Жыл бұрын

Addison's foster care journey could have been a front page story. She was adopted from her home country of Ethiopia with the promise of a better life in America. After only a few years with her adopted parents - and not speaking the language - they placed her in the hospital, and then later, foster care.
Update: A lot of people have written to find out what happened to Addie and her brother. She posted in the comment section but I’m adding the text of her post here, as well. We both appreciate all the love that’s come her way.
Hey, everyone! It's Addison, and I just wanted to pop in here to express my immense gratitude for all the love and encouragement you've showered upon me. I'm doing fantastic, thanks to the man above! 🙌
Now, about my brother- he spent his childhood in a privately owned Group Home called children’s home from age seven until he turned 18 in March 2023. We were able to reunite, and it's been a heartwarming journey.
On the family front, I had an incredible opportunity in 2022 to return to Ethiopia after 15 years, reconnecting with my biological family and reuniting with them! 🌍
As for my adoptive parents, the last time I saw or heard from them was back in 2016, just before they gave up their parental rights. No contact since then.
If you're curious about what God is up to in my life, stick around! I've got a book and a KZfaq channel launching in 2024. Your love and support mean the world to me!
Remember, no matter the current circumstances, God is always in control, and He'll never leave you hanging. Trust in Him, and remember His timing is always perfect. Thanks again for all your love and encouragement! 💖✨

Adopting kids from African countries has always been glamorized in the west. Celebs like Madonna and Angie Jolie made it fashionable. The Ethiopian government should help facilitate her return. I hope she finally gets to connect with her biological family.

Her birth parents dumped her. Her country failed her. So blame them first. Had she stayed in Ethiopia she would have been much worse off. It isnt like she was born into a rich, or even loving family. There are too many such kids in Africa and most end up worse off than her. That is tge reality.

More horrifying than her adoption experience is the situation with the hospital. I can't believe that a hospital would administer treatment based on a diagnosis given by laymen. If they didn't psychologically assess her themselves, they need to be investigated, so that it doesn't happen again.

I am not shocked at how children are treated in these mental health facilities because these psyche meds are being pushed off on people who are simply visiting their doctors for aches and pains. Instead of them determining the root cause of physical pain they are quick to point you in the direction of being depressed so therefore, they start writing those prescriptions for mood altering meds. Advocate for yourselves and others!

I love you Addison, your story gives me so much strength. I had a similar story although funnily enough, mine is the other way around. Originally South Sudanese/Ethiopian . Came to Sweden at 3 and lived in an orphanage there untill 12. I was reunited with my "mother", a woman I had never met or at least couldn't remember. They said she was my biological mum and that she had been looking for me. I moved to England to live with her. I was excited. I also had the language issue. I could only speak Swedish, this family were neither Sudanese nor Ethiopian, they were Ugandan and spoke English and their Ugandan language. They started to abuse me, look me in the house sometimes for months straight when they left to go on holiday. I ran away at the age of 16 and lived from sofa to sofa. It's difficult to get it together when you have little trust in others. I find it difficult to trust or depend on people. Well done for having come out on the other side. Your story gives me strength.

I’m glad Ethiopia decided not to allow adoptions from outside the country only because I’ve heard and met a few parents who have this white savior complex, but who dont realize they’re doing it for themselves. One single mom from work adopted a kid from Ethiopia a long time ago, and she said things about her son that made me feel like she didn’t like him. She always complained that he was getting in trouble, and that he didn’t listen, etc. She didn’t offer good news about him. I had to ask her one time “what do you like about your son?” She had to think about it. She said “He’s funny.” Ok, why did I have to ask about good things about your own son instead of complaints?

imagine adopting a child taking them to an unfamiliar country then giving up on them for depression which is to be expected considering everything! it must have been such a culture shock! Instead of talking to her and understanding her they ship her off to mental wards and allowed her to be drugged up. It’s obvious they didn’t really want her and could not be bothered to help her they adopted her as an add on to the younger child. Thank god the foster place she was at thought to take her off the drugs otherwise who knows how she would have ended up! We all know that plenty of children are abused in foster homes. This story is just proof that all it takes sometimes is for someone to care enough to step in. And now look at her and what she has achieved. 🎉

Praise God! Sadly, sounds like the adoptive parents were clueless and were not fit for the privilege. But I commend them for surrendering their parental rights instead of trying to take matters into their own hands. God had a plan for this beautiful young woman and she lived through that to share the gospel and help others. Glory to God!

This is a story of deep childhood trauma: extreme poverty, abandonment and severe abuse... sadly, these don't go away, and if they're not.addressed in therapy they can grow and make the pain worse over the years....it's easy for achievements and faith to become milestones on the healing journey, but they can also become culprits. I either for Adison to start this healing journey so abandonment and abuse no longer hold her down. ❤

wow. that is one heck of a story. her adoptive parents are absolutely wretched. the doctor who happily put her on medication should not be practicing. i am proud of her resilience. she definitely has the divine looking out for her. guessing by now she's graduated? i hope she's been able to reconnect with her mother. and where is her brother?!?! oh goodness my nerves are rattling wondering about his experience

As a Jew with Ethiopian, German, and Spanish heritage, it was her closeness with G-d (your personal relationship created from al those letters) that made her so strong. Hopeful for accountability of those awful adoptive/foster parents.

Some people are so evil. Those people who "adopted" her and dumped her shouldve been revealed. I bet when they got her and her brother they were parading them around acting like they were saviors. Great that Addison was able to get on her feet and is living a better life without those arsehats. Hopefully, she reconnects with family in Ethiopia one day.
