This video is a quick tutorial where I show you how I painted my true metallic metal Warhammer 40k Adeptus Custodes armor.
This video is part 1 of 2 parts and covers the whole process of painting gold armor. The second part will cover the leather, gems and ropes.
I use this process to paint all my Legio Custodes minis for my Armies on Parade 2024 Horus Heresy entry.

1. Prime the Mini Black
2. Cover all non gold parts with PK-PRO - LIQUID MASK
3. Cover the Guardian spear or sword with PK-PRO - Masking Tape.
4. Base coat the mini with Golden - Iridescent Gold Deep (Fine) using a brush or airbrush.
5. Add counter shadows by glazing with a brush or airbrush a mixture of 1:1:1 Citadel - Black Legion Contrast, Citadel - Contrast Medium and Vallejo - Airbrush Thinner 71.261.
6. Overpaint all armor parts with a mixture of 1:1:2 Citadel - Darkoath Flesh Contrast, Citadel - Contrast Medium and water.
7. Drybrush the entire armor with an Artis Opus - Series D brush size M and Golden - Iridescent Gold Deep (Fine) in circular motions.
8. Dry brush the highlighted areas of the armor with an Artis Opus - Series D brush size M and Golden - Iridescent Gold (Fine) in circular motions.
9. Using an Artis Opus - Series D size S brush, dry brush the highlights with strokes from above using a 1:1 mixture of Golden - Iridescent Gold (Fine) and Citadel - Stormhost Silver.
10. Remove the PK-PRO LIQUID MASK.
11. Apply a glaze shade and a bolt recess shade with a 1:1 mix of Citadel - Darkoath Flesh Contrast and water.
12. Base coat the metal parts with Vallejo - Gunmetal Grey 77.720
13. Shade the metal parts with pure Citadel - Nuln Oil
14. Highlight the metal parts with Citadel - Ironbreaker
15. Highlight the edges of the armor and bolts with Citadel - Stormhost Silver.
16. Paint leather, ropes and gems in your preferred colours (there will be a guide on this in part 02)
17. Add deep recesses to the armor with a 1:1 mix of Citadel - Gore-Grunta Fur and Water.
18. Paint the weapon in your preferred colours
19. Apply a full coat of Vallejo Premium Satin Varnish - 62.063 with a brush or airbrush.
20. Done!
