This demonstration of adding a stone to your textile art is made up of two parts. It’s a bit more complex than the previous tutorial but, if you’ve done any embroidery, very doable. After the competed foundation stitching, where you attach the rock to the fabric, it’s just a matter of combining your blanket stitch with a back stitch. This combo of stitches is called Shisha (Google it), which is Hindi for small mirror or glass. The foundation part of this tutorial is different from the Shisha method, only because I’m working with something more 3 dimensional versus flat. There will be a part 3, which has three different methods and are much simpler than this method...just in case you want to ease in.

Awesome 👍. Looks like an eyeball on a frog or lizard. I was wondering why you would put a black stone on a dark blue background... Very glad I stayed to the end. Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing. 🤓

It was the perfect shaped stone, not necessarily the perfect color choice...but it’s what I had for the moment.

This technique is amazing! Thank you for showing us how to do it. How many strands of cotton embroidery thread are you using? I cannot tell if it is 4 or 6 or does it matter? I like the idea of using natural elements such as you have shown with the stone. Have you tried other objects too such as sea shells? I am very interested to try this out. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Catherine, I used 6 strands. Just be sure you don’t have any trouble pulling it through your fabric. I’ve sewn on sea shells but, I used one of the techniques that is in next weeks video. I’ve also sewn stick shapes as well, again, using a technique you’ll see next week. This particular way of sewing I like to use for smooth round objects. Happy creating!
