here are the key points of the lesson with their timestamps:
Intro - 0:00
Keep the melody note as the highest note - 0:30
The easiest way to choose a harmony note - 0:46
You don't have to harmonize every note - 1:41
What to do with the left hand - 2:24
Using your ear to determine what works best - 3:04
As you'll see, a lot of this has to do with chord inversions and being able to build a chord below your melody note.
If you want to learn more about chords and their inversions, check out our FREE series on chords:

@@PianoteOfficial do the bass notes always take the note symbols found on the lead sheet? For instance, where we have a chord of C major, bass takes C?
@mrpedrobraga
@mrpedrobraga 3 жыл бұрын
@@reuelmensah7380 Not if you don't want to. That's what you would call an alternate voicing/an inversion. The Cmaj7 chord, for example, you can play any keys as long as you play C, E, G and B, in whichever order gives the best sound.
@reuelmensah7380
@reuelmensah7380 3 жыл бұрын
@@mrpedrobraga thanks for the help, really appreciate. Still on the subject of playing chords to a melody, sometimes in a lead sheet, I find some chords written this way; G/D As in G slash D.... what does that actually mean?
@unsightedmetal6857
@unsightedmetal6857 2 жыл бұрын
@@reuelmensah7380 (I know your comment was 9 months ago) G/D means a G major chord with D as the lowest note. G major is normally G-B-D, but G/D would be D-G-B.

Lisa, you JUST helped me greatly on one of my songs...it was "too busy" and notes/chords WAY too cacaphonic ... SIMPLIFYING high lead helps tremendously!!! It allows simplfied FLOW of melody-over-chords and changes the overall sound dynamics...I can cut (in) or (out) of the busy chords/lead mix now, and the melody almost writes itself. Thanks a bunch for this (now obvious) adjustment... I don't think you realize how good you are. Excellent tips and techniques !!! - Doug (a.k.a. "Crossbow", BMI, songwriter, Florida, USA)
