Hi All!, a little update on this grill. The product is live on kickstarter on the 5th June (2021) and as per the feedback here, the mesh of the grill is now a thicker gauge.

My only worry is the very thin wire and how long those will last under high heat for a long period of time. 🤔 I guess only more uses will show how well it lasts. And your right....a black bag would be better 👍🏼 great review Andy! My only complaint is that it needed more bacon 😂😂

I like it. An additional arm for pot-hanging would be nice. Also, a folding grill would be a selling point for me, to make it easier to fit in a day pack. I like that the wire rack sits under the frame so that sausages are less likely to roll off. Having an potion of a second leg for enough stability for a Dutch oven would be something I would consider too. I have the TJM metalworks fire anchor (like Simon’s) and I am super happy with it, it will most likely live longer than me. But if this folded down smaller and had a pot hanger (or I’d make one for it) it would be on my wish list for it’s light weight advantage. Like it.

G'day Andy. I guess as a kiwi, I should be supporting a Nz made product but can't. Down here we call that main support rod conduit pipe. Very light, but over a period of time near extreme heat it can lose its ability to support even your pet spider. You were lucky pushing that into soft ground. ..try hitting a rock or tree root as you push it down, and you find it folding in half. I think the best I've ever seen was the cast steel setup that Simon a bloke in the woods reviewed a week or 3 back. Yep a bit heavier, but a long way more durable. Love your channel. Take care.

Hey. As others have stated re the mesh gauge it would be good for the mesh either to be detachable and so therefore adaptable to taking other sizes of mesh plate.. or have two other arms - one for small pot- cup and and other with a hook for a zebra /Billie can.. Not bothered about the colour of the bag, something that is robust, heat resistant and easy to clean after a trip would be grand.. As for the ground spike.. would be good to have an adjustable one - height wise... for those using portable mesh fire pits... I like it a lot... be great for Wild camping on motorcycles .... Looking forward to testing it out.... don't be too long though... somebody or some other company may beat you to it.... Good fortune ....

Maybe if there was a point on the end that goes in to the ground and the wider part of the triangle part had a flat top say 20mm wide, you could push it in to the ground with your foot in tougher ground.also the pole part could be in two parts like tent poles.

Does look good Andy. I was a bit concerned when I saw you put the kettle on it, thought there could be a bend at the weld where the mesh goes over the pole. Must be a lot of forces acting on that join. So it would be interesting to know how it’s held up on the prototypes. I do like it though. Thanks for sharing. Oh, a black bag would be good I think.

Looks a fantastic product to me, especially if as others have said the mesh is a little more heavy duty, a more neutral bag colour, padding in the bag to be used as a sitting/kneeling mat and a smaller grill plate included so as food could be swivelled round to keep warm as the finishing touches go on the big old steak I’d have on there..!!! The mesh on the grill looks like it needs to be a bit thicker or stronger. I also don't think its going to sell very well for $90 though, maybe half that especially made in China.

Agree with the comments hitherto. Mesh looks weak as, clearly sagged after the first use. I love the anchor, perfect for beach cooking, handle, look, I would prefer something that does not hold heat, wood on a magnetic coupling maybe?, bag colour is shocking lol and I don't like the material, would prefer a cotton sack that I can wash if needs be. If he get's it right I would love to see our Kiwi brothers down here get a new product to market. Lets see a stage two design and go from there.

I did some testing today Ill be putting the videos up soon I hung a 10-liter water container under the grill and filled it up to see when it would break. then I tested the mesh putting it in a fire with a brick on it for 3 hours and tried to get it red hot. The mesh did not break it only deformed. I will be increasing the mesh to 1mm which does not seem like much but if you double the thickness you 4x the strength so increase the thickness by 25% is twice the strength. The reason I am increasing to 1mm is I have just discovered from having a closer look with everyone's comments the .8 mesh can work harden and break where it is spot welded on to the round bar. Thanks again for your comment Subscribe and I will email you the video.

Not a bad looking piece of gear, Andy. The only thing that caused me to pause was the gauge of wire used on the grate. I think I would go bigger and space them further apart, from what I can tell on screen. I had a small campfire grate with a fine grate and it warped and sank so quick, I tossed it and got a better one I still use. Does it seem heavy duty enough (the main rod and attachment to it in general) to hold up a cast iron skillet or to hang a small Dutch oven from? I have ideas... 🤔 Thanks for the look, buddy. Good to see you get out.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I have cooked a 2.2kg leg of lamb no problem, a small skillet may be ok. but probably not a dutch oven. l like the mesh size because it is light and easy to clean it does warp in the heat though. what size is the mesh on the grill you like?
@andyrr30
@andyrr30 3 жыл бұрын
Looks like a good product, I can see the general comments are about the grill mesh looking too thin, testing with extreme heat and a couple of bricks as mentioned below will evidence the strength. Only thing I would say is to be able to extend the height so have a second pole that slots over the initial one. Also just have a pole with a hook in so you can hang a pot over the fire rather than use the grill all the time. its a lightweight addition but makes the kit complete for cooking and boiling at the same time ???? and Yes more woodland colour for the bag ;-)

Hi Peter thanks for your comment. what thickness would you like the mesh?
@petersmith6974
@petersmith6974 3 жыл бұрын
Zalderan Nathan Id say that somewhere along the lines of the thickness you would find a good quality BBQ would use for a grill. Something that will not warp or burn out quickly. What you have used right now as a prototype is a bit thin and think in time it will burn out in a not so long a period of time if used often.

I will also increase the thickness of the wire mesh so it looks better I have a sample with thicker mesh I will test that too. subscribe in the link above if you want to see the video and stay up to date with progress thanks for your help. Great idea and looks to work ok. Like most people have said the mesh doesn't look that robust and can't be easily replaced. Maybe it would be better if the mesh sat on top of the frame and had rolled edges so it slid over it. Mesh would be replaceable then and you could even have different mesh size options. At that price it will be very easy for it to be copied overseas and flogged on ebay imo. Hopefully he does ok from this as we need more locally produced products so that people can support them.
