Adobe changed their Terms and Conditions to try and steal customer data.
When customers realised and began cancelling Adobe subscriptions, Adobe tried to gaslight and lie to their customers.
And then 2 weeks later they did a U-turn and completely changed their Terms and Conditions because of the public outcry.
I have cancelled Adobe and so should you if you don't like companies that try to screw over their own customers.

I switched to Affinity when Adobe announced their subscription basis years ago, but I still use CS3 (and Lightroom V1) on an older computer and with an older epson printer that I can still get ink for. I'll see what comes out of it (and this "discontinued/obsolete product" does not exempt them here in Germany - a perpetual license is a perpetual license, so they have to activate my product or give me an alternative way of making it run). Maybe Adobe needs to be actually sued for this practice …

This might be commented already but heres how you effectively cancel your "annual" subscription without paying hundreds of dollars of early cancellation fees: Switch your plan to the cheapest plan (doesnt matter which technically because this will be reimbursed anyway) then immediately cancel. Youll get a prorated amount returned from your previous plan, and also get your new plan amount reimbursed within a week. The reason why this works is because with every new plan you sign up for, you get 30 days to cancel for free. Since you switched plans and they dont charge a fee for this, you can just cancel the new plan rght away. I tried this last week and it worked perfectly.

Could see it was transferring data, so clearly even after removing the software they keep the trackers on and conveniently forgot I wasn't a customer anymore. Even with MULTIPLE software removal tools the Adobe suite is STILL being flagged in my background processes. It's fucking absurd, and the fact that they still are collecting my data after I uninstalled their software is the icing on the cake.

What's also pretty vile is that in the EU they make it much clearer that you're signing up for a year, and what that will cost, and also much easier to cancel, because the EU has consumer protection laws that force them to. One thing worth noting is that them adding the paragraph about not using user data for AI generative model training is that they still have, as per their ToS signed by every user, the ability to use your content for ML. Machine learning is the broad term, AI is the specific one. They will still use your stuff for ML, just not for this particular AI. Very important distinction, they still will have what they originally wanted. This outrage has effectively changed nothing.

Generative ai is not the bad guy in this scenario - because I look at it as a more accurate clippart resource- you still need to be able to manipulate it, and if you have an idea or vision it can only get you in range of it - not always what you are looking for. The way ai learns may be questionable if your are taking art from people without their permission or without giving them a royalty a little like sampling was in the music scene then thats not right. The creative industry has been eroding for 30 years - there was a time when in an agency had a designer, illustrator, writer and a plethora of other positions then we were asked to multi-skill learn new programs so we became multimedia artists the businesses cut their costs made more money and we had to keep up. I imagine now they probably have mostly freelance/contract designers that they use project based which has been around for a long time. I am out of the industry for many years and someone asked me to design their logo last year for 80 euro( I would not even turn on the computer for that ) because thats what another designer quoted, I told them to use the other designer. They should just go to fiver and have rapid fire artists work (they may even do a great job)on their logo or get ai to generate it. Like many people they want everthing dirt cheap and not interested in a long term collaboration that favors everyone.

I fell for Adobe’s deceitful pricing in college when I needed to use illustrator for a 1 week project. Entirely thought that I signed up for a $5 per month subscription that I could cancel at any time at no additional expense. After canceling the subscription the next week I was shocked to see Adobe charged me $60 (price for one entire year). At the time I only had a couple hundred dollars to my name and really needed that money. Hate shady business practices. Shame on Adobe.

I used PayPal for my subscription, after a few months of use and realising Adobe are still bloatware, I went to cancel and realised the same issue as you, immediately revoked the PayPal authorisation. They tried billing me as usual for three more months, then I got a surcharge stating it’s been auto cancelled and I owe them for the rest of the term. Well that was over a year ago, nothing has come of it and they don’t email anymore.

I am not an attorney, but have worked with corporate attorneys on IP and licenses for decades. This narrrative that ordinary people can't understand a legal document is simply untrue. This is not some "Whereas" and "Therefore" wordiness here, and what you read is what you get. Pay no attention to executives, corporate attorneys, or PR people when they start talking about what the terms "mean". Whatever the terms say is the meaning and their explanations have no bearing unless the terms are clarified similarly in writing. Just go looking for definitions when you see capitalized words because they can be defined in ways other than what you may assume in a general conversational context. The attorneys at large firms like Adobe know exactly what they're doing. They parse this stuff to death and that's why it takes such a long time to do it.

I purchased Adobe when you could actually own the software. The interesting thing about that is that, even though you technically owned the software, Adobe stopped supporting it. Furthermore, as a result of requiring updated software to continue, the purchased software became useless. Essentially Adobe disabled the content you had already paid for and owned. I ceased doing any business with them at that time because it was obvious that they were just a bunch of thieves masquerading as a business.

Same thing happened to me. When Adobe went to the subscription model, I told myself, "Screw that -- I'll just use my purchased copy of CS6 as long as I can." A few months later, when I launched a CS app, a window came up saying my license had expired and I had to update to the subscription version. I called Adobe, made a huge stink, talked with 4 different people, and they ended up giving me a new passcode that would allow access for another year. I used that time to migrate to other tools.

You're not telling the full story, people were stealing from Adobe because even though they required the software purchases there were tons of pirated versions. I should know - I never bought software. I had hackers install every single version that I ever used up until 2012. Of course the work versions were paid for but in my personal life I bootlegged everything and I know plenty of designers who did the same thing. Adobe had to do something, they were losing hundreds of millions. That doesn't make them thieves, they're a business.

I have never paid for a single piece of software. Just call me Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate. I have never bought Windows or Adobe, and I build computers and am a professional photographer. I also dabble in digital art and 3D modeling and CAD. I thought back then that paying $1200 for software that edits photos is insane, and now the idea of paying $60 for software to edit photos is still insane. I have never paid and I never will. Autodesk Inventor, 3ds Max, Maya, Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Camtasia, Corel Painter -- never paid for any of it. And I never will. People, learn to create rules in your Windows Firewall, and go nuts. F*ck subscriptions. Know what pisses me off is the fact that colleges are making students pay for Adobe subscriptions -- because they are beholden to Adobe, for whatever reason -- even if the student only needs Adobe for a single day, or week, or month, or however long it takes to finish a project required for a class. Even though that student will only have need for that software for however long it takes for he or she to complete a college project requiring Adobe, he or she is locked into Adobe's subscription for a year. THAT is the basis for a lawsuit, it is patently evil. Nevermind the headache of getting out of that subscription. And don't think for a moment that Adobe doesn't know this. Of course they do. And the colleges promoting Adobe know this too. I wouldn't be surprised if Adobe were giving colleges across the country free licenses for college instructors as long as the colleges required the students to buy the Adobe subscriptions out of their own pockets. Again, people, pay for nothing. Even if it isn't a subscription model, it is almost certainly massively overpriced. Just find some key generators, some cracks, some DLLs, and go nuts. I don't care. The little guy struggling to create a business model or break into an industry doesn't have the money to pay $2000 for CAD software. It's ridiculous. The little guy needs to get smarter. Keep your money. Those corporations are rich enough.

Can other offerings truly use plugins , brushes and assets I have already invested in and will I now have a steep learning curve for a disparate gaggle of programs with no uniformity of use? As a business is it really practical to dump Adobe,, will it really make a difference? I don’t find Affinity does everything I need it to do. The only programs I truly find worthy alternatives are DaVinci Resolve for Premiere Pro and Logic instead of Audition. Adobe CC is just easier workflow and a common interface. Is change truly cost effective? Won’t Affinity move to a subscription model in the end now it’s been bought by Canva? All these alternatives will be bought up and eventually incorporated not a subscription model.

Bet at the time, even who used Corel products knew that Adobe programs were SOLID, and that fact was for decades considered an almost undisputed truth. Until Adobe came along with the change from "buying" to "renting" their products via CC. The amount of bugs, inconsistencies and flaws skyrocketed in an alarming and clearly perceived rate. Most people just kept using Adobe because of its kind of "monopoly" on the market, being the inventors of Postscript and all... Software subscriptions are like living with an abusive partner. Everyday you come home expecting peace and tranquility but there's another letter with a whole new set of demands from her lawyer telling you what you must agree to or else. Everyone, please stop with the Stockholm syndrome and the Adobe problem goes away.
@martinskoog1777
@martinskoog1777 16 күн бұрын
You've presented a strong analogy between abusive relationships and software subscriptions that demand constant updates and agreement to new terms. It's a creative way to highlight the frustration users experience with the feeling of being trapped or manipulated. The idea of "walking away" or choosing alternative software solutions is a valid one, and it's true that as consumers we have the power to make those choices. By becoming more aware of the options available and resisting the pressure to conform, we can collectively influence the software industry to be more user-friendly and transparent. The term "Stockholm syndrome" is a strong one, and while it might not perfectly describe the situation, it does evoke a sense of being psychologically attached to something despite its negative effects. It's an interesting way to frame the discussion about consumer choice and the potential for change. It's important to remember that while the comparison is evocative, software subscriptions and abusive relationships are fundamentally different things. One is a business model, and the other is a harmful interpersonal dynamic. While both can involve feelings of powerlessness and frustration, it's important to distinguish between them when discussing solutions. Overall, your analogy is thought-provoking and raises valid concerns about the current state of software subscriptions. It encourages critical thinking and empowers consumers to take control of their choices.

Wild that they expect people to believe that their intention wasn't to use their data to train their generative AI models when their software and terms both clearly state in plain English that that's what they intend to do.

Forgot to cancel until the new year, then couldn’t cancel without paying a massive surcharge of over £150. I gave up on Adobe some years ago, when they started telling me that I had to have the latest high end PC to run their software (My PC at the time was a six month old high end PC) and then forced me to upgrade the software I was paying for, then crippling it so it didn't work. But what really pissed me off was when I tried to uninstall Adobe products. It took two days, numerous program downloads and three different registry edits. Only when you go through this exercise do you realise how much spyware Adobe installs on your PC without your knowledge. Oh and my PC doubled in speed after the uninstall. I'll NEVER use Adobe again.
