In this video, we're excited to announce that the Adolf Sutro's Tunnel in Virginia City , Nevada has been restored and is now open to the public!
Built in 1875, the Adolf Sutro Tunnel was once one of the longest and most famous tunnels in the world that was built to drain the Famous Comstock Lode of water in Virginia City, Nevada. After years of neglect, the tunnel was restored and reopened to the public thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and local organizations.

The Sutro Tunnel is just outside of Virginia City and if you have never been there then you need to get go and see what the great Folks of the Sutro Foundation are doing to preserve our history. They have been working tirelessly for Years to preserve some of the most iconic structures Virginia City has and you will see that in this video. If you love History like I do then donate your time, skills or a couple bucks to help " Keep the Dream Alive " .... they would greatly appreciate it and it would help so much. Just click the link to get started. Thanks. thesutrotunnel.org/

Jeff, you say they are now open to the public. Are there regular days/hours they are open during the week, or is it hit or miss like the hoist engine? I'll be in Reno for a reunion the first week of October, and since some in the group are talking about a visit to Virginia City, well the tunnel ain't that far away!

My aunt and uncle used to live in Carson City and move to Placerville. My uncle was a retired Woodshop teacher and would perform volunteer blacksmithing at Sutter's Mill. I spent many summers in Placerville as a kid and traveling down to sutter's mill working in the blacksmithing shop with him. this whole area reminds me of Sutter's Mill as a kid on summer break.

I'll tell ya Jeff, I got all jacked up on this one! First the Sutro Tunnel, a road map into history. How awesome! Think of the gold and silver still down there. Then, you give the best class of classifying and panning I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot). Then you find gold! It is truly a pleasure watching you work Jeff. Then to top it off you get wet!!! Does it get any better than that? :-) Thanks so much from the cheap seats!

Having been up to Virginia city several times & looking at all that was on display in town this episode is really nice to see here Jeff. The amount of history & Silver Wealth from that area is purely astounding!! Thanks again for sharing your passion & findings with us . Hopefully someday that entire tunnel can be reopened to the public , but at $8000 per 5 ft going in it’s gonna be awhile before that day happens I’m afraid. Wishing them all the best wishes & success with the project & fundraising needed . 🤞😎👍

I watched some parts a few times. This comment could go on & on because the content was so full of history about the Sutro tunnel and Virginia City Trading Co. Big respect to John Martin & others who worked so hard for what they believed in only to lose their lives to that big blast💪⛏️🙏 I cant wrap my head around 3-5M gallons of water removed daily😮 Fantastic! And the area that produced 40K oz of gold, What!😁🔥 And there really is gold in Home Depot sand? I love this video so much, such cool old equipment brought back to life and SO MUCH MORE💯 Thank you Jeff💥⛏️ What a treat!

When boards come right out a mill they are 2x4, but after the get planed and put in a kiln to dry they shrink. Back in the day they didn't mill and dry kiln lumber like we do now.
@Askjeffwilliams
@Askjeffwilliams 10 ай бұрын
then why not start with a larger board to account for that
@NET-POSITIVE
@NET-POSITIVE 10 ай бұрын
@Askjeffwilliams it keeps cuts of lumber uniform regardless if they are dry kiln, planed, or normal. Otherwise, there is no standard cutting among different mills and countries. Starting with a larger border also makes more wasted board feet. STANDARDIZE it very important with little waste. How is that for common sense!!

I was 6 and most were skinny dipping so we left. That whole area had mills homes etc. My grandfather's secretary veas w us and she was born in Dayton so I got a tour of buildings that weren't there any more. Hi Folks, I visited the Sutro Tunnel in 1964, and I seem to recall that there were two tracks; one to carry miners etc. In, and another to take overburden, and some ore, out. Sutro got royalties on the ore, and also on the amount of ice that they brought in to cool those shafts. The rock temperature was something like 100 degrees(?) so they brought in the ice to cool down the mines, and miners down. It seems like there was an informational handout, written like a newspaper written about the tunnel. It was a long time ago. Fondest of memories, R.

A trick of the trade.. When you’re in a small creek and throwing the rocks out and using a rock Rake. You are concentrating the material. You will be able to process many yards in the day much more efficiently than just running a box.

Man vintage equipment is some of the coolest things i ever come across. the simplicity and longevity is unmatched from old tools and machinery. It was a true free market where big corps didnt take over. so the companies had to be the best of the best to sell their product.. its when the dollar wasnt so inflated, where quality (companies Image) was more important than making a few more bucks. as time grew people got greedier ( 2x4 wood order in a nutshell) until they were able to get them so cheap that replacement was cheaper than building one nice one . the consumer always loose in the long run.

Adolph took a great sum of his monies and built the "Sutro Baths" on the edge of Golden Gate park where it met the sea. Just north of the famed Cliff House. It was an astonishing bit of charitable construction for the residents of San Francisco. His mansion in San Francisco is also worthy of a special trip. I have visited the Sutro tunnel many years ago when the tunnel was still boarded up and closed. Fantastic to see the work being done. I love history. Our channel ^^^ is chock full of history in Cochise county Arizona. Please Jeff, let us know what you think of the channel. We did a video some time ago on Camp Naco (last of the Bufallo soldiers forts on the border) and helped Friends of camp Naco and Professor Orosco in securing with the town of bisbee a 4.8 million grant from the dept of the intereor for the camps preservation. Warren ballpark, oldest continuiously opperating baseball park in America in Bisbee. Love to see you as a subscriber Jeff. My name is Geoff of Adventuring with the S.G.O.C.C

Are those first timber sets historically correct? They look like sets from a train tunnel. Would love to see the joints on them, to see how they were assembled. Thanks for another great video.
