Roberta Bell, a former correctional officer, made a promise to a young inmate she met while working at a Louisiana prison. Bell agreed to care for the inmate's baby. It was a decision that cost Bell her job at the prison. Bell tells CBS News lead national correspondent David Begnaud if she had to do it all over again, she would make the same choice. It's just the first step in Bell's journey toward selflessness and giving.

theres a line you cant cross as a C/O period ! thats what the prison counselor is for, to help make calls and get the beby placed somewhere until the mother is free, 2 months is not a long time. i worked at the women prison and I work at the mens prison now, I love talking to inmates and trying to help them but theres a line. This is how inmates manipulated officers & sometimes officers will bring in drugs, cell phone etc because inmates try and play on your emotions "if you let them" she could have referred the women to the prison counselor & left it alone .

Even though Roberta Bell means well, management has a different way of thinking because they believe she failed to uphold the standards and policies of the Department of Corrections because she fraternized with inmates. I wish Roberta Bell the best of luck in the future.

Rules are there for a reason. Even if you have a family member in the jail say a son or daughter you cannot work with them in that prison. You have to go to another side of the prison. Guards are there to provide security that is why foster care exists. It is a complete violation of security rules to take care of an inmates child. This conflict of interest is what leads to a security breach. She might have blown her pension and retirement because she got flipped by inmate who played on her heart strings. @@My2CentsYall

No Corrections is designed to help and assist those who want help. Some inmates need to stay in prison because they are a danger to society, some of these inmates have murdered multiple people. There are 100's of programs for inmates to participate in, high school diploma, GED, Culinary arts, motor pool and more. Now weather the inmate chooses to participate and take advantage of these programs is on them. If an inmate chooses to get involved in drugs and the gangs that are in prisons than "they keep they self down" not corrections. Some not all c/o's are supportive, empathetic and educate inmates that are willing to listen however you have a lot of inmates that are sentenced to life without parole, sentenced to 50 yeaars, 100 years, life plus 33 years and the list goes on. "Some"of these inmates with these types of sentences are not trying to be educated, they dont care about who is being supportive or empathetic, They have 1 agenda and that is to get involved in crime inside the prison because they know they case not getting overturned, they not getting out do to a technicality they here for the long hall & guess what ? They can be a problem and its a lot of them in a lot of prisons across the united states and guess who has to deal with those types of inmates as well as the inmates who will see day light................We do the c/o's, the counselors, nurses, therapists, the dentist that work inside these fences. So you tell us, what we supposed to do with the murderers , child molesters etc who not getting out of prison and dont want no help from nobody, the ones who go to church at the chapel to exchange drugs, the ones who are in the gangs ....the "bloods, crips" etc who are ready or willing to harm officers and other inmates at anytime....... tell us how corrections is supposed to handle this part of the prison population that everyone is forgetting about on here. This woman is not incredible, its a blessing she is fired because who knows what inmates could have got her to do.......do to her "emotions"

@@d-don6966Rifhr, because prisons are always full of programs that can accomodate every single prison in the United States and there have never been any abuse of power from the guards or anything relating to the prisons or anybody assaulting or raping. We just have tons of money to give them and nobody ever makes money in there at all. Imagine thinking the prison industrial complex is so perfect and that locking humans in spaces with drugs, rapes and abuse will somehow not negatively affect the people in there despite treating some like dogs.

@@solitarelee6200 I have been in HR for 15 years. These personal and unprofessional relationships between Prison employees and Inmates are major conflicts of interest and huge safety issues. In which the prison or jail could be held legally responsible and possibly sued if anything bad were to ever happen and it is found out they knew about and let it continue. You can't do this. And this woman was well aware that she couldn't do this. This particular policy was laid out for her plain, clear and on paper. A paper which she signed and dated, agreeing to abide by the policy when she first accepted the job offer...🤷🏾‍♀️

@@strawberry11233able it could be a legal thing. I don’t know that you can just give a baby to whomever. The foster system is crazy too. She probably would’ve had so many hoops to jump through and still might not have been approved strictly for her age or something dumb. Yet they allow horrible people to be foster parents who only do it for the income they get from the state. It’s really sad. Family court in every state needs a makeover. I personally have had experience with the family court system in two different states and both did not care at all about the wellbeing of the person they were supposed to be helping. One was my step child and the other was my grandmother. It’s an awful system. All they care about is money and that’s sad. Family court is the one area that should be just but it’s not.

I work with prisoners and the vast majority of women prisoners I’ve worked with (there are so few compared to men as only about 10% of incarcerated individuals are women); and of those women I’ve worked with, the majority are in for possession crimes and are struggling to stay clean. The mother is doing the best thing she can for her baby given her circumstances, especially considering the age and low income of Miss Bell who already sacrificed so much for the baby. The young mother was probably overwhelmed by all the publicity and probably got a lot of donations her way as well. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to stay clean under all that stress of being under a microscope and then having funds and freedom to use again. However, I don’t know her story and she could be a non-user for all we know. So whatever the case is for the mother, we should ALL just offer words of encouragement in hopes that her and her son can reunite and live a happy and healthy life together soon.

I love this story and if she was here right now I'd give her a big hug. What an angel! I have been a RN for 44 years and about 20 years ago I was working in the ICU at a community hospital. A man was brought in through the ER with a serious health crisis that made it hard for him to breathe. He was put on a ventilator and sent upstairs to the ICU. Family, friends, and his pastor all came to say their goodbyes because it was the patient's plan that in the morning he would have the doctors remove him from the ventilator and he would pass away quietly. Well, I was on the night shift and it was quiet in the ICU that night except for this patient. I allowed the friends, family, and pastor to form a night-long prayer circle around the patient's bed. i even joined the circle at times when I did not have other duties. The following morning the day nurse came in a bit early and saw I had allowed that prayer circle. She reported me to the manager of the ICU and I was written up for it. As it turned out, the patient for whom I had allowed the prayer circle did not die when removed from the ventilator the following morning. He recovered completely and went home!!!! I would do it again too, even if I got fired for doing it. Right is right, and sometimes you have to swim against the current and do the right thing, no matter the consequences. God Bless!

I get the conflict of interest but this woman is an Angel who was helping a woman who needed support. The world needs more people like this woman. We all need someone to help and support us in times of need. Especially when we have no one. :(

I, however, do *not* get the conflict of interests. How does her actions constitute a conflict of interests? The only way I can even think it could, is that it would set a precedent for correctional officers taking in the children of pregnant inmates. Is that what you meant?

What's the conflict? She can be placed in a different place if they don't want her to interact with that specific prisoner. Either way, I don't see the conflict. Her superior is pure evil. Inmates are being mistreated and people in power are facilitating it. If she was bringing in drugs she would get a promotion. God will reward and protect her. God's servants are evident by their works.

@@purplepheasant4776 Part of me thinks that she really needed to run this up her chain of command because if her superior was a sergeant then his/her lieutenant may have felt far differently, and that person’s captain would have had their opinion, and so on and so forth! The chain goes pretty high and is there to be utilized. Now, on the other side, if she could have retained her job, it sounds like it would have been an arduous place to work there after this. So, when dealing with immediate supervisors like this, there really is NO right answer! This is the type of thing that you could absolutely do the right thing, but you would have to really think about how exactly you will do it to make it most advantageous to carry out. Sadly, these things happen far too often, but it’s good to know and be reminded about the good people, because we all endure dealing with those we’d rather not have to deal with, but the good ones make it far more worth it! It would just be nice if the good ones could catch a break every once in a while!

May God bless you and your child. Just believe in his goodness and blessings will come unexpectedly in ways you never thought were possible. Don't be afraid to ask for help. You'll be amazed at the way people can point you in the right direction with guidance that you will know in your heart can only be coming from God working in his way not necessarily just your way. Just know in your heart, God has got you and yours. 🙏🏾

She has such a comforting way about her, like she was put on this earth to guide, nurture, and love. Sad to say that the babies first 2 months with her are probably going to be the most stable he’s going to have been, foster care is infamous for its flaws at this point. I’m just hoping and praying he’s one of the lucky ones to get a good family.

There is probably a rule on the books that prevents correctional officers from fraternizing with inmates. And for obvious reasons, it's a necessary rule. But yes, there should be instances when there are exceptions.

theres a line you cant cross as a C/O period ! thats what the prison counselor is for, to help make calls and get the beby placed somewhere until the mother is free, 2 months is not a long time. i worked at the women prison and I work at the mens prison now, I love talking to inmates and trying to help them but theres a line. This is how inmates manipulated officers & sometimes officers will bring in drugs, cell phone etc because inmates try and play on your emotions "if you let them" she could have referred the women to the prison counselor & left it alone .
